Subject: ARGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

bloodsong ( ) posted Sun, 10 February 2002 at 11:53 AM · edited Wed, 13 November 2024 at 11:57 PM

vue 4.03 okay, i confess... my scene is rather huge. besides all the mountains and trees (which there aren't really a lot of) and bushes, i have 3 michael2's (without head morphs, thank goodness) with 3 mcfs's, one with a sweater and one with a cape, with wedge cut hair, sweep hair, and kozaburo's wonderful wave hair, and assorted props. and then an exp hawk with props (four imported pz3's). some special effects and a lightning bolt. no volumetrics or anything, though, just some glow. now i'm trying to add the rest of my props, about 7 files. i put them all in and saved, and vue screwt the save. i put them back in and... crashed. three times. so i put one in and saved. put another in and saved. put three more in and crashed. okay, so i loaded those three by themselves and saved as a vob and imported. finally got EVERYTHING into the file, everything in place, and everything SAVED. now i go to render. well, forget that. i try to render to disk. the pre-inserted file name is ff|tiff|tiff|tiff.tiff|tiff|tiff. no lie. i hit browse, i cannot browse. i delete the ff|tiff nonsense and hit browse, i cannot browse. okay, so i try to render to screen. at 1600x. well, smeggin norton pops up a blue screen and says i'm running low on system memory, and the norton auto protect might not work. like i care??? reboot. turn norton off. try again. same thing. what, i gotta render in safe mode, here?? i cant ditch this norton crap!! ARGH! so i figure i'll outflank norton, i set my screen size to 1600x1200 and render to screen. if vue doesn't try to access screen memory beyond the display, maybe i'll be okay. norton is not fooled. okay, so i'll try to batch render the blasted thing, in the background. i end EVERY smeggin task going on (okay, not systray), and i start up the batch thing. input my file, how big i want it, ultra mode, blah blah blah. what disk file i want it to (and it has to be bmp). i hit start. vue loads up (oh NO!) it loads the scene (i'm DOOMED), it starts to.... crash. reboot. load vue, hey, there's an abnormally terminated render here, you want it? no. load my scene. 'delete this scene outta this directory, its fubar.' whaddya mean it's fubar!?!?! that's the ONE where i had everything DONE and SAFELY SAVED!!!!! vue (#$&^($&^($*&ed it up!!!!!!!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH! ::sob sob sob:: mercury is stationary now. that's bad, right? my entire computer seems to be trying to fall apart :/

Oh ,my goodness, this is terrible. Last time I set Norton aside the whole system froze by a W 32 Badtram or something. but this sounds worse. Dunno what to say . In Dutch we say " mijn Deelneming" but I do not know how to say the same in English. But I feel verry Sorry for you. Good Luck (you 'll need it) Myske

Bloodsong, My only advise to you would be to get rid of Norton app... It's such a huge ressources eater... I had lots of trouble trying to render with more than 2 poser files in Vue, then got rid of Norton and everything was fine. Elaine

Varian ( ) posted Sun, 10 February 2002 at 1:24 PM

Isn't there a way to simply disable Norton without removing it entirely? If it was just turned off, I would think it wouldn't interfere then? If that's the problem. You didn't happen to save a BAK file with the VUE? :/

MikeJ ( ) posted Sun, 10 February 2002 at 2:05 PM

Yeah, as they said. I have Norton Utilities, and it plays hell with Vue. I went into Start>Run>msconfig> Startup TAB, and made it a point that NOTHING Norton would load on reboot, and alot of things started going smoother. Especially Crash Guard (which Lynne Fredricks likes to call "Crash Hard"). Norton just doesn't play well with graphics apps, but most notably, Vue. You can always manually load all the Norton junk as you need it.

What you need is a cold cloth on the brow and a beer. Then lie down till the feeling goes away. Lol. Poor you.

MightyPete ( ) posted Sun, 10 February 2002 at 5:30 PM

I'll tell you guys something. If you want to render big files properly you need a memory manager. I use MemTurbo. I turn off everything except that. Everything. Unplug the net and turn off your firewall too. Have lots of memory I have 512 meg have a big swap file set up I have mine set to 1 gig min and now have 8 gigs free on c drive. Load vue and render. It works.....

Lynn ( ) posted Sun, 10 February 2002 at 6:24 PM

Mike's got it right! I think you know that any app that renders (digital video, 3D, etc) wants as much of your machine as it can get. There is a huge class of products out there, utilities of all sorts, that perform periodic functions -- either scheduled or whenever very little or no activity is taking place (your screensaver is like this). Rendering apps are in a perpetual "don't bother me man, I'm rendering..." way of working, which is very contrary to apps that love to sit in your system tray and "optimize" your system. Norton works this way by its very nature of being a utility. Norton also has a, um, track record of stomping about where it isnt wanted. You may not be having problems with draft grade renderings. But those really long, high resolution ones are probably choking. Do some research into Norton to see if you can deactivate it completely when you are ready for a long render. Also, check out Task Manager to see if there are any other sneaky applets doing their thing. You might be surprised. A lot of printer installers install applets that ding your system now and then to remind it that there is a printer attached. We have an HP OfficeJet on the wireless portion of our network we had to unplug for this very reason. Best regards, Lynn Fredricks e-on sofware US Business Unit

Myske, you know that "W32Badtrans" is a virus, do you? I hope your anti-virus has killed it. Guitta

Hi all. The same thing happened to me when I worked on really big scene. (about 8 mil. polygons) Same problems with render. No screen render, no disk render etc. Then I deleted this crazy extension (tifftifftiff or so :) ) and left only filename without extension. And then everything worked fine. Vue 4.03 on Duron 900 and 256 MB DDR RAM (Win XP PRO) (btw. Norton utilities works fine) I don't know bloodsong if this help you, however, you are not alone with this problem. P.S: Sorry for my poor English. ;-)

bloodsong ( ) posted Mon, 11 February 2002 at 2:02 PM

heyas; thanks, guys. no luck working with it today, either. i think vue decided it hates me, now. i went to the one-before-the-messed-up-one scene... fixed two things, tried to render an area to check them.... and it rendered hella sloooooow, all grinding my hard disk. it never used to do that. not even when i was working on this scene before. :/ i did ctrl-alt-del the nav32 thingy, but apparently there are other hidden norton things going on. i'll see about taking those out, too.

MikeJ ( ) posted Mon, 11 February 2002 at 3:20 PM

yeah, blodsong, you can always consult Task Manager, but it seems that things show running under it aren't always shown. The best way is, as I said abobe, Start>Run>msconfig>Startup, and then remove all things Norton. If that's not it, then I wouldn't know what else to say. :(

damn, my typing sux!

Varian ( ) posted Mon, 11 February 2002 at 10:18 PM

Mike, just look at it in an austonamtically fashion - we can read it, therefore it's not so bad! :D

bloodsong ( ) posted Tue, 12 February 2002 at 6:43 PM

actually... for a second, i thought he meant adobe put out a task manager for windows.... ;)

wibbleman ( ) posted Thu, 14 February 2002 at 11:31 AM

Sorry caught up with this thread a bit late. I hate it when the technology gets in the way of the creativity.

I work in IT and have just finished re-configuring my home network and that of a client's. Neither contains any Norton products at all. After testing and using all versions of Norton AntiVirus, Firewall and Utilities released over the last year, I have ditched the lot. The hassle involved with Norton apps far outweighs any benefits.

Bad news: none of the Norton products uninstall cleanly under 98, 98SE or 2000. Believe me I have been through the pain barrier with uninstalling Norton stuff. It sucks, big time. It also runs processes as services so that they are not always visible in Task Manager. Same goes for McAfee's stuff too.

My advice is to 1. back up everything important, 2. reinstall the OS and all your apps., 3. reinstall your data, 4. use ZoneAlarm firewall (www.zonelabs.com) and AVG AntiVirus (www.grisoft.com). Both free, both very effective, both shut down cleanly for rendering. :-))

For good measure go to www.bysoft.com and download their excellent RAM cleaner program, "FreeRAM". It's free!

For the record I do not work for nor am I affiliated with any of these companies. Recent experience has taught me that this stuff works.

Mark

Same ( Norton is getting just as bad as all the rest) but you don't have to go threw all that bother to turn off Norton. Here I'll upload the program that I use to turn off those pesky programs. It's called Startup.exe and will show everything that starts up when you start your computer. You can turn things off and back on later if you want. I always include it on evey computer I build in the root dir of c drive so you can get to it even in dos if you have to to turn things off if your having trouble starting a computer up. It's handy and of course free. It's small so get it now.... 38 kb... Works on Windows 98 / ME, not sure of others...

wibbleman ( ) posted Thu, 14 February 2002 at 5:25 PM

I'd forgotten about Mike Lin's Startup utility and it is very good. It works fine on Windows NT and 2000 too. Unfortunately it will not unscramble a registry once Norton has been uninstalled or, worse, hung during a live update. Not even regedit would save one of my boxes. A plague on the house of Symantec, I say, a plague! BTW liked the Yukon pictures.

bloodsong ( ) posted Thu, 14 February 2002 at 5:35 PM

BWAAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAA!!!!! reinstall my os.... and all my applications.... !??! like i have a few years to spend building the blasted things up again. :/ thanks for the tips, though.

MightyPete ( ) posted Thu, 14 February 2002 at 5:37 PM

Thanks. Oh I do the save the reg when it's intact then cut and paste the parts in with file compare and a program called edit pad which the want cash for now but I still have the free version. I know what you mean about Symantic though it's getting worse by the day. Oh don't try this, delete any program called setup.exe into the Norton protected garbage can and you can petty much kiss your computer goodby unless you remember you got stuff there and delete it also. I found that one the hard way. Nothing worse than anivirus programs acting virus like. I'll take my chances with the virus instead thank you very much.

bloodsong ( ) posted Wed, 20 February 2002 at 4:09 PM

okay, FINE! i neutered norton, i went to render my image. i was going to make a print-sized render to disk, but that ain't flying. SO i said, fine, i'll just render to screen as large as i can. only took an hour and a half. and it's all rendered, and anti-aliased, and the glow is rendered and anti-aliased and everything is fine. so i press the button to save the image. poof, it vanishes. so i go to the menu and do export image: colour picture, and poof, my vue viewports vanish. after that, everything is GONE, no picture, no scene, no saving options... just POOF. ::SIGH::

MightyPete ( ) posted Wed, 20 February 2002 at 4:38 PM

I feel your pain but it sounds like there is something wrong with your computer and not Vue. Sounds like there is something wrong with how the graphic card is working. Things vanishing on the screen is a graphics card / Windoz problem.

Bloodsong, you have my sympathy. If you have a GeForce card use the raw drivers form nVidia's site and *not* the drivers supplied by the card manuacturer. If anyone's looking for a virus product that acts nicely and intalls / uninstalls / shuts down cleanly for rendering, try AVG (URL above). AVG is slower than Norton's but, according to UK mag PCPlus (and my experience), is equally as effective at stopping viruses. It's free to home users too. Go get it!
