was cruising the net, and found this great site with realistic textures over 1000 free. www.animax.it just thought i'd pass this along! TMG

Really nice library. The interface is a little clunky, but the textures are pretty decent.

Ron, go around with your mouse and find the door... those are called hotspots in coding world...

Well, it's clear they're trying to avoid folks who mass-download and at the same time encourage the sale of the whole mass of things. There's definitely some nice stuff in there (there's some planking textures that are very crisp) and it's worth the effort, but they do need to clean the interface up a bit.

Eowyn ( ) posted Mon, 11 February 2002 at 2:29 PM

ronknights, no offence but do you ever have anything positive to say about sites? you didn't like ours because of frames and a flash intro, this one sucks cos it's got hotspots? look at what it's offering us...

Eowyn ( ) posted Mon, 11 February 2002 at 3:10 PM

Unfortunately, you've put all your treasures into a box that is much smaller than the average computer screen. That's not actually true. The site is designed so that even the people who use 800x600 resolution (and there a big bunch of them, believe me!) can view it properly. I am using 1280x1024 and I love the way the site is designed (maybe because I never surf with my browser window maximized) Johnnie is the one who designed the site, so I can't say which program he used. My guess would be Dreamweaver though, since it's the best webdesign software there is.

Swannie ( ) posted Mon, 11 February 2002 at 3:41 PM

Dreamweaver, Ron... and let's say the script is the secret of the designer.. although if you'd known your stuff you'd find out within 2 seconds what script I have used. Ron, really... I told you before in another thread, you really should start and study much more about designing websitesand the coding and guidelines behind it! If you'd known a little bit more you would find out that the site was designed for 800 x 600. Believe it or not, but that's still the most common resolution used. Now if I'd have made it for let's say, 1024 x 768, the 800 x 600 users wouldn't be able to view half the site without scrolling to the right and left. Again Ron, learn more about something before you say anything about somebody elses work. Even today we received a huge compliment from Daz3D about the site and they added our new banner to their site. Now if THOSE people would say it's not that good, I'd think twice. But after receiving (and having my experience with designing) many many compliments by big boys in web designing world.. well, that means something... We have an expression here saying: "You never get run over by a golden carriage.. it's usually the truck full of shit!"... Finest regards, Johnnie...

FWIW I didn't like the textures site that awful much. it opened too big for my desktop 1024X768, however, I just came from a peek at The Attic and I really love it! :) Johnnie, you did an awesome job with the frames and flash. (I normally don't like flash). I'm also not a fan of frames but this is well done and appealing to me also. I also like Dreamweaver a lot but have been using NetObjects MX of late. Congrats to both of you on the link from DAZ, too! :)

Swannie ( ) posted Mon, 11 February 2002 at 4:10 PM

That last line? scrolls up "Finest regards, Johnnie"??? Oh, I thought that was kinda nice of me??? :-) And no, no bad day at all, Ron. My day has been outstanding...you should see me on a bad day! I want to know, from what "people in the know" have you heard frames are bad or that they hate them? I tell you a little secret... most people hate frames because most of them can't work with it and make it work on every resolution. Now that's not to pat myself on the shoulder, but it's the plain truth! It's needs a hell of a lot more construction and seeing a site made with frames should bring some admiration from "people in the know". Really... that is plain BS. Flash isn't too populair either, but that's usually because people have slower connections. But mark my words, soon there will be nothing more THAN Flash or te likes-sites. It adjust to every resolution and everything can be manipulated other than the static normal HTML sites. There's already DHTML that is very similar on the screen as Flash. Dynamic sites is what that's called... I can take critizism very well.. if it comes from one that can take it aswell... winks at Ron Thanks, sweet Lisa... great to hear you like the site. Although it's in those bloody frames and has a Flash intro... evil grin Finest regards, Johnnie...

I can go through the door ok, but then when I click on a category, ............ nothing but a blank pic with the little colored square in the upper left corner.

Did my mouse die, or what?

Anybody else get this response?

Now ya got me curious.

You sometimes have to click it more than once. A scrolling menu will appear on the left. When you double-click the thumbnail, the larger version appears in the window at right.

Swannie ( ) posted Mon, 11 February 2002 at 4:51 PM

Geez Ron, I didn't realise you meant that sentence? grin But mean...? Do you feel attacked? I only said we have a saying like that here... nothing more!!! We also have cows in the fields here... Ron, please... in one particular thread you have been told off by someone and you didn't like it one bit and started to scream bloody murder. So, you can say everything to me and about me, but don't say I'm the one that can't take constructive criticism. And well, about the frames... it's OUR site and we decide who can link to what and who's not. Nothing is limited, everything can be seen inside the main frame. If a bigger picture is projected it's outside the frame. So I don't know where you got the idea from that some pictures are limited. If you read a book you don't have every page laid out in front of you on the ground, do you? Or do you have X-ray vision so you can read all the pages behind the one you're reading? I don't mind people telling me off about something that is really not working or looks like shit, but saying that people in the know hate frames and that's why it's not good is BS. The site works for all the common browsers and is viewable for every resolution. Plain and simple... We'll all wait till yours is done... evil grin Nah, I won't tease you with it... Regards, Johnnie...

Eowyn ( ) posted Mon, 11 February 2002 at 4:51 PM

shakes her head oh dear. The Attic has been tested with most browsers now and it works well in all of them. Sure, there are frames there but I think they're a very good solution considering the structure of the site. Sure, there is a Flash intro but if you don't like it - you can SKIP it. It's not that I can't take criticism but I just find it odd that it's always the same person who has the criticism. No, you don't need credentials to tell someone you don't like their site... but why not just say directly "I don't like it" instead of making it sound like the structure is bad and the layout sucks and that the site isn't technically good? Especially when, no offence, you're using a standard FP template on your own site? Johnnie designed the site on his own, the site works very well on different browsers and different resolutions. It doesn't have missing images or broken links (at least that I'm aware of) and it's well organized. The graphics are beautiful. In my books, it meets all the criteria of a nice site.

Lyrra ( ) posted Mon, 11 February 2002 at 4:52 PM

I don't like frames becuase I often have difficulty bookmarking the page I actually need to get too. I can understand a sitemanager wanting to herd viewers through the main part of the site, but I have a pokey dialup connection and really don't want to spend 10 minutes waiting for the big splash screen to load in, or having my system bomb when it can't find the latest nifty plugin I won't clog my system up with. The frames/no-frames argument is eternal. I treat it like the mac/PC debate and ignore it. It's a religous thing. Flash/noflash creeps under that too. My 2nd biggest complaint with sites is IE only sites. I don't like IE - and use it as little as possible. There are great sites I don't go to because they won't work with netscape. And you guys both need to take a deep breathe and chill out. This is not a design competition - and there is no one true way. Rejoice in difference. Okay? :) Lyrra

Swannie ( ) posted Mon, 11 February 2002 at 5:06 PM

Exactly my point, Lyrra. Am I complaining about non-framed sites? I made several of those too. I do not compare, I do not criticise other people's work in that way. A site is a site... and btw, you can bookmark ours normally, only you have to pass the frontpage... so? The intro can be skipped also, so there's no need for people with slower connections to complain either. Another thing is that you can't satisfy everyone and especially with scripts nowadays. But I used scripts that meet the standards of W3C and I can't help it if people don't update their browsers sometimes. Technology does go on. Our site is not IE only, it works on almost every other browser. Of course you can run into a failure, but at least report it to us or the webmaster of another site. But seriously, say all you want about the site, but it works! And that's something that we can be proud of, I think! :-) Chilled out, although I never got chilled in the first place, :-) Johnnie...

Crescent ( ) posted Mon, 11 February 2002 at 7:02 PM

Overall, I dislike frames, but The Attic is well-done. I also dislike Flash, but there's the skip intro button below, so I'm a happy camper. (I'm not on dial-up, I just tend to avoid Flash.) Frontpage = evil. Dreamweaver isn't exactly an angel, but I'll take it over FP any day. Now, what were we talking about? ;-)

corvette ( ) posted Mon, 11 February 2002 at 7:49 PM

Johnnie... Why so jumpy? too much coffee?

hauksdottir ( ) posted Mon, 11 February 2002 at 8:25 PM

I like frames. It helps with navigation. It helps keep things organized. My browser doesn't take up my whole screen... or my computer... unless it crashes. ;^) Until I make a website which is a long step BETTER than anything out here, I'm not going to pull down someone else's hard work... and even then I probably wouldn't be as small-minded as to criticize a choice of formats. Ron, if you can't appreciate sites which offer free stuff of high quality, even if it takes you a couple more clicks, why don't you simply stay out of them and not bother us with your laziness or your complaints? Unless you are a mindless moth, you are not compelled to go back to a site which makes you uncomfortable. Carolly

geep ( ) posted Mon, 11 February 2002 at 11:09 PM

I can't see any.
I'm startin' to get a complex here.
I might even be interested in buying some but if I can't see even one ...

I can go through the door ok, but then when I click on a category, ............ nothing but a blank pic with the little colored square in the upper left corner.

I've tried clicking on every category 2,3,4 and 5 or 6 times. I get a brief response but nothing on the screen changes. I am using Win98se and have IE6.

Does anyone else with IE6 have this problem?

Hate to be a pest, <---- but that's what I was originally trained for. ;=]

I'm using IE 6, and see the textures fine. Not sure what you are experiencing, geep. I did have some weird failings when trying to get a couple of the textures, but that was the worst of it. Perhaps restart your browser, or use netscape (if you have a copy installed). I find that various scripts work best in different browsers (I would hate to do web sites professionally...not enough uniformity in client software)

Lemurtek ( ) posted Tue, 12 February 2002 at 12:10 AM

I'm using IE6 with Win2k, and it works here. Apparently uses Java, so you have to have that enabled. Also, it takes a few minutes to load with no indication that it's doing anything. This is on 56K, so your infamous 300 baud modem might take quite awhile. Regards- Lemurtek

Greyskin ( ) posted Tue, 12 February 2002 at 7:27 AM

You guys still laugh at a 300 baud modem. I thought I was king when I had one. Of course that was 1978. I remember downloading observatory data from observatories in Canada. Took hours though.

TMGraphics ( ) posted Tue, 12 February 2002 at 7:53 AM

hehehe all this for sharing a free textures web site! :P

TMGraphics ( ) posted Tue, 12 February 2002 at 7:58 AM

Geep - I think you have to enable cookies (unfortunately) Worked for me after I did that. Also in between the thumbnails you cursor will change to a multi-directional icon, left-click and hold then move upward, this will scroll the screen up to reveal even more textures.
