Yep, I didn't have the V4 option fully set on 1.00.

Laurie, the only displacement maps I have for anything Genesis came in skin texture sets or for clothing. When I load a blank Genesis into Studio, it comes in with no textures of any kind and I usually don't even use skin displacement maps unless I need heavy veins or that kind of thing.

Just put on a V4 skin and you then have displacements, bump etc.

Oh, for anyone who wants to try some Genesis morphs before buying any official sets, there are a whole bunch of them in this free set:
http://www.sharecg.com/v/58198/View/11/Poser/DieTryings-182-V4-Morphs-for-Genesis?interstitial_displayed=Yes
I haven't installed them and am not sure if they come over to Poser like other morphs, but it's the biggest free set that I know of.
edited: I just decided to install them now and they are definitely worth it. Very good shaping and individual scaling morphs and a few that aren't in any of the DAZ sets.

Thanks for letting us know about the V4 morphs. Surprise, there's an Antonia for DS4, lol: http://www.sharecg.com/v/59715/related/21/DAZ-Studio/Antonia-WM-for-DAZ-Studio-4
Very nice renders everyone!

Well, you may have technical people and marketing people and business honchos not exactly on the same page. The techies are gonna promote their work. The Bidness folks have to strike a balance between promoting their platform vs. promoting the content. It kind of strikes me like Microsoft selling Office (content) for the Mac. while selling a competing platform - Windows - delicate surgery on a golden goose :-)

The amazing thing is that it took Cliff to this!!! Not the company etc.
Plus it takes a thread here to get things noticed. NOT, repeat NOT gettinging into a P contest, but where is the sticky over at DAZ? Where is the big publicity that this tutorial can do what they thought couldn't be done?
As a business you want to get as much custom as possible.
Now, back on topic.
I know that you can only have 1 UV per export, so it's really just a matter of doing an export for V4, M4, V5, M5, Hitomi etc.
I'm assuming that an Aiko morphed Genesis will work off the V4 UV. So, you don't need that.
I'll have a go at the clothing etc. today and see how they come across.
Cliff is on to a winner with this tutorial, and it seems as if DAZ needs to see what he has done and give him and the tutorial the publicity it needs!!!!!

Sorry Cliff, no chance of me being in the contest over at DAZ, naughty people like me cannot post etc. Lol.
But, saying that, good luck and I still think it should have been in the Commons sticky section.

Quote - Sorry Cliff, no chance of me being in the contest over at DAZ, naughty people like me cannot post etc. Lol.
No problems you naughty, naughty person you! Actually most of the renders in the compo thread so far aren't entries, they're mostly just celebrations of using Genesis in Poser so far (to be fair, it hasn't been running long and it takes people time to come up with a good original render. At least, it takes me a lot of time!). I think more than a few people are stunned that Poser can do a pretty fine job with the figure, especially if given a little love.
I SHOULd probably emphasis again that all I've done is write a tut and a couple of python scripts - neither of which would have been possible without people like Rob at DAZ or the coders in Team Poser. Without their efforts at improving the co-operation between Poser and Genesis I wouldn't have been compelled to see if I could ease the workflow and improve on the results with minimum extra effort. So I think I've provided an important and useful brick, but it's presently at the top of a very large pyramid!
Quote - But, saying that, good luck and I still think it should have been in the Commons sticky section.
That would probably be my fault rather than DAZ's per se - I was fairly anxious to avoid starting another pithing contest between Studio and Poser users so I started the threads in the Poser and Commercial forums (I'm allowed commercial and one other, I believe) as I thought that would help to target those that would be most interested, and avoid annoying at least half of those who would be most incensed by this effort. However, if anyone wants to start an honest-to-goodness positive thread in The Commons about it I am powerless to stop them.
Want me to see if I can stretch the compo to include renders posted over here? I'm not sure who I'd have to co-ordinate with at Renderosity to see if that would be acceptable (I fear the compo is too close to publicity for it to fly, and as I say - I'd rather avoid ruffling any feathers that don't need to be ruffled). I haven't nailed down the specifics (ooh, must go and post an end date - I keep forgetting that!) but I'm getting DAZ to donate some Genesis "Pro" goodies as prizes (need to firm that up with them as to how much I can co... persude them to give up lol).
As you can see, I'm being just as businesslike as I usually am in my tut threads (at least I haven't called "marketing" by the more accurate term of "bs" yet). Oooh, I wonder if I can get some of the users to post their images over here? Let me think about how I might reword the compo rules to permit that.
Anyone who isn't too naughty to post at DAZ is free to tell me in the DAZ compo thread that it needs moving - I'm pretty sure they'll accomodate if it seems to be a useful enough idea. They've been quite positive and encouraging about the whole thing evey since I wrote the original basic version of the tut for my fellow DAZ PAs - I have a feeling that they want to gauge just how much genuine interest there is in Genesis from people who really DO want to use it in Poser. Rather than just me bleating on about how much I like Genesis but Studio 4, not as much!
Cheers,
Cliff
Thanks Cliff, and a BIG thank you to all involved.
The thing is, you have started something that has caught people imagination. They have seen the results and can now make up their minds about things.
From what I remember, previous instructions were not explained as good as this, the work flow is easy enough for even myself, who has hardly touched DS4 Pro to work through.
For those that want to get Genesis across into Poser, then this IS THE TUTORIAL for you to get. No, Cliff isn't paying me!!! Lol.
Those that know me, know I do't give glowing recommendations UNLESS it is something that I think would be of use to other Poser users. Well, this is it, get it, use it, enjoy it.

HI Cliff, the one thing I have noticed is that the thumbnail created for the Genesis figure etc. doesn't give a representation of the item. On mine I get squiggles etc. No big problem for myself as I can make thumbnails quite easily.

Came out to about 3 minutes.

Argh, that's a quirk of DAZ Studio that I didn't think to document - I've gotten so used to the fact that while Poser produces visable, useable thumbs every time you add something to a library, Studio creates these completely useless thumbnails. It's as if it's using a different camera which is pointing in a completely random direction... I've never bothered to track it down as it seemed easier to just render my own thumbnails using Poser or Studio.
This isn't something DAZ have done specifically to annoy Poser users - this is something DS4 (and indeed DS3 as far back as I can recall) does to me on all files I save, even DAZ Studio scenes and presets :(
Oh, and I failed to respond to an earlier comment - yes, the Gen4 female shapes (Aiko4, Girl4, V4) all use the same UV, so you only need to export one character per UV set. I actually have a little duplciation in that the "default" Genesis uses the V4 UV set, but my "default" V4 loads with no textures (just clay grey!) while the one I label "V4" loads with the default nipple-free V4 style texture.
I've no idea why there's no Nipple morph on Genesis to start with - the geometry is there, so such a morph can be created with magnets or Hexagon and so forth easily enough, and I think there's a nipple morph or two in the set that SnowSultan linked to earlier in the thread. :shrug.
Again - I hope that DAZ can improve their thumbnail-creation capability at time of saving a file. It would be convenient :)
Cheers,
Cliff
No probs Cliff.
For those wanting a thumbnail.
Go to the Render menu at the top of the screen.
Select the Render Dimensions option.
Change to Render Exact Resolution.
Take off the tick in Constrain aspect ratio.
Change Width and Height to 98.
Select the OK button.
You may need to move your Genesis figure for better posing.
Add lights and do a final render.
File menu at the top of the screen.
Select the Export option.
Browse to the folder your Genesis figure is.
Select the File name and then the Save button.
You now have a nice thumbnail.
Never understood the reason for Genesis not to have nipples?????? Lol.

"Never understood the reason for Genesis not to have nipples?????? Lol."
I think it may have something to do with Studio's auto-fitting and smoothing settings, you don't usually want the nipples and navel to affect how clothing fits unless it's an ultra skin-tight suit, so it's safer just to let you choose when to make them visible or not (plus you can adjust the parameter values of each if they have dials).

A quick question Cliff, If I drop this out now as a OBJ, repeat with the V5 option, can I load them back into the base version and do a morph version that now has a V4 and V5 fit?
All the best.

Ah - that'd be why it doesn't have a navel by default either. Imagine the mess that could make of clothing as the shape auto-morphs {shudder}

If I read you right - no, because it's not the mesh that's changed but the rigging - despite how it actually looks in Poser. Did you have fun with the clothing before applying the script? I have to confess that the first time I ran the script and it had that effect on a top, pants, boots and hair all in one go I literally laughed out loud. To see that... mess coalesce into a (reasonably) consistent clothed figure was a delight that first time. I'm SO glad I was alone when the scripts reached that stage, as otherwise I suspect people would have looked at me quite strangley! It was definately one of those "YES!" moments :)
It's a pity that not all content behaves as well as that top - some hair and pants in particular can be troublesome for reasons outside the scope of the existing python routines. Good to see you having fun though!

Cliff

I do that when my modeled dynamic clothes drape like I wanted them too. Hubby somethings looks up to see if I'm ok...lol.
So, this works on hair and shoes too? I figured it was just clothes :P.

Quote - So, this works on hair and shoes too? I figured it was just clothes :P. Python is a wonderful thing...lol.
Hair to a degree - works best with short hair, most long hair seems to fall apart. Shoes and boots - I don't have many, but so far they could be the things that work best! I'm not aware of any problems with footwear at all (though of course some will probably have poke-through issues due to the mesh smoothing issues). V5's long-hair ponytail is one of the few exceptions to the long-hair rule in that it works REALLY well (no problems at all that I've found). I haven't used it much, but once you set the materials, set the Genesis morph, and run the python script - it fits, ot looks hair-ish (though I think the textures can be improved and, yes, I'd actually like a higher poly-count myself for closeups).
One thing I've been wondering about would be some kind of compatability thread somewhere - where the first post gets updated based on later posts showing how well given items work - and/or where they fail. you know the kind of thing - works flawlessly / works but with some problems / should be taken out and shot. Maybe even finer graduiations where specific issues and any possible workarounds could be mentioned. But it's really difficult to guage the amount of interest there'd be, how much work there'd be, and how many people we'd P off by showing renders of their stuff looking less than perfect. remember - everyone making Genesis add-ons has been working largely under the assumption that Genesis doesn't relaly WORK in Poser, so there has been zero accounting for using conformers in Poser so far as far as I know. That's got to impact how many things will have... issues.
Cheers,
Cliff
The long hair ponytail seems to work fine - except there is a problem at the back of the hair. Somehow the neck and the head are scaled differently and the mesh either breaks up or dives into the skull. From the front you don't see it. I have not found a way around it except for parenting the figure to the head.
Other hair is more visible. I think it is because the genesis head is scaled and the hair should be scaled with the head, but since there are in most genesis hairs separate head and neck pieces they scale separately. But this is my guess
LaurieA - bear in mind that I've cherry-picked this hairstyle because I already know it works well, even though it's long.
this image has had no material adjustments - it's just Genesis with the Abominable morph, the ponytail, and the JS boots. Screen capture.
This image the only change is that I've run one script on the Genesis figure to fix up the joints.
Looking at the Abominable character even this long hair IS scrunching at the back - let me knock up a render...
you can clearly see where the head and neck sections are parting company :(
...and it's examples like this that I think would make for a great compatability chart - I'd put this under "has problems but can be used as long as you avoid seeing back of head".
Whereas others which suffer from the same technical problem I wouldn't recommend, as they're just unuseable (IMHO) on characters other than perhaps the base Genesis ones.
Quote - Very cool Cliff. Exactly where is Daz hiding the Poser forum? I couldn't find it lol.
It's cunningly concealed! you can go to daz, click on "Community" and then CLICK on "Forums" (ignore the pop-up menu, that won't help as it only lists a small subset of the forums) and then scroll down. Further. A bit further. a little further - there, about 5th from the bottom.

WOW, at last a thread that can discuss Poser, Daz and Genesis all in same thread and you don't have to wade through loads of dross to find good information. I know this is mainly down to basicwiz in deleating post but this is a breath of fresh air.
I have never been against Genesis but I have always wanted to see what benefit I would get from spending my money in that direction, even if I had to move to DS4. Now it looks as though I may start seeing some renders that allow me to come to a rational and sensible decision.
Many thanks to all those that have put their effort in this venture and those working to keep the thread alive.
I use Poser 13 on Windows 11 - For Scene set up I use a Geekcom A5 - Ryzen 9 5900HX, with 64 gig ram and 3 TB storage, mini PC with final rendering done on normal sized desktop using an AMD Ryzen Threadipper 1950X CPU, Corsair Hydro H100i CPU cooler, 3XS EVGA GTX 1080i SC with 11g Ram, 4 X 16gig Corsair DDR4 Ram and a Corsair RM 100 PSU . The desktop is in a remote location with rendering done via Queue Manager which gives me a clearer desktop and quieter computer room.
I'm not sure I have contributed that much. I just cleaned up a fire fight near the front end. From that point on, it has been all of the many posters who have kept this thread on track, friendly, and informative.
I, for one, want to thank all of you who have accomplished this ON YOUR OWN.
It sure does make my job easier!
Now, back to the discussion!
I hope the exporter will get an update as well. The problem with locked dials and hidden dials is a nasty one (Usually the dials in the clothing or hair which is exported). The responsiveness for some dials should be changed as well (default of 1.0 is not good for normal dials)
One tip for those who are using the exporter and the scripts: Some of the clothing and hair is already shaped according to the figure (like Hitomi). If you want to export it, you will need to touch the dial - even if it has already been set to 1 when you load the cloth. If you don't, the morph will not be exported. I think it depends on how it was originally saved in DS4
Quote - I hope the exporter will get an update as well. The problem with locked dials and hidden dials is a nasty one (Usually the dials in the clothing or hair which is exported).
I've been repeatedly reassured that work continues on it, but work that doesn't produce a viable improvement isn't going to see light of day. So we don't get to see the toil going into the exporter, only the results when there's something useful to show.
I loathe the locked dials with a vengeance. DAZ have been able to reproduce the issue - and even comment on an extension of it (a related issue) and have assigned it. It's this badly typed report:
https://bugs.daz3d.com/view.php?id=46826
It can be worked around to a degree, in limited situations, but not well enough for me to want to include in the tutorial (a segment labelled "This will rarely if ever be of use to you, but if this and that and the other THEN you might be able to..." seemed like a bad idea.
As for the thread going so well - it's been a blast! Thoroughly fun. What a wonderful way to come back to releasing a product, after years where my health was too poor for me to be able to finish anything to a level of quality that I was happy enough with! You've no idea how pleasing it's been - and I can tell you that sales figures don't count in that, because that's one of the many things I don't have access to at present with the DAZ site in such a state! LOL
Cheers,
Cliff
LOL this does a better job at getting shoes on Genesis than Daz autofit. Nice job.
Cliff I appreciate the extensive time you spent and posted the results on the old forum trying to get this to work. I keep hoping there will be a way to export a subdivided Genesis from DS-but it the meantime I think your tut will help a lot of people.
Quote - Many thanks to LaurieA for starting this thread, and to basicwiz for cleaning it up before I saw it.
A couple of updates!
The intro discount was mistakenly set to 30% for just a few days - that has now been corrected, it whould be 40% now for about a week before dropping to 30% for the remainder of the intro period.
This is indeed only a tutorial and a couple of scripts. However, Genesis shouldn't need the scripts running again after reposing unless the joint centers are change (e.g. if you change from "Freak 4" to "The girl 4" shapes). If all you're doing is posing the figure then there should be no reason to re-run the scripts.
This tut was written in part due to frustration in seeing no update to the .CR2 exporter for a while, ANd no update to the existing documentation which left some users floundering. There were far too many comments about Poser not being able to use Genesis, about limitations in Poser that I don't beleive exist, and requests for a tutorial on how to use the current - not original - .CR2 exporter. So it's half frustration at the speed of software development, half frustration at the lack of proper documentation, half an attempt to sort out the myths of what Poser can and can not do, and half an attempt for me to make some money out of the time I put into tutorials (this is my first pay-for tutorial. It's not meant to signify the end of my forum tutorials, but really - I'd like the forum to work better first!). The reasons for creating it are therefore very, very similar to the reasons I created the Figure Setup Tools tutorial on-forum. but with the benefit that I might get something back :)
I've also started a render competition - I'd like us to be able to show DAZ exactly why they should be supporting us Poser users. I WANT them and Smith Micro to actively see Poser users and Genesis users as not being different camps, but just... us. I'm not sure if a linky is permitted, so I'll leave it for now - don't want too much self-promotion!
Cheers,
Cliff
Cliff As Laurie said-she does look better than expected. I did get the cr2 exporter to work months back-but the character looked a little too faceted-even with smoothing, evidently I was not using the right settings.
Quote - And I figure a close-up of the ehad, includign ear, is probably a good idea. Obviously I'm not putting a lot of effort into these - default render rate and so forth. The promos qwere rendered with a LOT more care to detail!
Did anyone notice I used Poser Dynamic Hair for one of the Mr Hyde renders - on his head and under-arms? I've been a bit surprised no-one has had a chuckle at that TBH ;)
Cheers,
Cliff
If you only have to export once per UV, then it begs the question why doesn't creator sell the cr2 and some texture maps (pz2's or mc6's) ala they way they sold V4 and include cliff's scripts to fit clothes (unless I am missing something obvious)? It would drive their content sales to a higher level if the casual Poser user doesn't have to install the latest version of studio and monkey around to get things installed and running. Plus it would cover those who say they can't run the latest and greatest veersion of studio on their cpu, but can run Poser.
Gary

Quote - So you export a Genesis per UV set. Do you need seperate CR2's for the extreme body morphs too? Or can poser handle those, or does python handle those?
Gosh no - think of how many .CR2's you'd need to accomplish that! Poser isn't the IDEAL Genesis host - it wasn't designed in combination with the Genesis content in a symbiotic way in the way I beleive DS4 was - but the Poser Team have still done a heck of a lot of work updating Poser for the latest generation, including work to specifically support Genesis (it would appear - I have no significant inside knowledge from either camp).
Each and every Genesis .CR2 supports all the shapes that one has/had installed when it was exported from Studio - from teenie tiny girlie to huge hulking Mr Hyde :)
Quote - If you only have to export once per UV, then it begs the question why doesn't creator sell the cr2 and some texture maps ...?
An excellent question. As I mentioned above, I don't have significant inside info but I certainly am opinionated - and I have some ideas on the whole issue, though I'm afraid they are neither consistently pro-DAZ nor anti-DAZ :( . I originally wanted to include the base Genesis pre-converted with this tutorial, but that wasn't possible. I've got to run an errand shortly so I don't have time to write the probably lengthy response to this, but on my return I MAY make a new thread on the topic rather than risk spoiling the incredibly positive and pleasant attitude in this thread with any negative or contrary thoughts on the way Genesis is provided to the public.
Cheers,
Cliff

OK, I think I can reasonably answer that here rather than making a new thread by keeping my rambling to a minimum and jettisoning a lot of the history build-up to where we are today, and instead concentrate on where we are rather than how we got there.
Genesis itelf is, as of today, not only the result of past business decisions but also effectively part of DAZ Studio. It's also not a figure, in the traditional sense, so much as it is a paltform for designing figures on. It's the latest generation of the "human figure development platform" that in previous years has been kept internal to DAZ, not provided to end users at all. Genesis itself is however MUCH like the Gen4 figures - V4, M4 etc. in that there's a mesh, with a rig, and you can add textures and morphs and the like - but the major difference, from my point of view, is that "Genesis the concept" only starts there - with the option to be enhanced in other ways. I suspect that these aspects make DAZ too nervous to release a "Poser version" of Genesis because it would make for a lesser figure than the Studio version of Genesis, so could easily be seen as a bit of a rip-off for Poser users.
LOL, even now I'm finding myself deleting paragraphs of stuff because I'm getting too wrapped up in it and too detailed. I can't speak for DAZ - I don't KNOW enough of the reasons that they do things - but my guess is that they don't release a .CR2 Genesis for the following reasons:
As it currently stands, it's simply not designed to work in Poser. You can do a LOT with the figure in Poser, but you can do more, more easily in Studio - because it was developed symbiotically with Studio. A lot of design decisions appear to have come about without any consideration for making it work in Poser - seemingly because they originally didn't think Poser would get the level of upgrade that it DID get with the most recent generation. A cock-up, but we're here now, and have to deal with "what is" rather than "what could have been". They have developed their own way of doing things like adding in extra characters, geografting - even the mesh smoothing, none of which is directly Poser-compatible.
A lot of the problems stem, actually, from being where we are post Genesis-creation rather than where we could have been. Right now there ARE add-ons for Genesis which simply wouldn't work in Poser. At least, I wouldn't be able to make them do so without a ton of work. You need the kind of dance documented in my tutorial just to get clothing to work with many Genesis shapes, it's not easy to add a new shape to Genesis figures (you have to re-export from Stduio if you add a new shape - D3 or M5 etc.).
Those things which can - or could - be done in Poser would take a whole lot of work - and work means time, and time is money. It would take work for them to include IK in the .CR2 exporter - and they would want, I am sure, to do a better job of it than I have. It would take money to backtrack on the way UV switching is done to make that Poser-compliant... or to develop something that works as simply and easily as just loading a different Genesis .CR2 over the one whose UVs you want to change out (my current preferred way to UV-switch in Poser - because it's built-in!). It would take an awful lot of effort, I suspect, to create the kind of injection capability that V4 et al used so that most shapes that can work, would.
All of this extra work would need to be paid for - and my guess is that, on top of the existing Genesis and DS4 development costs, DAZ aren't certain that the buying Poser public would be willing to pay enough for that work to be worth it.
I don't say it wouldn't - and I don't say it would. But I think DAZ would need to be pretty darned sure before they put in almost as much effort as developing Genesis in order to come up with a proper figure "system" that works as well in Poser as the marketplace would expect.
By doing it as an exporter - a free exporter in free software (currently) - they get around having to offer support, they get around having to meet your, my, and their own expectations of having stuff "simply work" in Poser. We export it, we are then largely responsible for how well it works, and what it does - and what it cannot do.
Frustratingly, this reluctance to either release a very limited base Genesis for Poser or to spend the extra money to develop a Poser equivalent to Genesis + Studio has resulted in most people simply imagining that Genesis is inherantly going to be rubbish in Poser. It isn't. It is FAR from as polished as v4.2 is, and by extension v4WM too. But it also still does actually have many of the benefits of Genesis - like being able to morph from M4 to a Gorilla, as per my first Genesis animation (to do which I needed IK, so I've been adding IK in for some time now). Poser users can benefit from shared clothing - a pair of jeans that fit Stephanie can also fit Mr Hyde. The potential for reduced end-user cost to achieve a given "look" is tremendous because of the "neuter" base aspect of Genesis and the huge range that it's able to morph into, even without geografting and UV switching on-the-fly. It's also a lot of fun ;)
Ahhh. Still too wordy. A summary:- IMHO, DAZ don't release a Genesis .CR2 - won't even let me release one with the tutorial - because it isn't a complete, finished, fully Poser-compatible figure. And they don't want to sell you anything that's below what they deem their minimum quality level. Fortunately, they'll sell a tutorial by me meant to make using Genesis easier, but then if an axe falls it'll be on MY neck, not theirs ;)
Cheers,
Cliff
Achieving either of those images as they are in Studio - without Poser - would have been a LOT more work for me, or would simply have produced simpler results. So far I'm the only one to have chuckled at the guys underarm hair, but a chuckle is always a good thing - and I wanted to highlight that it's not all negatives from a Poser user's perspective - Poser does actually add to Genesis too, beyond just the software's interface and renderer and beyond Studio's capabilities.
Cheers,
Cliff
PS obviously the original, much larger images are somewhat betetr quality than I'm posting here
Hope everyone is having fun, got caught up yesterday in a Poser project that required 120 mat files. Loads more to do, but back for a break!!! lol.
All the best.
