I wonder when developers are going to realize that their protection schemes are nothing but trouble to the honest consumer. Securom sucks, SafeDisc REALLY sucks, and well, looks like this one does too. Big shock. Get rid of them already and stop screwing the honest user over. It's not like it's hard to get around them anyway, sheesh. I can name game after game where the protection was either removed by the developer BECAUSE it causes problems or the honest consumer was forced to find "alternatives" because of the damn protection screwing things up. I know, it's a fruitless battle. /me wanders off to read more threads.

Questor: thanks for saying what I was thinking. I'm a computer geek before I am a 3d artist, so I understand the futility of software security quite well.

"Speculation is the CL team is attempting to defeat recent 'cracks' made available on the internet." Like it'll do any good. But, I suppose they have to try. Wish them luck but think they'd be better off fixing bugs. While I've read the list of fixes and enhancements, it is a bit surprising to see so many things listed so quickly. Yes, they should have waited, but it doesn't seem like the program is broken for everyone, so I'm willing to believe they did the best they could within the time they were given (there are always reasons programs ship when they do and it doesn't always have to do with the developer wanting to). I'm waiting to hear what people think, and based on how many major problems remain, this'll affect how soon I get Poser 5. For now, I'm still waiting, but I'm glad to see CL is devoted to fixing things, even if there's a lot to fix.

As a final chime-in on this, I'm running a Radeon 8500 under Windows 2000 pro and experience zero problems, nor have I heard of driver issues with 2k. My 7500 also ran perfectly until I replaced it with an 8500 for more performance. Granted there's a near infinite amount of hardware and software configurations, I have zero complaints about my card. ATi's drivers aren't as good as nVidia's yet, but they're getting close, much better than they used to be, and I've never had the problems other people have, perhaps because I am anal about what is installed on my system and that I tweak little things and remove useless garbage. I've always thought that ATi has better image quality over anything nVidia has ever done, with Matrox being up there at the top for picture quality. You'll see that most reviews agree with that as well. And, if you need DVI, every ATi card has it now (anything recent, that is). If I were going to get a GeForce 4, I wouldn't spend my money on a 4600. I'd rather spend $100 more dollars on a Radeon 9700 that destroys it, or spend $100 less on a GeForce 4 4200 that's almost as good as a 4600. Really comes down to what you want to do with it. You may find you're better off with a "professional" card of some sort or even an older Matrox or ATi card that has excellent picture/video quality. Take a look around. And don't forget to check prices at pricewatch (link attached).Thread: Poser 5 Render | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
mystic...basically setting the page file to a single size keeps all of it together in one spot on the disk. If you have the time, it may be worth it to disable the page file completely, reboot, defrag, set the file to whatever size you want, and reboot again. This'll more or less guarantee that the space set aside for the page file is contiguous, which'll mean less clunking around as the disk tries to find/swap the data. Putting it on another drive (i.e. on your non-os drive) reduces the work load for that drive. If you can put it on another IDE chain that's even better (i.e. primary and secondary), but we're really getting into nit-picky things about maximum performance, which with the latest hardware that's available, is pretty much negligible. lostcar: did that help at all?

Oops, should have mentioned that's how you do it in 2k, but it's probably reasonably close to how you do it in XP. Sorry.

Right-click My Computer, select Properties, click the Advanced tab, click Performance Options, and then look for Virtual Memory and hit the Change button. That's it right there. I'd suggest making the page file one size (1156-1156 for example instead of 512-1156 or whatever it set it to when you installed), but whatever you choose, a set size is better. Also, if you have multiple hard drives, putting the page file on a drive that the OS isn't installed to can speed things up a tad. As is, that should be large enough, but I don't have P5 yet and don't know how big of a memory hog it is. Good luck. :) Nice render, by the way.

Well, there's video cards for gaming and video cards for graphics. Which are you looking for? A cheap card for graphics would be some sort of GeForce 2 (good OpenGL support usually). Otherwise, I'd be dropping $350 (that's US dollars) for a Radeon 9700. They're the hottest thing out (right now) for gaming and such. And seeing as how I'm a gamer a hobby artist, that's what I'd get. Read some reviews and ask around. Some sites to check: www.sharkyextreme.com www.hardocp.com www.anandtech.com There's zillions others, but that's a start.
Thread: I want "arthur" (server) BACK! | Forum: Community Center
I know it takes time getting all of this set up properly, but it might help cut down on simultaneous sessions if the redirect problem is fixed. You can't go directly to arthur since it bounces you to the "main" server and then you have to go to arthur again. I'm guessing this leaves a second connection, since you went to the main site as well. If not, well, it's still annoying. Not a huge thing, but something worth noting. In the meanwhile, I'll be patient and try to visit during non-peak hours (are there any?). :)

In the picture from IE, there's a / before the last > in it that could be wrong (since it's not within the quotes), but I'm no XML expert. On a side note, that file isn't going to show in IE, unless there's a plugin from Adobe that does it. PSDs are Photoshop files and only open in those sorts of programs. Or should. And if that doesn't help, ignore me. I don't even have P5 yet. :P
Thread: shaved pubic hair prejudice? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
One more reason: Hair on the map, going directly onto the model, doesn't look very good. You have to use a prop for it as Cage suggested for it to not look flat and just plain weird. A "shaved" texture allows for more flexbility, but I agree that offering both would be ideal.

"I have an Athlon XP (1700+) with 512 MG memory. Plenty of hard drive space. Running Win 98A. I have been plagued with crashes, error messages, slow downs, etc. I reinstalled Poser 5 and am still have trouble. Sharon" Get rid of 98 as soon as you can and put on 2000 (or, if you prefer for some strange reason, XP, but 2000 has fewer problems). 98 is a pile and that is likely the source of your problems. Besides, it can't even use all of that ram. It uses roughly 192 megs and no more. And 98a (pre-98SE) is particularly full of really ugly bugs. I'd wager Poser isn't the only thing crashing on your system.
Thread: Does anyone know who made this? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
It might be Fisheid, but I'm not positive. I just remember getting a lot of tats from him (her?) in the past. Can anyone confirm that?
Thread: Some Poser 5 render stats - warning, lots of pictures ahead. | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Wow, I must say I'm disappointed. I've been looking at preview renders and the sort since they've shown up, and while initially I thought it was neat, I think i'm just underwhelmed by the new renderer after seeing these comparisons. I, as a regular person in this as a hobby, don't see much difference in the renders. Sure, a little bit of light or shadow here, and maybe the dynamic hair (which I find to be unattractive and unnatural looking) a little fuller, but I don't think it's worth all of the extra time. If there was a large, visible difference in quality (aside from the apparent render bugs), I may think a little differently, but I'm just thinking that maybe it's not such a bad thing that I don't have the money for it now anyway. I'll keep lurking in the shadows, but with the other bugs and the mediocre new render engine, I think I'll be waiting longer than I intended now.
Thread: Can't go directly to Arthur? | Forum: Community Center
Yeah, that's basically what it does. If I use my bookmark, I have to use it again or click the link on rosity's front page to get onto arthur. I somehow doubt that was intended and I hope someone looks at it.
