Subject: new challenge idea...

okay, since folks are doing these cool path pictures I think we should run with it! How about this. create an image with a path, street, road, etc in it. to make it a challenge, you have to have trees or buildings or people or something in the picture too, and the path should be believably part of the picture. (that is, no just throwing "paths in the grass" material on the ground randomly like I'm always doing!). ultimate challenge for those who dare: the yellow brick road & the emerald city! ;) Mary

OOOHHH... A combination of the former with the new, eh? Sounds great to me! Good job Mary, once again. :) --Mike

oooh! where's kate? she was trying to make streets, and with railroad tracks going across 'em, too. ;)

tesign ( ) posted Thu, 25 January 2001 at 6:59 PM

Errr...what is "the yellow brick road & the emerald city!"...sorry Mary, I am from the EAst Asia living in a very small island that you can't even see on the map. Bill

black-canary ( ) posted Thu, 25 January 2001 at 7:06 PM

That is a reference to the book or movie "The Wizard of Oz." Oz is a magical land and a girl called dorothy goes there, and she is looking for "the wonderful wizard of oz" who can help her get home again. She meets up with some other folks who also want to find the wizard and they are told to "follow the yellow brick road" (which they sing a long and fairly entertaining song about in the movie). The yellow brick road leads to the emerald city, which is a city made of emerald (the green jewel), where the wizard lives. Pretty much every child in america grows up watching this movie on television or video, and it has a lot of neat images in it--flying monkeys, a wicked witch, a talking scarecrow, a tin man. If you've never seen it it's worth tracking down! Which small island do you live on, by the way? Mary

Wizard Of Oz... ...follow the yellow brick road.... Also loosely translated by Elton John: "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road..."

tesign ( ) posted Thu, 25 January 2001 at 7:25 PM

Mary - Looks like I have to visit the library and que up with the kids. I amy even find myself in a tussle with the children there...LOL! Btw, island is Singapore. Mike - I heard of that song by Elton but never knew it is related to "The Wizard of Oz". Looks like a lot been missing in me childhood days :) Bill

Hey Mary!!!! NO FAIR!!!!!! This is going to be a hard one :( I can feel myself pulling out my hair already.....and we haven't even started it......LOL ~ Sacred

tesign ( ) posted Thu, 25 January 2001 at 7:34 PM

Hey Beck...while you are at it...would you mind pulling mine for me too....LOL! Bill

MikeJ ( ) posted Thu, 25 January 2001 at 7:38 PM

Well, "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" was a part of the soundtrack to "The Whiz", a musical, which was a Broadway play in the mid-late '70's, and was loosely based on the original Wizard of Oz movie which * I think* came out in 1934, starring Judy Garland (Liza minnelli's mom), and, err, uhh, some other people...LOL

Hey Bill....no problems hun.... :) Anyone else want help? LOL Beck

Sacred Rose ( ) posted Sat, 27 January 2001 at 4:17 AM

Back on topic please............SOMEONE help!!!!.... I have pulled out 40% of my hair already, and I'm ready to start on Bill's. Please explain the path creation steps again, more slowly so my balding head can understand? Beck

MikeJ ( ) posted Sat, 27 January 2001 at 6:10 AM

Wait a minute...I all of a sudden can't remember if the song was actually part of the play or not, or just a coincidence....hmmmm.....Oh well, that was a long time ago! Sacred, I haven't ttried this yet, but I think the details for it were in the other thread originally by jarm. Hmmm...guess I oughta stroll on over there and have a look. ;) --Mike

Beck, just start by applying the builtin "paths in the grass" material to the ground. Then you can zoom in on a nice one and start sticking trees and stuff in there. However I *think* that path material uses a function to make the paths, layering a grass material over some other material for the paths, so I'm going to try to change the underlying material to a yellow brick (yellow brick map avail. at my site, by the way, in the vue tutorial)

Hello, Is this what the VC004 is about? This image is preliminary with no touchups. It is a bit rough around the edges. Later... hdrider

Nice one! I love the gazebo. The bench is hovering with one foot over the path though... :) Mary

Sacred Rose ( ) posted Sun, 28 January 2001 at 8:38 PM

well my blonde roots have severely become inground Mary. I have tried and tried....checked and d/l your tutorial, but nope.....I'm too stupid to work it out. I think I'll sit back in the corner with my dunce cap on and watch the big kids do this one....I might just see something that will make it stay aboveground in my brain long enough. Beck

Here's mine and how I did it...this was fun! Okay, so to start with, grab the "natural 2" landscape material. Go into it and see how it's 2 materials mixed together? Change the material mixing method to "cover"--this will layer the two materials instead of blending them. Now change material 1 to whatever you want your path to be. If you want a more clearly defined path, you need to load a different function for the layers...I created my own to get this. Really this is a yellow brick grid; I used trees to hide parts of it so it looks like a road! Oh the brick texture's on my site but it's not very yellow; I colorized this one in photoshop. Comments welcome! I'm going to render a larger one to put in the gallery... Mary

Mary, Was hoping no one would notice. I saw that when I previewed the message post. Like I said, it is the first draft. Thanks, hdrider

black-canary ( ) posted Mon, 29 January 2001 at 9:58 AM

Well, I noticed that my tin man is actually floating when I did a bigger render. That "interaction" thing is tricky, innit! :)

bloodsong ( ) posted Mon, 29 January 2001 at 12:47 PM

wow. you did the ultimate challenge challenge! cool :) do you really have bricks going straight up the mountain, though? i thought the road would kinda wind into the background and disappear towards the city, there. :)

black-canary ( ) posted Mon, 29 January 2001 at 12:54 PM

um...it's a magic road! Yeah, it's pretty darn straight, because I put the same griddy material mix on the terrain. Doing a windy road would involve another function...which would be hard! But I might try it, since I have to go back in and put sir mike's foot on the ground (that's the daz knight with mike's head...). I suppose I could just have trees going up the mountain and let people intuit that part of the road... Mary

MikeJ ( ) posted Mon, 29 January 2001 at 1:00 PM

Yes, the ultimate challenge-challenge challenge.. Did you actually replace the head, or you just hid body parts? BTW, very good work there Mary. --Mike

black-canary ( ) posted Mon, 29 January 2001 at 1:13 PM

I discovered that it's actually very easy to replace the head and make a permanent figure...I'm working on a tutorial. Basically for this figure I exported mike's head and neck as an obj, then imported them, positioned them properly and used the grouping tool to "spawn props". Then you just pick the head and the neck and do "replace body part with prop" for each. That gives you a figure with no head morphs at all, so you use morph manager to transfer the head morphs from mike to sir mike and voila, a perfectly good figure without a dorky head. Tute will be up on the site as soon as I can pull it together. (Since I can't distribute the figure when he's made this way) Mary

MikeJ ( ) posted Mon, 29 January 2001 at 1:27 PM

Huh! That's something I might have thought about doing, but I would have thought there would be a zero chance of getting morphs to work. Gotta try that...please get on with the tutorial!

Sacred Rose ( ) posted Mon, 29 January 2001 at 10:25 PM

Mary.....your tin man is awesome!!! After losing nearly 75% of my hair and starting on poor Bill's hair..and boy did he scream!!!!...I finally tried something else. I created a seperate terrain and made that my path. If I could only work out how to change the orientation of the bricks I would be happier...however, here is what I have for moment. ANY advice and suggestions on this WIP would be gratefully accepted...just ask Bill ;) I don't think he can take me pulling out any MORE of his hair LOL Beck ps. Can I borrow your tinman? ;)

Ok, this is still very much a WIP, but it's coming along nicely. Lot of detail work left to do on it. I still have to make the texture maps for the street markings (crosswalks, etc.) and the shop signs and so forth plus I haven't finished with my plantings. The whole thing is a stage set to be used as backdrops for different images - playground, fountain all that good "park" type stuff still has to be done. This is just one corner of the whole scene. Kate (who is still working on the train tracks thing)

Sacred Rose ( ) posted Tue, 30 January 2001 at 1:51 PM

Kate.....this is awesome tooooo. Can I be a pain , and ask you HOW you did this? Beck (totally amazed by all of the pics I have seen for this challenge)

black-canary ( ) posted Tue, 30 January 2001 at 3:08 PM

Wow, great stuff from everyone! Beck, don't feel bad about using a terrain--your picture looks great. Are you using the default brick texture? I'm not sure if you can rotate it inside the function but you can edit the bmp file if you want to turn it. Also you could experiment with different mapping styles.--it defaults to automatic, but sometimes the faces or spherical might work better...

KateTheShrew ( ) posted Tue, 30 January 2001 at 4:16 PM

Well, to be honest with you, Beck, I modeled the street corner pieces in Max (finally figured out that boolean thingie...Yay!) They're in two parts - the outer curb and the inner sidewalk. You just stick 'em together and then texture as you want. I've got to zip them up and stick 'em in free stuff one of these days, I guess. As for the rest, I simply created a basic "city block" group, put a charcoal gray asphalt texture on the ground plane and then dropped my blocks where I wanted them. the park is hollow and filled with a couple of low terrains. The buildings are from Bauments Mesh 3 CD. The perspectives are still a little off as far as the distances between blocks being to scale. My streets are a little wide. Once I get the basic layout done, I'm going to do an overhead shot and use that as a template for actually modeling the streets so I can put in crosswalks and speed markings and such. IF I ever get over this stupid head cold, that is. :) Kate

Sacred Rose ( ) posted Tue, 30 January 2001 at 5:43 PM

Mary.....thankyou for your tips...I will get back to my drawing board again. Kate....you worked out Max? grrrrrrr I have had my version of 3.1 since October last year, and I still can't figure how to modify that damn teapot! LOL Im sorry you are feeling sick...head colds are a pain in the .....! I hope u feel better soon. Maybe you could do what my kids do...spend some time with someone who's not sick, and pass it on...usually that gets rid of it for them! But guess who they pass it on to?;) Beck

KateTheShrew ( ) posted Tue, 30 January 2001 at 5:54 PM

LOL...I got the darn cold from hubby and the nephew...lord only knows where they got it. sometimes I wish they didn't believe so much in sharing grin No, I haven't worked out max. I can do a few things with primitives (now that I accidentally figured out the boolean thing) and I can use the "mesh edit" to manipulate models other people have made, but that's about it. I still need to figure out how to put a bevel on a couple of the edges on the street corner pieces. The little gaps between the concrete blocks in the sidewalk just are not there. The edges are too perfect and square and you can't see where one ends and the other begins. Fine for distance shots but for closeups, forget it. Wouldn't it be nice if e-on would add a beveled edge box to the primitives list? Kate

Sacred Rose ( ) posted Tue, 30 January 2001 at 11:46 PM

Well...someone needs to tell them not to share as much LOL Re Max......U have worked out more than I have!! I opened the box...looked at the 2 reference books....(written by pythagoras for Einstein, read 3 chapters and sealed them in their decorative tomb (the box they came in), where they have been since their birthing ritual...(opening the box) ROTFL. It would be really nice if e-on could supply a lot of things...beveled edging is one of them, a functions editor that doesnt crash when you fiddle with its values too often is another thing :) I guess we just have to wait for the next release of Vue to find out what they will improve, include, or remodel if anything. Beck

KateTheShrew ( ) posted Wed, 31 January 2001 at 10:20 AM

Yup, and if the rumors are anywhere near the truth, the next version of Vue is gonna be kickass. Of course if the rumors are WRONG it'll still be kickass. :) Kate

MikeJ ( ) posted Wed, 31 January 2001 at 1:20 PM

Cool work there Kate. It doesn't look exactly what I would call "real", and I hopr you realize what I mean. It kind of looks like a photo of a building from of one of those those miniature railroads that people make. In THAT sense it does look very real, to me. To me, MAX is a complete mystery. I don't have it, and I doubt I'll ever get it, at least not before I learn all the stuff I DO have. But I like what you have done here. It's "homey" so to speak, if that makes any sense. --Mike

KateTheShrew ( ) posted Fri, 02 February 2001 at 1:05 PM

Mike, I know what you mean by it doesn't look "real." It's too sharp and clean, plus it's still fairly sterile in that there are no living beings cluttering it up. It's still a WIP. Now that I have things pretty much laid out the way I want them, it's time to go in and work on my textures and then add people to it to bring it to life. I'm glad you think it's "homey." It's based on the small town my grandmother lived in and where I would spend my summer every year until I finally left home. I just made the park/town square a bit larger than it was in real life. :) Kate
