You should set it to render in "separate process", if you haven't already. That will force poor little archaic 32 bit Poser 8 to create a Firefly render process independent of the Poser.exe process, and free up some system RAM for it to use. Or so goes the theory. Even so, a scene that large would be a problem for any 32 bit app, and if you already have separate process ticked off, no idea what else it could be.

Perhaps if there were a little more civility all around, Rendo would be an easier place to participate in.
Well really, what do you expect? Have you spent much time reading non-Poser forums? Lack of civility is more often than not the general rule on internet forums, particularly where a product is the topic. As I'm sure you're well aware, you can't please everyone.
But it is by far not just Poser that has this situation. There are probably far more unhappy Max, Maya and other high end 3D users out there and you can find the same "uncivil" behavior on may forums devoted to those and other products.
But you also have to consider you haven't exactly gone out of your way to endear yourself or your products to the community. The Poser 5 fiasco is one example, and while maybe not quite as bad, now Poser 8, too. All the other versions seemed more or less fine, but those are two striking examples of why there might be a good deal of animosity towards the ever- traveling band of Poser developers.
Poser 5 was rush released when you guys were all but broke and out of business. You foisted an unfinished and probably rather untested version upon this community you love so much, with much ado and fanfare, just to get some cash flow.
And Poser 8 - released just on time, immediately after the presentation at SIGGRAPH, bugs and all. Bugs that you knew were there, as you were already working on a SR1 and already had a hotfix even as the raw version was going out the door. But I imagine it would have been kind of late (and expensive) by that point to have all those DVDs replaced...
And while there were a whole lot of people jumping up and down for joy over it, there were also quite a few people for whom it wouldn't work, and even now still won't. Sure, you have the refund deal, but that's not really a solution. People wanted to buy it and use it, not have a refund.
And then there's the matter of all the IDL hoopla. Says on your site "photorealism". Uh-huh. But everybody who tried it couldn't get jack out of it at first, because you neglected to mention that half the settings were hidden away in an undocumented script. Not to mention that the hotfix was supposed to be included in the download, but wasn't.
And that poll, asking people how much money they make, for one, not including a suggestions field for another. (You could at least have made a token gesture and just ignored the hundreds of suggestions you would have received, you know.)
But instead you came jollypopping along like your poll was the best thing since sliced bread and then seemed surprised when it wasn't as well-received as you'd have liked.
But to recap:
Poser 5 : Tragic release just to bring in some cash, figuring the community loved you so much they would understand.
Poser 8: Wasn't even ready for release, but I imagine you were pressed to make that deadline for right after the SIGGRAPH presentation.
I could go on and on about Poser's problems, but I'm trying to stay civil here and see no real point in it anyway as that's not the subject here, but I will at least mention there are still many long time bugs and issues that haven't even been touched. Things like that also make customers unhappy.
But to go back to your statement, i.e., "Perhaps if there were a little more civility all around, Rendo would be an easier place to participate in."
That does sound whiney. I mean seriously, as "the face of Poser", do you really expect to be greeted everywhere you go like some kind of well-loved king or something, considering your history?
Or are you saying you choose not to participate as much as you'd like because there isn't enough back-patting and fawning as you'd like and too much meanness and animosity for you to be able to function?
The days of Poser as a cult app and you as its Reverend Jim Jones are long over. A decade ago when this place was Poserforum.com and you were being worshiped as the can-do-no-wrong Poser God by the likes of Willow and Grey are over, never to be seen again. Poser got kind of big somewhere along the way, and in spite of all your inadvertent attempts to ruin it, has prevailed, but only because there was always someone else willing to bail you out and fix it up good enough for another version.
I'm sure you're a great guy, and sincere about your love for Poser. I have little doubt about that. But if you're surprised why Poser and yourself are greeted with so much recurring animosity, maybe you are just a little too detached from your user base. And if that's the case, maybe you ought to hang out only in places where you are not questioned or challenged.
For the record, I think you guys are on the right track for Poser's development, and I think Pro and 8 both have some really great qualities. I hope to see you guys eventually bring it up to its full potential. There is no other app that comes close to Poser for what it does, and it would be great to see you guys stop dicking around with it and just do it up right, and for once have a major release that doesn't work for only half the people and needs 6 months and 5 patches to live up to its hype.

BlueEcho, I don't think they meant literally shiny, as in too much speularity.
"Ooh shiny" is a colloquialism meaning something like "cool", and I think it's a vague reference to the way some people and animals are attracted to shiny things. ;-)

wow that's pretty heavily into conspirast theory .you think there's losers that really do that???
why ????
who cares if you top the coments hits chart?
is that going to get you a job or something?
wow if thats true, Sivana, that's cra- zee.
Actually, it is true. There have been many cases of that sort of thing happening here in the past. I don't know if they watch IP addresses here and ban clones, but I doubt it.
So I can't point my finger at any one example and say, yeah, that's a clone worshiping himself, but people being what people are, you can count on it being fact that it happens here and happens a lot.
I believe that most (if not all) of the contests are now judged by moderators and coordinators. I'm not sure since I rarely look at any of them but it seems to me the last one or two I checked out weren't open to public voting. They used to be though, before countless allegations of cheating.
Is that going to give you a job or something, you ask?
Well, maybe, maybe not. They do have categories for Most Viewed, Most Commented, and Best Rated, and if I were looking here to find someone with a style I needed in order to commission someone, I would probably look at those categories first.
It's not really conspiracy theory to expect people to lie and cheat and misrepresent, especially when it's a matter of popularity and potentially money.
Look at some of the examples of blatant theft of copyrighted meshes and whatever else by merchants who have attempted to pass other's work off as their own. There have been many examples of that here over the years,. While that's an extreme example of desperation, the fact that it has happened (and will continue to happen) suggests the probability that many many more minor offenses occur unnoticed, such as people using clone accounts to boost their stats.
I wouldn't say everybody does it, or even a majority. I'm sure those who blatantly lie and try to cheat the system are well in the minority, but it would be a very safe bet to make that it does happen and happens frequently.

Quote - MikeJ I didn't have in mind offending your work, which I find very precise and was made very careful, that is a fact! I just wanted to express my opinion, Having work with many different models I have my options on what I like on a texture tamplate and what I don't. As I said in an older post the perfect mapping for me would be in the middle of the two existing.
So it is just a personal opinion
Oh I wasn't offended at all. I may explain why I do something but I don't have any problem with taking criticism. Actually, it's the opposite for me - I want to know everything that's wrong with something and why someone might perceive it as such, which is why I asked what it is you meant by "Poser friendly".
I was taking classes for Maya, specifically for game design. Between that and the people I met through it and now work with on various projects, there is no amount of criticism I've heard that can bother me anymore. I've had so much this past year I've become immune to it. ;-)
Oh but I agree about the mapping idea. One thing I've learned about that is there is really no "right" way that will work for everybody in all situations. Generally, you want do it to suit your specific needs at the time, for a particular model.

Following the pissing in a violin analogy to its logical conclusion, should I assume that pissing in a cello would be a considerably worse waste of time? Or would you go in the other direction, such as pissing in a kazoo?
How about, say, urinating in an acoustic guitar? Does that lose its punch?

Might be a Firefox thing or an older QT version used there, but I have the latest FF and the most recent QT plugin and no player shows up. The only way I could make it play was by double clicking on it.

I have huge speakers here and when she talked it about blew my head off.

Looks great BlueEcho - I like that "regular girl" look you got there with your textures.
I'd say girl next door, but that might be a copyright infringement around here. ;-)

I am wondering something...
Although I'm sure MikeJ has done a fantastic job with the new mapping I thought this was made for using Antonia with other applications and that the original mapping would be for the Poser version (as it looks more poser friendly to me)
For us that would like to make textures for the original version only, is there a code name we should use so as not to confuse people?
I think he did a pretty good job with the UVs although I wouldn't say fantastic. I do know he's glad that the BB eyes will be the official ones, because he's not happy with the mapping he did for the original eyes. ;-)
It wasn't made specifically for use in other applications. That's how it started, because I wanted something else, but UVs are UVs and all programs will use them the same way when it comes to pinning image maps down on a set of coordinates. While there are advantages for other programs in the new mapping, the converse isn't true - there aren't any disadvantages with them for use in Poser. So it's perfectly "Poser-friendly" but more importantly, it's also more Photoshop friendly when it comes to lining up textures against seams.
Although the whole concept of explicit UV mapping for image textures on models in general is flawed and limited, but that's a whole 'nother subject not worth considering until programs have better procedural materials and faster real time previews...
But to answer the question, Les' geometry switching could be used for that, as long as Antonia's base geometry doesn't change. You could take the newer Antonia with the better joints and eyes and morphs and plug the old geometry into her, and have the original UV mapping.
As for what designation that would have, currently Antonia 118 is the latest version to use the original mapping and textures. I would imagine that the next version will be 119 in keeping with the way he's been naming the incremental versions, but I would guess 118 will remain the last version of the original.
But unless the Photoshop-using texture people I know have been lying to me, the newer mapping makes for easier texturing and less distortion, so you'll probably see more support for new textures with the new mapping.
Just out of curiosity, why do you say the original looks more Poser friendly? As long as the general rules of UV mapping are followed, as far as I know Poser has no special requirements or anything that make one method better or more "friendly" to it than another.

Hey... I'm hijacking my own thread! What can be done about the sycophants, eh? We need some direct action!
Figured I'd get my comment in before this thread gets locked for "not being productive", or "before it gets worse"...
I just deleted several long paragraphs that I had written, but after I read it back I realized I had already written the same things many times over the years, and so have a lot of others. Horse beating and all that.
But...
They have a limit for how many images people can upload per day, and I think they also ought to have a limit for how many gallery comments a person may make per day. That could cut back on the vacuous blathering and sycophantic fawning considerably.
Some might say, that that would also cut back on the "helpful" comments, but I don't think most people who post in the Poser gallery really want that. They can get better and more honest feedback in a forum thread.
Oops, there I go, reaching for the horse-beating stick, like some kind of reflex action. Better end this now. ;-)

I was wondering why it had Assassin's Creed for a tag, actually. I didn't even really read through everything there, just watched the video.
Assassin's Creed was and still is one of my favorite games I've ever bought, by the way. Beautiful graphics, great gameplay. My only complaint was not enough variety in the side missions, but that's not the subject here.
If you're looking for a career doing cut scenes and even just regular animation for games I'd say you're well on your way. :-)

That's IFC's page, I was actually saying the original video had a lot less compression but eh that's cool too - not here to explain myself, just share some stuff. If you likes cool, if not, that's cool too. I'm still gonna keep making my stuff and putting it out there and I hope the rest of you will continue to do the same. ;-)As for the filmmaking tips, create a thread - I'm always willing to learn via example. I wouldn't mind seeing some of your Poser animations where those lighting techniques are utilized and a little explanation of how they're done. Hell that's how I learned to use Poser in the first place, from the more seasoned folks out there... and hit me up with a PM when those threads are up.
No offense, but you sound kind of defensive there. I didn't say I didn't like it - actually I said the opposite.
And you did, after all, say "then comment comment comment..." On that site, but I didn't want to leave anything negative or critical there. And I'm not really much of a "Wow, totally awesome and kewl dude!" type of guy. ;-)
At any rate, as they say, "I may not know about art, but I know what I like". I'm not a lighting guru or much of a CA animator, but it doesn't mean I (or others) don't have an opinion on what just looks good.
And as I've said, that's about the best animation I've ever seen out of Poser, if not the best. Clearly you have the skills for animation and I'd love to see where you take it.

Quote - MikeJ, thank you for the reply.
But I think I am confused on which Antonia we are using now, 116 or 118.
AP118 takes odf's mapping not yours unless I missed a posting on a new AP118.
My brain is mush...sigh.
You're welcome.
And no, it's not just you - I'm pretty well confused at this point too. You have to really stay on top of this stuff or it gets overwhelming pretty quickly. ;-)
But Les just explained all that. I think Antonia should have a daily blog somewhere, where all the current and pertinent information is available in one location.
EDIT:
Hey you know, a Facebook page is what she needs.
Thread: Antonia - Opinions? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Well since odf's not around, I'll answer that. He said in his "executive decisions" post (several pages back and a week ago ) that the new mapping will be the official mapping. He was just waiting to have some completed texture sets to go with it before doing so.
