Subject: Using DSON and G2 In Poser

AetherDream ( ) posted Tue, 26 May 2015 at 10:20 AM · edited Sat, 04 January 2025 at 2:06 AM

I have been using Genesis 2 in DS for a while now, I don't have a problem with DS, but my preference is Poser for lighting, scene setup and rendering. When DSON first came out quite awhile back, I really had trouble with it. I cannot be sure if it was just the fact that I was operating with the earliest version or if my computer was not up to it, but it seemed to not want to work for me. I am now re-considering DSON. Can anyone share their successful use of DSON and how Poser 10 handles it. I know there are many people who have had negative experiences with DSON, please do not repeat the many arguments against it. I am looking for constructive commentaries from people who actively use DSON. If possible could you share some of your computer specs such as video card, ram and processor, and operating system. Also, I would like to see some renders if anyone cares to share. Many thanks.

I have DSON installed into PP2014 under Win 8.1, i3-4130 CPU@ 3.4 GHz, 8 GB RAM upgradeable to 16 GB.  I haven't had any problems with importing and manipulating Genesis 2 in Poser.  The two guidelines I follow are: run the Library as a separate panel as set in General Preferences and turn off subdivision immediately after importing.  I usually run EZSkin 2 to replace and prep the figure textures for IDL rendering.

This is a test render of G2F with DS body morphs applied and V4 skin texture converted to G2F using Texture Transformer.  One light and BB's Environment Sphere, IDL render.  Nothing fancy, just wanted to see the texture application and fit.  Texture enhanced with EZSkin 2.

It works OK, although posing can sometimes be slow.  I have an 6-core AMD Phenom II at 3.2 GHZ and 16 GB of RAM. EDIT my video is an AMD 5570 with 2 GB.

Here is Darius with EZSkin applied...

Thank you so much for sharing your specs and your renders. It's possible that part of the problem was due to my computer specs at the time which were considerably below those that have been posted. I noticed that she is easy to morph in DS using her dials/sliders. When you bring her over, do her morphs work fine in Poser?

WandW ( ) posted Tue, 26 May 2015 at 1:17 PM

Yes, morphs work fine.  The only difference that I note is that tight fitting clothes such as tights or stockings sometimes have a bit of poke-thru at the joints in Poser.  Richard Haseltine says this is because the DSON Importer does not yet support Studio's Smoothing Modifier.  Using the Fit To feature of the Poser 10/+ morph brush fixes it for me if needed...

I use Poser 10 on a 27" iMac with 8 GB of memory, a 3.2 GHz Intel Core i5, and the NVIDIA GeForce GT 755m 1024 MB video card. I find DSON works OK. You have to, as mentioned, turn sub divisions off. I can do a high quality render with a single Genesis 2 figure dressed and with props. I can do scenes with a single Genesis 2 figure and two M4/V4 figures by not using SSS, ray tracing, or casting shadows. I can use all those things in most cases with three M4/V4 figures, so I deduce that Genesis 2 uses more memory. Having DSON in play seems to lead to more frequent crashes during rendering, but that's not a consistent issue. I find that I have frequent difficulty opening a saved scene with a Genesis 2 figure in it, but if I import it into a new scene, DSON usually works OK.  The next time there is a Poser Pro sale, I may buy it to find out whether the 32 bit memory limit plays a role. For me, the bottom line is that DSON is good enough to use, and the other things I prefer about Poser make it worth not using DAZ figures in their native environment. I hope that helps.

I have Windows 8.1 Lenovo 1TB x64 bit operating system desktop with 6GB memory and AMD A6-6310 GPU with Radeon R4 Graphics. Not sure if that is good or not but I don't have any trouble using Genesis 1 or 2 in Poser 10.

I haven't any issues with G2 in Poser Pro 2014, other than the fact that geografting doesn't work (unless you don't use any morphs that affect the shape/size of the body part that has the attachment). Figure and clothing works very well.

AMD Phenom(tm) II X6 1090T Processor 3.20 GHz
8.00 GB RAM
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
EVGA Nvidia GTX 760 (4GB)

Another thing that happens with clothing is that the morphs get out of sync, in which case there is a provided Python script called "transfer active morphs". This script is automatically installed alongside the DSON Importer, and is available directly from the script menu in the DSON Support submenu.

Have you tried using the Scripts>DSON Support>Transfer Active Morphs command when morphing a figure with GeoGrafts?

Yes I have. I've tried many things, and none of them actually work. I can get it close, but the geografted part always looks like it's a separate mesh, rather than seamlessly connected to the main figure. It would be so awesome if geografting worked in Poser, because otherwise Genesis 2 is practically flawless. It would also be nice if an option to never display the cage could be added simultaneously with any such geografting fix, as I prefer to use Poser's advanced opengl display in lieu of rendering, and the cage is quite ugly in this respect.

hborre ( ) posted Sat, 30 May 2015 at 4:18 PM

IIRC, the genitalia is GeoGrafted and had always given me a terrible time in Poser.  Until recently, I discovered that loaded those parts first, then the figure, and using the Transfer Active Morph, the model responded correctly.

Is there a visual (illustrated) step by step guide to using DSON importer?  I've been Exporting models from DAZ.  This has worked well for me except with the DAZ Horse 2.  I'd like to get that Horse into Poser. I'd much prefer a static guide to a video.  Thanks!

quietrob: I'm with you ... I really need a step-by-step guide on using DSON for the first time.  I have DS4.8 and PP2014 with DSON installed.  That's as far as I've got.  :) Anyone's help is greatly appreciated as I cannot find working links at DAZ.

UPDATE: I have the Genesis figure loaded.  Female.  Looks nice, like the face.  ah, but no shaping mprphs.  transfer morph ... from DSON menu did nothing.  Advice for the newbie?

Yes.  I do. I have to ask first, did you have the dim install the Genesis starter essentials?  Here is something that I didn't know.  What that does is create a runtime JUST FOR POSER!  That is where all the morphs, poses et al are located. The runtime is called My Daz 3D library.  You have to manually add the runtime.  When you do all the stuff you told the DIM (Daz Install Manager) to download into Poser will show up.

Boni ( ) posted Wed, 17 June 2015 at 10:20 PM

Got the right runtime ... My Daz Library, I will have to look again tomorrow when I have my computer up. I know I probably just overlooked something. Onward and forward.

Let me know if you need more help.  I had some very patient people helping me.  I guarantee that we can get it up and running.  I even my make own Poser Companion Files so I can bring in certain props.  Still, it's always easier and better if the author provides the files.

Boni ( ) posted Thu, 18 June 2015 at 6:48 AM

I found all the movement morphs ... and that is exciting.  Now ... about the shaping morphs.  Do they transfer to Poser as well? If so ... have I missed something? Thank you quietrob.  I appreciate your patience.

Most, if not all, shaping morphs will appear in Properties/Parameter panel.  Because of it's extensive hierarchy, it will take time to get accustomed to where all those morphs are located.  Generally, everything should appear when you select the figure's body.

Boni ( ) posted Thu, 18 June 2015 at 8:47 AM

Hmmm.  No, no real shaping morphs beyond body types.  No face sculpturing.  Just opening/closing eyes and positioning lids and eyes ... expressions are good, excellent.  But not shaping of eyes, nose etc.  all work for subtle expression but not sculpting.  Is there something I may have forgotten to install?

Though it was written before Install Manager. If you are going to install with Install Manager, just make sure you tell Install Manager where Poser is located, using the settings menu, before installing the DSON importer for Poser.  http://docs.daz3d.com/doku.php/public/software/dson_importer/poser/userguide/getting_started/start

Byrdie ( ) posted Thu, 18 June 2015 at 2:10 PM

There are head and body morph sets for the Genesis base figures that are roughly equivalent to the old Morphs++ ones for M4 & V4. They're sold separately but you need them too. Watch for them to go on sale, there's also the DieTrying morph packs for free over at sharecg which will give you plenty of extra shapes to work with.

Ah ... for those interested.  Here is what I have discovered.  Pose and Shape are different tabs within DS and since Poser doesn't distinguish the "shapes" don't transfer to Poser.  That's fine.  As long as I know.

In Poser they are all on the same Parameters tab, but they are all there.

I am working on a series of tutorials (step by step, with pictures) on bringing DS content into Poser - with DSON, without DSON, figures, props, hair, etc.  I am also covering how to bring order to that abortion that DS uses in place of a runtime. I can't give specifics until I get back from my mother's house (conducting annual "Harry Do" list), next weekend.

It isn't difficult to get DS content running as Poser native content (and dropping DSON altogether).  It is tedious, however - which is why I am developing a series of checklists.

quietrob ( ) posted Fri, 19 June 2015 at 4:57 PM

I look forward to that tutorial.  From what I've read in the different forums, it isn't that difficult but it does take a little time for the Content Creator to make the proper files to ease use for Poser users.  Some say it isn't cost effective.  A pity for there is still a HUGE amount of Poser users.   I'm thankful for those that provide support and will shop their items and often pass on other models that strike my interest or look promising because it would be almost impossible to get some items into Poser.  Generally these items are props.  I can understand Genesis items taking more time but a prop?  That can be done though you might take a hit on materials.  That said, DAZ has made a way for us to use Genesis and import or export content between the two programs.  I can only hope the next iteration of Poser makes this process even easier.

Good luck with that Harry Do list!  Mom and Dad.  You just gotta love 'em!

ssgbryan ( ) posted Sat, 20 June 2015 at 9:11 PM

Doesn't take that much time.  Not to mention that at least 1 vendor's PCFs are actual honest-to-God Poser files, as opposed to the usual .duf files masquading as Poser files - so that can certainly be done.

No way you're getting off that easy!  Let's see your test render!

Anyway, I'm glad you solved your Genesis/DSON/Poser problems.  I had to resolve mine today after moving ALL of my content over to an external drive.

Well, here is my test render.  Genesis (1), various morphs, but couldn't get the clothes to conform, so ... I used the "bodyuit" texture with Jeremy and leatherized it with EZmat.  DM's Alina's Place for the set, Fredel's Beauty dish for IDL light (sold at YURdigital) and NO standard Poser lights at all.  GC lowered slightly, SSS on figure.  A human/alien combo. :)

file_2723d092b63885e0d7c260cc007e8b9d.jpA few small boo-boos, forgot the change the text. of the nipples and that left pinky looks like it hurts.  But otherwise I like the test. :)

That is amazing work!  The leathery yet pure texture of the skin, a wise face that knows more than us simple humans.  The darkness hides your boo-boos.  If'n you hadna told me I wouldn't have known.  I love DAZ models but Poser is still the way for me.  Nice job Boni.  It looks like your Poser and Genesis 2 problems are in the past.

The way I did it the clothes is to conform them to the figure using DAZ autofit, then export them as a CR2.  I didn't use the importer until recently so I didn't know any other way but the clothes conformed in Poser.  I don't know if it will work for you but it worked for me.

Boni ( ) posted Tue, 23 June 2015 at 6:30 AM

thank you! I still have trouble with Genesis 2, this was genesis one I believe.  I used the 3rd party morphs and I think that is why the clothes wouldn't morph even after I copied morphs over from the base figure (but this was in Poser and you can't expect Everything to work with an imported format).  I really enjoyed doing this and that is a nice description you gave of the image.  Again Thank you.
