Subject: How many artists notify content creators about their work being used?

gagnonrich ( ) posted Sat, 14 March 2009 at 12:10 PM · edited Tue, 24 December 2024 at 7:07 AM

Does everybody let content creators know when they're using their products in an image?

I've found that they mostly respond to it. With many Poser artists having thousands of free and paid items in their inventory, most Poser products will never see much use. When one finally does get used in an image, it's fairly special.

There have occasionally been posts by content creators wondering if their products have been used.

I've usually gotten good responses when I let people know I'm using their products. They'll often drop a comment on the gallery after they see it.

My visual indexes of Poser content are at http://www.sharecg.com/pf/rgagnon

Nope.. I think I've gotten maybe 4 total PMs or emails that something of mine was used somewhere, yet I've sold thousands and thousands of units of products.

And ya know what? I have a folder for each product with saved images when I see something someone used I created.

CaptainJack1 ( ) posted Sat, 14 March 2009 at 12:19 PM

I always try to let people know when I've used their stuff, especially if it was free. With renders, I try to include a note in the comments about the image, and send the creator a note via site mail. With animations, I make a credits reel for the end and reference who made whatever I used.

Yes.

And when I do a comic book cover, those who have contributed to it in someway get listed on it.

I generally dont remember who made what. I redo my runtimes so thing are arranged by type of item , not the vendor. Who can remember a vendor name when you just want to load a chair , and you have a dozen of them .  If a freestuff item requires credit in its readme I usually discard it.

I think most vendors would prefer not to be associated with my pics anyway :(

JOELGLAINE ( ) posted Sat, 14 March 2009 at 3:41 PM

I have NO clue who did maybe 97% or more of my Runtime content.  I use the content like markers and colored pencils to make images.  I do so much modifications in figures, clothes and poses, I really don't know where most came from.  Some stuff is iconic.  All of Stefan Morel's (Stonemason) and Les and Bekah's (Sixus1) stuff is SO identifiable, it's almost redundant to even mention them in a pic, because everyone who'd recognize the name, had already spotted it in the pic,

In using two dozen to fifty items in one pic, how can I keep track without breaking my work-flow to make lists that are more likely than not wrong? If it's something someone gave me, I make a point of mentioning it to them.

I think it IS asking to much to mention everything someone uses in a render.. I sure as heck don't, even when it's my OWN stuff!

As a content creator, it's very bizarre though to sell a bunch of something, see a ton of downloads of it, and then never see a render of it anywhere.

Acadia ( ) posted Sat, 14 March 2009 at 3:47 PM

I do sometimes.

However, if someone has gifted me with something, or I've used a freebie that I think makes the image pop, I will always send a PM letting them know that I created an image using their product.

Mostly I'm just happy to see my stuff getting used.

There are occasional exceptions.  About a year ago, somebody used my
Carillon, along with its MIDI script, to create a really fine animation.  He
posted it here and gave the impression that the whole thing was his own
work.  That was irritating!

I do only if a large part of the picture is from one particular scene or centered around a specific prop. But mostly I just can't remember who did what. And in some cases I am not sure if the content providers would even like to KNOW about that kind of picture existing ;)

Occasionally I get an email or PM from someone who has used my stuff. In those cases I do my best to see what they've made and if it's in a gallery where I CAN comment, I usually does, too.

I've done the occasional Vanity Searches in the galleries here, and only seen my things a fraction of the time compared to the numbers sold. Then again I have many things in my runtime I either bought or downloaded for free because of it's "WOW COOL" factor - yet never actually used it in a render (yet) and I bet that's the same for many here :)

With purchased content I don't feel obligated to acknowledge its use, but I try to recognize freebie creators, though I can't always remember everyone.  I'll reference both, if I think my image is half decent.

aeilkema ( ) posted Sat, 14 March 2009 at 6:53 PM

I do once in a while, if I still know who created the content I've used in an image. Most of the time I don't do it, I've got better things to do then try and track who made the content I'm using in my images. I'm creating about 5-10 images a week, most using quite some content in it, so imagine trying to first of all remember who made what, then track down the creator and then contact him. Even then I often couldn't show then the work, since it's made for others.

In the past when I still was creating games I would often contact the creators of the content and often credit their work in the games. But more then half of them never responded, so I stopped doing that, unless I know they do appreciatte it.

I wondered because some were saying they didn't know/remember who created the content. Readmes have the vendor names/site where purchased in them.

I keep the compressed files, readmes, etc..  Periodically, I move them to more permanent storage.  I also use the compressed files to figure out where assets are in my own runtime.  For instance, where are the different material poses?  What came with this package?  Etc..

Poser sucks ass at organizing content by item.  Plain and simple.  There is no easy way to tell what itemxxx came with, when you got it, what else in your runtime is associated with it, etc..  That's due to the nature of its menu system and the fact there is NO generally accepted standards regarding naming conventions along with nothing in the way of any indexing referrences.

I can't stand that.

Artist xx puts out a clothing pack, names the Character folder contents "Artistxx", the Pose folder "!!SuperDuper Square Hat collection MATS", the Props folder contents "Hat Pins", the Lights folder contents "XX's Lights" and the extra procedural Materials contents "Hey, look, some stuff!" ...

It's madening and has been going on, evidently, for 8+ generations of Poser incarnations.  /sigh

CaptainJack1 ( ) posted Sat, 14 March 2009 at 8:43 PM

I keep folders on a hard drive for free items, so I can credit the maker later. I've got a folder for where it came from, and then a folder with the artist's name. For example, if I had downloaded something of my own from here, I'd put it in FreeStuff/Renderosity/CaptainJack1. I always keep the original archive, too, in case I need it, so all of the information about it is there. It makes it a lot easier to credit the artist I got it from later, or to contact that person if I have a question about it.

JVRenderer ( ) posted Sat, 14 March 2009 at 8:48 PM

I seldom mention vendors, I do try to give freebies providers credit. I frankenstein most of the models, I usually don't remember what the original content creators are.

Actually, the promo page gives credit, albeit with a minor misspelling. It's Digital Curlz at DAZ, by Neftis.

I've done it once or twice. One vendor was nice enough to come see it, the other was too busy (and a good thing too...;)

I try to at least credit vendors when I use stuff. But I make a lot of my own stuff, too. As for emailing, I really don't do that much in any context...

3/4 of the time the freebie readmes get overwritten because everyone calls them README without anything different. Im not going to change any names unless I know that I need a specific readme to use a product properly. I just don't have time to go around  renaming things.

Faery_Light ( ) posted Sun, 15 March 2009 at 4:02 PM

I don't send a PM to the creator but I do give credit. A lot of the freebies I have are missing the readmes so I can't always give credit. I always try to give credit on the background if it is a photo due to copyright issues. That's why I try to keep the readme file too. I like to know what the terms of use are to avoid problems down the rad. :)

I do keep the readme's, but with over 30 Gb of content even going through readme's takes a while. Once you find one you notice that you've purchased the item years ago and that the email adres in the readme isn't very current anymore.

Besides most readme's are called readme and overwrite the old ones, unless they're installed a special folder, but most content creator do not do that, they all install in the same place.

TrekkieGrrrl ( ) posted Sun, 15 March 2009 at 5:09 PM

I usually name my readmes the same as the item, so it would be Flyswatter_README.txt for the one that comes with the flyswatter for instance.

But they do not end up in a specific folder.  My stuff will default to a TrekkieGrrrl.... folder (with a few exceptions back when I didn't know better) but I know well that a lot of people have their own way of organizing their runtimes and probably won't keep it there. I move stuff around myself to a more "logical" (to me) folder.

And so it's difficult to dig up the original creator, and if it's a 8 year old prop, I'm certainly not going to search for the backup cd with the zip just to see who made it. Not ill will;  it's just not feasible.

A few merchants/freebie creators put a stamp/logo on their thumbnails. That makes it easier to remember who made what.

To point out one of my longstanding rants, having a readme that's named "ReadMe" which is placed in the main runtime folder of the distributed zip is so completely bloody useless that unless there's actual useful information in it, I generally don't read it or care if it gets overwritten by another person such mad L337 naming skillz.

gagnonrich ( ) posted Mon, 16 March 2009 at 9:35 AM

The majority of people I've notified have left comments in the gallery and appreciate seeing their products in use.  I know that I'd enjoy it if I released a product or freebie. You can take a look at my gallery and see that it happens. If somebody doesn't respond, I won't notify them in the future if I use their products. It's not a problem to me if they don't leave a note because everybody is busy and there's no way of knowing if an old email address is still valid.

I can understand the logistics issue that a lot of people have keeping track of readmes and products. Once a product is installed, the readme very quickly get unassociated with it.

In my case, I've played around with Poser for a long time. Back when 20Mb hard drives were over $300, I learned the hard way that a large runtime quickly chokes a computer and older computers were slow opening up a large folder full of items in the Poser library. Deleting Poser content is a chore because of all the locations that files go. I got into the habit of only installing content when I need to use it. That makes it easy saving a note file of what goes into an image because I'm only doing it for the files that I'm immediately using. I've built up a good visual index of a lot of my content so I don't rely on my runtime for looking at my content, but even that is fast falling behind. For most people, installing to their runtime is the only visual means of seeing their content.

A nice feature to add to Poser or DAZ Studio would be a library right click on a thumbnail to find copyright info on a file. Poser files are large text files, so it ought to be easy to set aside early comment lines for that purpose. Since they're comment lines, they're backward and forward compatible because they do nothing to the file structure that any software program uses.

My visual indexes of Poser content are at http://www.sharecg.com/pf/rgagnon

I'm sorry...when I asked about the Readme's I totally forgot my external runtime is set up completely different than most of yours. I have folders with separate runtimes for each item so the readme's stay in tact and aren't overwritten. The only other thing(s) added to each folder are addons. The readmes are usually titled different. I.E. "City Line" for Cowgirl. It's usually the license agreement that's overwritten...which is no biggie, because if it is, it's known all the folder's contents came from Rendo.

As far as the topic---when I do an image, I credit all products used. I do this mainly for the viewers, as many times I've seen an image, and wondered where I could get the items.

Sivana ( ) posted Mon, 16 March 2009 at 10:22 PM

However, I wonder why people made some freebies or vendors sell their producs if they always want to get mentioned?? I think the whole Poser or Render Communitiy knows each stuff as we are all looking through the same shops or freeware. If you are a render junky for a long time, you can see from whom the content is done. We all know the different hairstylez and nowbody would belive that the artist would have made this by itself. We all know the different dresses, characters and so on.

ratscloset ( ) posted Tue, 17 March 2009 at 1:12 AM

Two things.. if Vendors would name Readmes other than Readme or at least place them in a Folder for the Name of the Product, users might be more apt to keep them straight.

I agree it is nice idea, but the reason they include a License to allow you use is so you do not have to give credit or contact the creator when you use the content in any commercial/public Render.

I will add that I immediately delete any product Free or otherwise from my system that includes a License that requires providing Credit or Contact to use the product in commercial/public Renders, once it is downloaded/paid for. I have noticed that most Free Items, other than those by the owners of the bigger stores, have a limit on the use so I stopped getting them. There are a few Vendors that I do not even bother buying their paid products because they have some limits on the use of their content, either due to a badly worded License, or intentionally (such as giving credit or getting approval for Public Display of the content). They are out there.

I think most Creators would be interested in seeing their products in use, but I think it is sort of like the Poser Sightings... it is better when someone notices that Image at such and such has product A or Figure B in the image.
