i definitely have to hand it to Art, this exercise has caused me to take a step back and look for different ways of working a scene. to be honest when i posted the original i was a tad disappointed with how the tower looked, it really lacked detail. don't get me wrong, i liked the shot from the start but when i posted i really didn't think there was anything i could do to improve it. i figured garbage in, garbage out. now i see what's possible and i'll not be underestimating photoshop again!! i've gone back over 4 dvd's worth of picture seeing if i had any others with the same sort of problems, the subject looking too over exposed or lacking detail. again photos that i liked but for the reasons above didn't turn out worthy. i did manage to find a couple which will be posted over the next few nights. while they're not by any means perfect they are however improved to the point where i'm happy how they turned out! i posted Art's version because he's the one that inspired the change and if not for the valuable input i'd still be putting minimal time and effort into making enhancements...not being lazy minimal but unaware minimal...know what i mean? HAIL ART...heh heh...sorry boss, couldn't resist!!! thank you all for you kind words, suggestions, tips, advice and opinions! as Pascale said, if not for those things i'd not improve!!! i appreciate it all!!! eb

it was taken in Philadelpha PA, Pennypack Circle. yes i do like high contrast but in this case i like the second one also, the tower just looks nicer and evenly shaded. i did the best i could do to try and get that look but after many failed attempts i compomised and went with the high contrast...

i know the tower wasn't straight. i leveled the camera with the sidewalk i was sitting on not the tower. i left it that way on purpose to keep the street more evenly balanced.

Thread: torn between colour and toning... | Forum: Photography
imho db, i like the sepia tone! you captured the color very well and they're very crisp and clear but for my money b/w or sepia is the way to go as i think it offers more of a classic days of old feel to it!!! aside from the nostalgic point of view, toned images show off more deail between light and shadow...but again that's just my humble opinion!!! eb

excellent night shots!!! i think you've been pulling my leg and knew how to shoot these all along..heh heh!!! all my night shots get that orange cast as well but i prefer b/w so i never bothered to try and fix them. i'll have to hit DB up for some knowledge...lol!!! love the pic with the trails in it but also the last image, love the purpleish tone to it, really conveys the cold!!! oh and can't forget the pic with the star like light, that's very cool!!! nicely done on all accounts! great things to come for sure!!! eb

Thread: skylight filter | Forum: Photography
thank you both for the useful info!!! that just sucks, i'm using a wideangle zoom lens...it figures!!! so in my case it makes little difference weather i use one or not... though i'll admit i was wrong, i got more flare with the filter on then i did without. matter of fact i have two shots (mounted on a tripod) exactly the same, the one with the filter has a major flare in it where as the one without the filter had none at all!!!
thanks again!!!

Thread: skylight filter | Forum: Photography
hello all, sorry to cause a debate, was just trying to be helpful is all, but then i'm no one to be helping anyone as i'm cluless! so i'll be keeping my mouth shut from now on that's for sure!!! the reason i got the filter was to protect my lens, also to see if it would improve the quality of my day shots. i go into the woods alot and get myself into very odd and unstable postitions and being broke it's cheaper to buy a filter then to buy a lens. as for the flaring, well i can't say one way or the other if it's due to the filter or not as i've had flares happen without it and i always use the hood so again i can't say if that helps or not. ghosting..what's that(see what i mean)??? being lazy i did screw on an orange filter right on top of the skylight and i did get a lot of flare but with either one or the other not both, i don't get much flare if at all! i'll try shooting without it and see what happens! another artist here suggested that the flaring is due to stopping down..now that i'd agree with as lately i've been playing with the aperture in an attempt to learn how to better use my camera but then i don't know any better one way or the other to say for sure. i'm not a professional nor do i claim to be, i just go out and do my thing, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. everything i've done so far is the result of trial and error. don't listen to me whatever i say more then likely it'll be wrong!!! my apologies Sheila!!! regards, Eric
Thread: Image corruption (Main post).... | Forum: Community Center
not sure if this willh help at all but i had this problem before where my images where gettig very pixelated. the thing i did to solve it was to upload the main image and thumb seperately by editing the post. it solved the pixelation problem. i did have an image that recently got distorted, half of the image shifted over and didn't line up with the other half but when i checked it some time later it was fine. on a couple images that i've seen with this problem after waiting a while and checking later i noticed that it was corrected! sorry if this is irrelevant to the topic but i figured it couldn't hurt to mention it!!! eb
