Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 28 11:20 am)
Yep... I'm more interested in the upgrade path... I foolishly bought a P4 upgrade(magazine P3 offer) for me laptop last week! Arggee! I really hope it's at least another 6 months so I can save up!! ducks Seriously, though, if the upgrade is $99 they will have absolutely humongous sales immediately on release. 'cos EVERYONE is going to want it... what a fantastic insight we've had from CL this week!! I just hope they have a seriously high volume CD pressing order placed. LOL H:)
Re: Poser 5 by kupa on 2/7/02 19:45 Odd dynamics... If I say anything about this future feature or that, I get accused of teasing, if I don't say anything I get accused of playing games ;-) I can't go into specific details about the next release. Sorry about that. We're still selling Poser 4. There will be a Poser 5, we're hard at work on it, and there still is a lot of work to be done. It will be priced in a Poser price range, and it will be very, very powerful. It's going to be the most significant feature upgrade of Poser to date. That said, those who have Poser 4 today will be better off $-wise when it comes time to upgrade, and it still makes sense to upgrade to 4 if you haven't already. Here's the little bit of detail I'm able to share- new features to include- * dynamic strand based hair * dynamic cloth with physics * a renderman compliant renderer and raytracer engine * tree and shader node based material editor with procedural shaders * facial photo mapping technology * morph target sculpting * non linear animation * new content I think is is about a deep a peak as can i share at this time. Sorry, but no delivery timelines for now. Steve Cooper Curious Labs
Sounds like they're planning a two-tiered upgrade pricing, one for Poser 4 owners and one for Poser3 (and earlier?). So folks who have just upgraded will make up part of the P4 cost. Plus, their transition to P5 will likely benefit from several months of P4 experience, which can teach you a lot. Bet they won't regret moving to P4 now :-) Elisa
Saw this and wanted to post a quick update, the renderer is a little different than planned at the time of these informal details. More accurately it would unofficialy be referred to a "micro polygon renderer", similar to rndrman, and similar to reyes, we'll have more details later. Otherwise, those words from last February still seem to stand up fairly well. I'm almost proud of myself... ;) One last little bit, customers with both Poser 4 and Pro Pack will get the best upgrade pricing. Kupa
I think high pricing on Poser 5 would devastate this online community. I get the impression that over 90% of Poser users here are hobbiests, not doing commercial work and not profiting off their 3D work. In other words, Poser's primary function is (like it or not) as a toy. My hope is that Curious Labs understands that this is not a bad thing. The current setup of inexpensive application + expensive "Pro Pack" is pretty ideal for them. They make the software accessible to the hobbiest masses developing a huge user base. Hobbiest sales is their really money maker, and then on top of that they get the respect and extra bucks from having "pro" options for commercial work with Poser. I want to see Poser 5.0 stay at $200, with a $100 upgrade from 4.0. This will generate large volume sales liek Eovia is currently seeing with carrara 2, and it will more importantly keep the Poser Online Community going. I think any price tag much over $200 would have the opposite effect; it would alienate and begrudge a lot of loyal Poser hobbiests who just cannot justify paying adobe type prices to render nude fairies ;-P My fingers are crossed that Curious Labs market research agrees with me... -Adam
EricofSD, reread post 12 from Kupa.
I added ProPack a few months ago "on faith" and it looks like it will pay off.
Of course, now people will start inferring that P5 is a combination of the two. But then again, he didn't say that a ProPack upgrade wasn't also on it's way, but then again, he didn't say that he wouldn't need me to be a Mac beta tester either.
Ah, the things he didn't say.
Hmmm, there's a song in that somewhere.
Before they made me they broke the mold!

Obviously any current Poser user is looking for the upgrade price, and not the "new" price for those who don't currently own Poser. Curious Labs is smart and receptive enough to offer an upgrade price. As it stands now the $99 upgrade price is the same from all versions of Poser, including version 1. If the new upgrade price gets over $100, then it will become more and more impossible for me. I'm sure others feel the same. *** "This message states My Not So Humble Opinion. If you're counting on a $100 upgrade price from P4->P5, I think you're at least $80 off (and probably more than that). Kupa says above that Pro Pack users will get the best upgrade pricing (implying that there's no more Pro pack, they will be combined in P5), so you can start with the $150 upgrade price for that. They're not going to just 'give' it to Pro Pack users, so I figure at a bare minimum, you can add another $30-$50, making the P5 full package price a minimum of $400-$420 range. Of course they may have a different (higher) target price for the full package, but based on what's been shown and said, I don't see it being any lower (I'd love to be proven wrong, without screwing Pro Pck owners though). Of course this is Pure Speculation on my part, so it's up to you to decide if my reasoning is sound ;).

Well, I'm reassured by his comment that it will be 'in a poser price range.' And I'm happy to hear about preferential pricing for P$ & Propack users, as I only recently bought both! (s) Mind you - I think I'm probably going to stop buying any more 3D stuff and save my pennies until I get a final price... I wonder how many other poverty-stricken poser addicts will do the same? Weird, I just got an e-bot saying there was a response by EricofSD with the title of "What about a PoserPro Upgrade" and it brought me here. I wonder if it took me to the wrong thread. shrug Anyway, on that note, I would have to assume that ProPack will be melded into Poser, wouldn't you think? I've always believed that ProPack was an interim until P5 was out. I would think that P5 would render ProPack unnecessary. Why have two programs when you can have just one that does it all? And also on that note and this thread, I hope that consolidating Poser and ProPack into one program wouldn't affect the pricing any. I'm also one of those poverty stricken Poser users. I have to watch my pennies, too. I live on a clerical staff wage and I don't have a nest-egg lying around to dip into for things like this. Please, please, CL, be gentle with us with the pricing. Melanie
Cool! I have P4 and Propack! I knew it would pay off! Come on 5 get here soon ;)

They won't sell many at those prices. I really doubt they would do that to us. It would be a slap in the face. I'm sure they won't get that drastic. They wouldn't be doing themselves any favors if they did that. This community would put up an outcry like nobody's ever heard before. They would go under really fast. I sure won't buy if they go that high. I can live without it. I'll just make do with P4. I just plain don't have that kind of money. I have too many other real-life debts to pay for before any of my hobbies. Melanie
My guess on the upgrade price from P4: I think it would be too optimistic to expect anything below $150. I guess it depends on how many copies of ProPack CL has sold. If they sold not too many of them, then we may hope in a $100 upgrade price for Pro Pack. If they sold many copies of Pro Pack, then we shouldn't expect the ProPack upgrade to be less than $150. With such premises, I would expect one of these two guesses: guess 1 propack upgrade $100 poser4 upgrade $200 guess 2 propack upgrade $150 poser4 upgrade $250 Considering that there'll be VAT (20% for me here) to be added to the price, I really hope that it'll be guess 1, otherwise I would risk to be left out of the Poser 5 wave. So to summarize: $200 would be at the same time a realistic upgrade price and a not-too-disastrous one for most P4 customers; I vote for this one ;-) $250 is (I'm afraid) the most probable guess, but I think that this price + taxes will begin to leave out a non indifferent part of low-budget Poser users $300 would be a major catastrophe (at least for me).
For an upgrade??? I'll pass. I can live with P4. I have for how many years now? I refuse to pay that much money for an upgrade. I don't even have that much. Most of my credit cards are close to maxing out. If I don't have the money, I simply can't buy, and CL needs to know that this is probably the case with a lot of Poser 4 users. They won't make many sales. I consider that price gouging. Melanie
Melanie just look at how much they priced the pro pack. That was probably a bad strategic move on CL part, but what about those propack users now - they would expect to have at least $100 advantage on the upgrade over normal Poser4 users like you and me, since the Poser 5 is (apparently) going to include everything that was in propack. If you consider this, and the fact that surely CL won't give away Poser 5 for free to propack users, you'll see that the price estimate I made sounds not only realistic but somewhat unavoidable - unfortunately.

We all need to know is this going to Raise the price of Poser? We just need a rough estimate between$200.00to $600.00 or the way above $600.00 to over a thousand????
