Subject: credit card comprimise issues

poisinivy ( ) posted Thu, 05 March 2015 at 2:13 PM · edited Fri, 09 August 2024 at 1:07 PM

I am very sad. kitty today. so I want to ask you what you would do?
here my complaint. Its a BIG one
I had received a new credit card on January 25th 2015 because my old one expired on Fed 2 and since it was a new credit account. I was saving it for all the March madness sales here at daz and at renderosity. I was very excited to say the least.

Anyway, to make a long story short. I used my new credit card 5 times . twice at Daz on Feb 25th totally $23 in purchases and 3 times at renderosity on feb27. giving me a total of $66 in charges on this fresh brand new credit card.. I had never used it anywhere else. EVER! . On Monday morning I got a phone call from Mastercard telling me that they had put a freeze on my card. they said It appears someone “Hacked” either daz or renderosity credit card servers and attained my credit card information and tried to rack up $8000 in charges on it in the UK. .they tested it twice first then went crazy. I had a $10,000 limit on the card.. Luckily i had fraud protection & alert on my service and caught it before the charges went through.

Anyway now I am very sad. because I have no new credit card, it will be 30 days before they will issue me the new one. I have other credit cards I can use. But not knowing where the hack came from. I do not dare to buy anything in fear of being hacked again. I never use my debit card for online shopping.
So anyway I called on the phone and reported this hack to both daz and renderosity and both sites told me later in a e-mail they checked their systems and found no issues.
So now here is my complaint.. how can I trust shopping at these 2 sites when one of them compromised my credit cards. . I can say this because . Daz and renderosity are then only 2 sites I used this brand spanking new credit card on. so something happen on one of these site in order for this hacker to get my credit card information. but both sites say there is no issues with their systems. So now what am I suppose to think? i didn;t not use that card anywhere else.

I have a ton of stuff i have wish listed on both sites waiting for these march madness sales . But now it looks like the hackers wins. and I am going to loose out on these sales. because until i find out how my card got compromised I am very leery of doing any more shopping at 2 of my favorite 3d sites.

What would you do if it was you?

I'm very sorry you had this happen - just dealt with the same thing - but no, you can NOT assume that your card was compromised at one of those sites. The card I just had to have replaced because of someone trying to use it was one I haven't used for many months. There are many ways these scumbags get credit card numbers, including (as I was told this when another one of my cards was compromised a year or so ago) using computers to generate numbers..so yours might just have "happened" to be a number they came up with. Not sure how the credit card company would know that this person hacked any particular servers - all they know is the card was used.

While stores do the best they can to prevent these issues, it's not fair, in my opinion, to blame THEM for what thieves do (I know you're not trying to blame them but I've seen people blast stores and say they'll never buy from such and such because their credit card was compromised). And while we all pay in the end with higher interest rates and fees, keep in mind that even if those charges had gone through, credit card companies do not make you pay for fraudulent charges.

All you can do is keep an eye on the charges on your card - check online and check your statements.

Cheers,
Alisa

Hello,

We have asked our staff to check and we do not see any type of breach in
our security or servers.

We do not store credit card information in our system and all information
entered into our system is heavily encrypted.

Everything has been checked by our IT and Programming department 3 times
within the last 10 days or so to be certain everything on our end is
secure.

You can also order and choose to select to pay by check or money order and send it to the office. I know this does not make up for someone getting a hold of your credit card so please do not take it that way. I was trying to offer a solution for you for the time being so you did not miss out on any of the deals/sales.

I also want to let you know that there are a lot of other ways someone can get a hold of your credit card information such as a program or software on your computer. Also, people think that it is the most recent sites/purchases you made but this is actually not the case most of the time.

We are very sorry you are going through this as we all know how frustrating it can be.
Warmest Regards,

I did not blame any web site or Renderosity I only stated the facts. The fact is this was a brand new credit card only used in 2 web sites 5 times I had a total of & 65 dollars spent on it and I only used it in a 5 day period. I received this card just a couple of weeks ago and never used it's been sitting on my desk waiting for March Madness sales to begin.

Anyway what Mastercard told me, is it could have been site compromise and to notify the site owners which I have The Credit card company also told me to check my PC for maleware and virus etc. which I have 3 or 4 times. I run very good security system on my PC I have kaspersky and Maleware bytes. plus a password protected wireless DSL proxy which requires authentication to get access to my proxy network & internet. I build web sites for a living that is why i buy 3d content to use the art i create in my business,

This was not the first time I have credit card compromised, so after the first time i learn to be extra careful how i do my online business & why I always get fraud protection on all my credit cards. I never use my debit card or store my credit card information on any web site EVER!

This was a brand spanking new credit card with a $10,000 limit. has not been used any place but renderosity and Daz. there is no other place to trace this too.

So anyway the credit card company is lucky not to eat the $8000 in charges & issue me a new credit card within 30 days

But from now on all my online purchases at Daz and renderosity will be made with either a pre paid green dot credit card or my paypal account

This is the only way to be sure that it won't happen a 3rd time.

I've had a very similar experience to what was described by poisinivy. I purchased a Vanilla VISA Debit card so that I could buy an upgrade to poser 10. This was bought in the middle of February from the Renderosity Marketplace. I was really surprised when I checked my balance and found that there was a transaction by SKR*USA Skrill.com for $29.74 on 4 March. Since I only made the one transaction at the marketplace, perhaps there really was a problem here. The amount was not large so I chose not to pursue it. I've always been very happy with the marketplace and have not had any problems with any other transactions.

I was planning to buy couple of items from Cybertechno but the remaining $1.07 won't get me very far. In the future I'll by the debit cards for the exact amount I plan to spend in one session. the only problem with this is that there is a five dollar charge to activate each card.

There would've been no reason to even mention this if I had not come across this thread. While my loss was insignificant, poisinivy, I really do feel your pain.
