Subject: The Cost of Poser Clothing

I'm just gathering information for much later, but I'm curious to know  how much are you willing to pay for clothing for your Poser figures. Not only how high you're willing to pay, but also how low. Do you equate the price of  the clothing with quality?

I'm not looking to start selling clothing yet. I want and need to get a little better in both my modeling and rigging skills to do that. But if and when I do start selling, I'm trying to determine how much I should charge.

I've gone $25 for something totally kick ass.

$10 and under is a good chance if I think it's cool.

Supporting older figures as well as more recent ones, like the series 3 ones, will guarentte you get on my wishlist.

UTILITY. I NEVER do NVITWAS. So lacey strappy things will be ignored. As will swords.
Outfits I can use in lots of different situation are better than one offs.

If it's supposed to cover 90% or more of some figure... just make a stand alone figure. A 68k+ poly figure as a remote for 100K poly outfit makes no sense.

I hink I spent $20 once for an outfit for V3 but I had a special need and it was perfect.  I collect freestuff even if I need to retexture it or even map it.  I have the time but not the money.

Poser stuff has always been underpriced compared to other applications but there are good reasons for that. For me $15-18 is fair for a nice item is not a problem.  The more flexible the item is the better.

TrekkieGrrrl ( ) posted Tue, 24 September 2013 at 7:32 PM

I rarely go above $15 for outfits. They must be very special or be something I couldn't possibly live without. around $8 and I buy it pretty much just because I like the look of it. Above that, I'll have to argue with myself of whether I really NEED this or not.

And of course, it must be for a character I actually use. And sorry, but I'm not (yet) a big fan og Rex and Roxy. Now.. something for the G2 males (Simon/James/Koji/Kelvin) and ther's a good chance I'll grab it :) But probably as about the only person here L

Don't be sorry. You actually bring up a legitimate concern that I've had.  I'm making Poser clothing for several reasons, and of course they're all free. My concern though is what if they weren't free? Would people still be willing to buy them if they were  on sale, and at what price would it be too much for someone to shell out the money?

I'll spend a reasonable amount on something I need. Usually that will be something well-modelled that I can't do myself, like Swidhelm's Milanese Armour or Xurge's Sci-fi suits. I'm prepared to spend quite a bit on well made armour - as long as it's not too fantasy to be any use. Will happily spend in the 30-40 dollar range for something good.

Other than that I buy some fantasy-type and historical clothes at lower prices, mainly so I can convert them for other characters. I don't usually buy any everyday-type clothing as I rarely use it and if I do it's easy to make dynamic versions myself. The same goes for some fantasy items, if I can make a dynamic equivalent I'm never going to buy it.

I don't always equate the price with the quality. Although most of the very good quality items I've bought have had higher prices.

I prefer spending $2 to $3 for any poser content, so I buy my items at sale moments, like real deals sales, first friday bazaar and in the past at the platinum club, becoming a member for one month and buy every piece of clothing I do like. That's the way I do it and to me that's what it's worth, unless it's a huge pack of items, then I'm prepared to pay more, but it needs to have value for me. For collections I do pay at the most $10, depending on what's in them.

As a vendor, I do sell my items at the same price I do want to buy them. At CP most of my items are priced $2.49 (some more) and are always on sale for $1.99. I don't expect others to pay more for content then I would want to pay for it. Here at Rendo my prices are higher, due to store policy, but to get around it, I do create large collections, sold at the lowest possible price, so you still get good value for money.

Personally, I don't buy here often, the prices are just to high due to Rendo controlling them. Most of the items I need here, I try to trade and if I can't trade them I wait for them to become clearance ro participate in a special sale, but most of the time I just pass and look for cheaper alternatives.

I'm a small vendor, but I've survived for many years now, making a very steady income through content each year. Opposed to most small vendors (and even big vendors), I'm very pleased with the amount my content generates each month. Lately we've seen vendors quit, they cannot survive, but perhaps they should sart adapting a different policy then continually raising prices in order to survive. In a time of crisis, that's the way to kill your own business. I've seen no effect on my sales due to any crises, on the contrary, my sales continue to climb and I'm very happy and grateful for that, thanking my customers and the Lord God Almighty for such blessings in hard times :-)

And maybe that's the difference with me. I'm in this for a hobby not a living. That's why I can create all those freebies I've done so far. So if I start selling things it would definitely be only as a way to generate some extra cash. Maybe to pay for my internet access every month.

I understand, then price it for what you think it's worth :-) People say they are willing to pay X amount, but that depends on what they have in mind. You should put up an example and then ask. Always keep in mind that most people who buy never come here, so you will never get a good idea what people are willing to pay.

If you start selling here, then Rendo will set a minimum price for your product, depending on what category your product is in. They want equality in their prices, no competition, it's to protect their larger vendors. Let's say you create trousers for M4 and I create trousers for M4 as well. Yours are plain and simple, mine are very detailed and complex. Rendo says it's trousers so the price is $9.99 (not what it would be really, but just for the example). My trousers may be worth $9.99, but yours aren't, they should have a lower price. But because they are trousers, the $9.99 is the minimum price. Mine will sell great, yours won't. So before starting to sell content, you need to consider that and be aware that the major stores, Rendo, RDNA and Daz control the prices set, not the vendor, you don't have that freedom at all. If they think it's to low or to high they will alter the price. Not so that you can sell more, but in order to protect their larger vendors, otherwise the competition would kill them. That is a huge problem for the starting vendor trying to break into the market. Keep this in mind if you think of selling your stuff.

Good luck with it!

Hmm, that kinda puts Rendo in the same class as DAZ for me then from a vendors viewpoint. It's hard enough to make it on your own  in the open marketplace without the brokerage houses rigging the system against you.

On the other hand, CP's download policy just bugs the crap out of me. I can't count the number of times I've had to go back to both Rendo and DAZ to re-download something I've bought there. Can't do that at CP.

aeilkema ( ) posted Thu, 26 September 2013 at 9:28 AM

I know the problem with CP, but I guess most people that buy there are used to it and back up all their stuff :-)

All I can say in all honesty is that I made as much at CP last month as I've made here for a whole year..... keeping in mind that these are the slow months. CP leaves me free to determine my own prices and for me that works. Every month one or more items I have are top selling at CP. Rendo controlling prices is killing my business here, as well as many others and there is no real reason to control prices. They never used to do that, but top vendors are loosing business due to their high prices and instead of lowering prices in a bad economy, we're all forced to raise our prices to match these top sellers ridiculous prices.

Also keep in mind you don't have to sell exlusively here. Rendo gives you the choice to sell your items exclusivel or non-exclusive. If you sell exlusive, you get a higher margin and other benefits, but choosing non-exlusive allows you to sell at other places. RDNA and DAZ only do exclusive and are way more controlling in lot's of aspects then Rendo is. When I started out I had a store here and at CP. I always sold well at CP and when I started out I sold here fine too, at that time Rendo didn't control the prices. After being vendor for a while RDNA invited me to come over and join them. I did so for 6 months or so.... should have never done that. Lot's of control and requirements and it almost killed my business and I was at the point of stopping as a vendor. I left, moved all my items over to CP and Rendo and my sales did well again. Then Rendo started to enforce all kinds of things upon vendors as well and my sales started some issues happened and I closed my store here for 2 years. In those 2 years a small number of customers begged me to go back here, they refused to buy at CP. In the end I re-opened my store here and was faced with the new pricing policy (and many others). For customers sake I keep my store here open, but my sales here are nothing compared to what they used to be when I could set the prices. I know it's the same for others and some have left already and some didn't sell anymore seeing all of their items disappear from the store, being forced to stop as a vendor. I'm sure at some point in time all my store items will be moved to clearance and removed from the store and lost to the Rendo customer for ever. It's the way policy is now and it's sad to see many great items being removed from the store in favor of many not so great, but more popular items.

Well, that's live these days for vendors. So, sell here non-exlusive and sell at other places who allow that as well, don't go exclusive in the beginning, but spread your chances a bit and you can always go exclusive if your items seem to be selling well at a particular place.

Well, CP seems to be the store that I would get more business at anyway considering  that I like specializing with the native Poser figures.

I don't have a problem buying things at CP. Except for that crappy download policy I think they're a great store and I can often find things there that I can't at other stores.

What months are the slow months for CGI ?

What months are the bussy months for CGI ?

Does CGI sell a lot at xmas ?

I would have guessed online stores like Walmart . Jan ,Feb are slow months
Cause the real life store is so dead in Jan ,Feb no mile long waiting lines.

Guess there's a lot of factors about supporting yourself with CGI Sells.

What Country ya line in.
In U.S. It cost a lot more to live in big cities then in the country.
Guess all Countrys would be the same.

If ya got a wife and kids to support.

I would see some thing for sell and then see a few renders with the stuff in it.
I just never saw how venders made any money .

Slower months are normally in the summer June-September and after that sales start picking up again with November, December and January being the best months. Some do see a decline of sales starting the end of February through to the end of March.

Around thanksgiving and around christmas and the new year sales are doing well, everyone spending their gift money, end of year bonus and so.

Sales.... that depends on the store. At CP you can have a sale and it can be a month long, but after that you have to wait 5 days to start a new sale. You cannot sell an item for less then $1.99 at CP. At RDNA sales are pretty much controlled by the store owners, I'd say the same of DAZ, but I'm not sure. RDNA gives you a good initial sale period, after that it's hard to get your items on sale, except for their once a year sales. DAZ has many more sales during the year. At Rendo you can set your own sales any time you like, you could run back to back sales (but you may be contacted about that by the staff, not sure never tried it). You can set it to a certain percentage off (it's not too much) and you cannot sell below a certain price. Rendo does run various special sales with a higher sale percentage, but your items need to meet the conditions. So far, after all these years my items have met these conditions 3-4 times, the rest has either been denied or I knew beforehand I didn't meet the conditions.

As for renders reflecting sales..... I've been a vendor for many years now and so far, during all these years, I've seen about 20 renders with my stuff in it, not many more for sure. Last month I sold about 50 items and around 50 freebies were downloaded. I've sold thousands of items with content, but only seen about 20 renders with my content so far.

OK say I sold 50 ideams for $10.00 thats $500.00.
50% goes to the store 50% goes to me.
So I get $250.00 a month.
I live in U.S. out in the country.I need at the very least $1500.00 a month just for bills.
So I would need 300 sells every month all 12 of them just to pay bills with.
Not counting food or any spending money.
So all things condered ,guess I would need 500 sells evey month just to have a life.
Don't think anyone in the U.S. could survive just as a CGI Vender.

Wounder what they do with the content they buy ,

You're right and most vendors can't live from it, they do it as an extra. I've got a steady income as well from a part-time job. The money I make from my content is an extra for me. From it I buy new hardware, software and all of the content I do buy myself for Vue and sometimes Poser (if I can trade it). At one point, before the crisis I had the idea of making a living from it, giving up my job and live from my 3D creations. I was getting closer and closer, but never completely made it to that point. Then the crisis set in and now I'm glad I never took the step.

I'm not a top seller, but from what I gather, I'm not doing too bad either, I'm somewhere in the middle. I still sell enough..... to give you an idea of how much it is here's all the fun stuff I got from it this year up to now :-) Vue Studio with 2 extra modules (export and ecopainter). A new computer for rendering (i7 3770, the 4770 series wasn't released at that time). Between $10 and $50 worth of content each month. Some gadgets and other items bought at Ebay, Deal Extreme and so on. I've got some money left, didn't even spent it all. I may not get rich, but it sure pays for some nice stuff I never would have bought otherwise. Besides all that I buy from the content sales, I also give away around 10% of what I make to a charity, each year and I can tell you that's not a few dollars. This is only from my CP sales, what I sell at Rendo comes on top of this, that I spent on other things.

So, if you've got some stuff to sell go for it. Don't expect to get rich, but it may pay some bills. Don't quit your day job if you've got one, but if you model, take a little extra time to get it into a store. You never know what may happen. I started selling for fun, after a few months started contemplating become a vendor full time, but in the end decide to not take the step, but use the money to invest in my expensive hobby. This way my wife is happy, I'm not using household money at all.

Isn't a lot of that determined by what you make and for whom it's made? After all, Poser clothing ffor the native folks probably sells no where near what an item for V4 or Dawn does. On the other hand props are locked into a particular software format like the figures and clothing are either.

aeilkema ( ) posted Fri, 27 September 2013 at 4:28 AM

Yes and no. You make items for figures that everyone is making items for, but then you as a new vendor, have to go up against the established vendors. in theory items for popular figures sell well, but you have to share the cake with everyone. You can also try to find a niche and have a cake for yourself, but it may not be a large one. In the end it works out about the same. In general, for a new vendor it doesn't matter what. You either have a limited group of customers that want your items or you have share the market with lots of vendors trying to sell for the same figure(s) as you do.

Most of the well known vendors have developed a certain style that appeals to a broad audience and makes their stuff stand out from the rest. If you can manage that and spent lots of time on it, you could do well.

Props is different, people like cool props even if they have no use for it. Props are in general not related to a certain figure. There are quite some vendors who make props that hardly anyone buys and there are props that seem to appeal to everyone.

For me it's simple, I started creating props I needed for my own projects and made it all the way I like it, in my style. After posting some of my own renders, I did some questions about them, where did you get those props, can we get them too? So I opened a store and added one item to my store and I sold a hundred copies in a few days. That's how it all started. Since then, I have released lots of items in the same style and quite some people seem to like it.

What you have to keep in mind that when time progresses and you don't give up, you will build quite a catalog of content in your store. Even if you don't add anything new, the store will still keep on generating sales from the catalog you already have. In the beginning I tried to release at least one new item each month. Now, I'm only adding a new item every 3-4 months due to other things getting in the way of modeling, but my store still runs well.

I move from props to clothing once in a while, but creating clothes is a lot more work and for me it doesn't pay off. They sell, but not as good as the props, so by now I'm creating packs with props and clothing and they sell a lot better.

If you already have some stuff, just add it to a store at a price you yourself would buy it for and just see what happens..... :-)

About the only reason I would have to buy content ,Is to post Renders.

Since they don't post Renders ,What are they doing with all that content ?

There are tens of thousands of poser users and most of them never post renders at all. I hardly ever post Poser renders, but it is used often. I do create comics hand outs for our church, one of my comics has been distributed to almost 10,000 people..... but you will never see me post a render of it here. I do suspect that there are many people like me, using Poser in all kinds of ways, but never post any renders online. My work is seen by plenty of people, but just not online. I never buy content just to be able to post a render, there are so many things you can use Poser for, not just for posting renders online.

The only renders I post are Vue renders in order to get feedback and suggestions, a lot of my Vue renders I never post at all, they are for other uses.

Not all of us live online :-)

Due to the childish TOS changes, I'm not allowed to link to my other products outside of Rendo anymore :(

Food for thought.....

I do have an online comic myself, two in fact, although I never get to work on them anymore because of all the modeling I do now, and except for doing promos and WIP renders I don't really post on line either. I do like to collect a lot of stuff though because you never know when you'll need it.

Just checked with CP about selling and they're not taking new sellers at this time. Of course, I wasn't planning to sell at this time anyway.

Oh, that's interest that they don't take new sellers, haven't heard that before. I hope that's not pointing out unpleasant changes.

I'm guessing any changes at CP will turn out to be good, not bad. ;)

DAZ3D, Renderosity & RuntimeDNA are choosy about adding new vendors to varying degrees. CP has a ton of vendors already; no surprise that they're throttling back for a while.

CO hasn't been taking new vendors for quite a while, probably over a year now so I wouldn't worry about any sudden changes.

Does anyone know if you have to be a vendor at CP to give out freebies there? I guess you would though, huh?

Yeah, you have to be a vendor.

On the bright side, I think having your free stuff over at ShareCG gets you more publicity anyway. ;)
