Subject: Want Your Library To Open/Display Instantaneously?...

Tired of that time lag, when searching through your library folders for that perfect sword or scantly clad outfit??? Easy to fix...just unistall Quick Time player from your machine. If you really must have QT installed on you "puter" (as a friend of mine needed it for Illustrator),there is another workaround.... Delete the "Mac" plugin found in your Runtime>ImageIOPlugins folder. This goes back to the legacy coding as the original Poser was ported to Mac's and used QT for display. You don't need it...but you will see a big different in your library display. SWAMP

Interesting. Is this for Mac or PC users, or both?

ockham ( ) posted Sun, 15 August 2004 at 5:25 PM

By George, it works! I use QT often for frame-by-frame viewing, so I can't get rid of it. As you described, I renamed the ***Mac.MRW plugin, and sure enough, things move about twice as fast!

Wow, that does make a big difference. Man, do I hate Quicktime. Once it gets its tentacles into your machine, you have to edit your registry to remove it. It constantly gives me that "qttask.exe." error message. I use it just enough to keep it around, but I'm constantly having to edit msconfig in order to keep it from automatically starting up every time I turn on the computer.

randym77,As I'm on a PC,I can't say how it works on a Mac.
But if you are on a Mac,try it....I suspect it may be calling for an older version of QT. Edited as I see you already tried it. SWAMP

However... Poser (for Windows, anyway) needs Quicktime in order to be able to open or save to certain image file types, including GIF and PCT. If you uninstall QT, this may get broken.

Bob, you're right. Without the Mac plugin, GIFs, PCTs, and a bunch of other file types vanish. You can no longer import or export them from Poser.

But I think it's fair trade, for me. The file types I use most often - PSD, JPG, PNG, and TIF - all still work. For now, I will rename the Mac plugin, just in case I find I need it in the future. Losing those file types is worth the speed increase, for me. I always postwork my images, anyway, if only to adjust them for filesize vs. quality issues. So if I really need a GIF, Photoshop can do it.

"Once it gets its tentacles into your machine, you have to edit your registry to remove it. " There really oughta be a law against installers that forcibly insert their settings into your registry. For me, the worst thing is programs that put their own defaults into the desktop-right-click mechanism, so that I have to pick from 10 different obscure kinds of documents (most of which refer to apps that I've already removed!) when trying to set up a simple shortcut.

I'm probably deluded, but it seems that this change also makes Poser's disobedient dialog boxes work a little faster. Especially the "don't save" choice.

What an awesome tip! My libraries are flyin now. The loss of .pct and .gif support is really no loss at all, LOL.

NomiGraphics ( ) posted Sun, 15 August 2004 at 6:12 PM

Wow! I must say this is excellent advice! I just changed the file from ImageIO_Mac.mrw to ImageIO_Mactemp.mrw and now my folders are screaming! Amazing how legacy code like this sticks around a program. - Noel

SWAMP ( ) posted Sun, 15 August 2004 at 6:19 PM

Well yes,if you rename or delete the plugin, you do lose GIF and PCT...but that's not too big a deal, as you can still convert/play/etc. outside of Poser. "Once it gets its tentacles into your machine, you have to edit your registry to remove it. " I hear you... While there are dozens of registry cleaners/editors out....."Registry First Aid" is miles ahead of all of them. It really will find EVERY unwanted registry entry.

Wow! Cool tip. Probably will not find this file on a Mac - it wouldn't be needed as the MacOS can handle pict and gif file types natively. Suspect MetaCreations just included this in the Windows version as the lazy way out (rather than implementing pict & gif support in the Poser code).

jelisa ( ) posted Sun, 15 August 2004 at 9:13 PM

I just did the rename on that plugin file and it took Poser 5 about 2 minutes to open rather than the approximately 7 to 10 minutes that it used to take. That alone makes this a good thing.

Jim Burton ( ) posted Sun, 15 August 2004 at 9:28 PM

Am I missing something here? My Libraries have always opened in a second or so, even back when I had a P4 on a Pentium 200. P5 also opens in about 10 seconds on my current 2.8 Pentium 4, might even be faster than P4. Maybe you guys just need faster computers... ;-) I do get a HUGE delay when it can't find a texture file and I tell it to stop looking, though.

Ooo, now that is a gem! :) Beth

wyrwulf ( ) posted Sun, 15 August 2004 at 9:52 PM

I just tried it, and it didn't seem to make a difference with Poser4 on an AMD 1800 plus.

jelisa ( ) posted Sun, 15 August 2004 at 10:02 PM

Jim, I have a 2.6 GHz P4 with 1 GB RAM and P5 has always taken forever to open on it. Your computer must like you or something :P

segart ( ) posted Sun, 15 August 2004 at 11:23 PM

Roy G ( ) posted Mon, 16 August 2004 at 12:35 AM

It works Great!!
Makes a big difference for those larger folders.

Started converting file formats already. No more gif's for me.

KarenJ ( ) posted Mon, 16 August 2004 at 12:35 AM

Jim, I have noticed that the size of the Runtime folder makes a lot of difference. If I open my "P5 Lights" runtime, at a mere 132mb, and then click between the library palettes, it's always been very fast, practically no delay. However, my V3 runtime, at a shade under 3gb, has always bogged the program down. This tip does seem to have improved the reaction speed by about 50% on my machine. I'm on Win XP, Athlon 2.4gb CPU with a gig of DDR RAM.

modus0 ( ) posted Mon, 16 August 2004 at 4:53 AM

I've got P5 on an external hard-drive, with most of my content in external runtime folders on the same drive, and noticed an annoying lag when doing anything in those runtimes. However, I renamed that file, and have experienced a marked decrease in the amount of time it take to switch between runtimes and load things from those runtimes. Thanks much.

ImageIO_Mac_M.mrw

Try renaming it, and see what happens. I'm curious about whether this tip works for Macs, too. If the Mac version really needs the file, you can always name it back.

I, too, find that dumping this file really speeds things up. I think it is related to the size of the runtime, and I guess mine are kind of bloated. It's noticeably faster, navigating around the library.

Wow works great. For anyone who wants to get rid of that qttask.exe, there is a little freeware program called hijackthis. It will get rid of it for you and it won't come back. http://s89223352.onlinehome.us/mirror/hjt/ This is the link for it. It should help you with your problem I have used it and gotten rid of different things and they haven't come back. Beth

Hi, I just renamed the file ImageIO_Mac_M.mrw to renamed_ImageIO_Mac_M.mrw on my apple mac G4 and I think it is very much faster switching between libraries eg pose to cameras to figures etc. Unless it's my imagination. Well I'll be darned. Love esther

Any other Worms out there want to try it, and see if it's Esther's imagination or not? ;-)

stewer ( ) posted Mon, 16 August 2004 at 6:49 AM

Sweet. While modularity is a good thing (why reinvent the wheel when there are already libraries that can do it for you), it looks like there must be something wrong with QT itself to make it that slow. Thanks for the tip! Rendering Quicktime movies is still working here (P5 on OS X), so just living without image formats I never use anyway is a small price to pay :)

Francemi ( ) posted Mon, 16 August 2004 at 7:46 AM

Poser launches faster and so do my bulkiest folders. This should be "Tip of the Year". Many thanks for this timesaver. I usually go and do several other things while Poser is launching, sometimes it's still not open when I come back.....this will be a life saver and I can add some files I've been keeping in a dummy runtime. Eureka!!! YOU found it!!!

Francemi ( ) posted Mon, 16 August 2004 at 10:03 AM

Do you think it would speed things up even more if we were to rename other extension plugins like FPX, TGA, TIFF? And should we rename also the file Messages_Mac.txt and other corresponding text files in the same folder? I only use PNG and JPG so I would not mind not having the rest of the extension plugins if it would make Poser work faster. France

Tashar59 ( ) posted Mon, 16 August 2004 at 11:04 AM

Before I try this. Has it effected Bryce? I only installed QT to get Bryce to read PNG's. I still need Bryce to read all the image formats.

EnglishBob ( ) posted Mon, 16 August 2004 at 11:14 AM

If you go the alternative route of renaming Poser's ***Mac.MRW plugin, Quicktime can stay installed and so Bryce will be unaffected.

Jim Burton ( ) posted Mon, 16 August 2004 at 11:21 AM

Yeah, that is probably it, I don't have much in my P5 runtime, I use it mostly for testing and I tend to delete the stuff when I'm finished.

Tashar59 ( ) posted Mon, 16 August 2004 at 11:31 AM

Thanks,I give it a try.

PJF ( ) posted Mon, 16 August 2004 at 1:29 PM

Is this tip for Poser5 only? My Poser4 libraries have always opened quickly, and there is a file named "ImageIO_Mac.mrw" in my ImageIOPlugins folder. Removing or renaming this file makes no difference - the libraries still open quickly. I have Quicktime6.1 installed. Maybe my 8GB Runtime counts as tiny nowadays? Glad so many benefitted from the tip. Good catch SWAMP.

maclean ( ) posted Mon, 16 August 2004 at 2:25 PM

Obviously this is an excellent tip, and it seems to make a difference for a lot of people. But I have to agree with Jim Burton. Both Poser 4 and 5 have always opened quickly on my machine (10secs and 30 secs respectively), and I've never had any problem with slow libraries. I have a similar machine to Jim's (P4 2.6/512RAM) and I also have a pretty small Runtime. I keep al the spare Runtime stuff elsewhere. I've never had Quicktime or any other unneccessary apps installed. If I don't need it, I don't install it. Simple as that. mac

maclean ( ) posted Mon, 16 August 2004 at 2:28 PM

Re-reading my post, something occurred to me. Poser 4 opened quickly on my old machine too, and it was an 800 Mhz junkheap. I don't think power is a factor with Poser. I've always kept a very slim Runtime, and I'm sure that's what makes the difference. mac
