Subject: Who has used my models in pictures?

A lot of people download my models, and some people praise them; but when will I see a few pictures using any of them? The latest gallery image that I found with anything of mine in, is my dumper wheel in a junkyard scene at this link, entered on 9 May 2002.

x2000 ( ) posted Tue, 24 September 2002 at 12:41 PM

Funny, isn't it? I've had close to 1000 downloads of my Renderosibee character and I still only see pics by the same half-dozen or so people (in the Magazine Interact forum, if anyone's curious)! BTW Anthony, check out my avatar over at www.poserpros.com for a familiar face...;)

Recycling into Renderosity isn't necessarily the only sign that a product is serving a good purpose. Consider: I got the Bee, and posted exactly one image using him in a scene. For completely unknown reasons, the Bee inspired me to make a hive and a car for him, which I posted and nobody used. But in the process of making those two items, I finally mastered more of Amapi. (It was just too unpleasant to learn under the sign of seriousness.) In turn, that increased learning led to a -significant- improvement in the graphics I produce for serious work! Good products can start a chain of good things, which doesn't always have obvious echoes.

Cool.:) Ironically, R-bee was created in Amapi, too. I love Amapi!

sirkrite ( ) posted Tue, 24 September 2002 at 1:18 PM

ockham, if you believe in that, then good for you. Personally, I believe that 80% of downloads are by people who dont even have Poser. Theyre just compulsive down loaders, that go around and download anything they can get for free until there hard drives are full. Then they dump everything and start all over again. ;)

x2000 ( ) posted Tue, 24 September 2002 at 1:20 PM

I do know of at least one person who's publicly admitted to downloading EVERYTHING, here and at a couple other sites, as well. Now that's just wrong...

sturkwurk ( ) posted Tue, 24 September 2002 at 1:29 PM

Tell me about it... I saw several gigs a day get drained from the old 3dCC site... literally millions of hits and downloads... and yet, I see relatively few renders.

I came, I rendered, I'm still broke.

Nance ( ) posted Tue, 24 September 2002 at 1:32 PM

I've used several of your diving gear models over the years, but I just rarely post any of my stuff. Belated & feeble thanks anyway - it is appreciated.

Penguinisto ( ) posted Tue, 24 September 2002 at 1:32 PM

You gotta look around... :) Out of cussedness, I sometimes kick a search based on my nick to see how many images pop up with my name in the credits... there's about 20 I think. OTOH, looking through the images, a lot of the PT Milgirl images have my bathing suit on 'em, and my wee little Moon backgrounds have popped up a LOT in backgrounds of renders. It's cool either way, though I was suprised to find a Render of Chavez the SciFi dude up in DAZ' gallery with one of my backgrounds in it... it gave me warm fuzzy feelings to see it up there, name or no name.

Always keep an eye out at the forums. Personally, I never post anything in the gallery. But I have done quite a few bits in the forums, humor stuff. I've used a few characters from 3DCC in my little restaurant bit I was doing for a while, where Superman was a register jockey dealing with customers like Dr. Doom and the Hulk. You never know who or what is going to pop up in my work. In fact, I just remembered that the first pic in the first part of my "Art Trek 3" trilogy featured a dancing, uh, girl who may be relevant to this thread...;)

herr67 ( ) posted Tue, 24 September 2002 at 3:35 PM

I liked your 'old type aqualungs' and made it to fit Vicky, then DAZ came out with their scuba stuff. So now I have a composite of yours and DAZ scuba tank. I like the simple stuff, DAZs is too cluttered.

Anthony Appleyard ( ) posted Tue, 24 September 2002 at 3:52 PM

What sort of file size is the Daz scuba gear? I once downloaded a .PP2 German helmet which was over 5 megabytes!! Most of the file bulk was in four metal eyelets and particularly in the rim beading!!!! It was one layer of polygons without a separate inside. I made a German helmet in 1352 faces = 127 Kbytes, and that includes full texture mapping and an inside and an (anachronistic) riotsquad visor!! I once found a file that used half a megabyte to define such a simple shape as a baseball bat.

Anthony Appleyard ( ) posted Tue, 24 September 2002 at 3:55 PM

I see that my (and Sixpackwolf's) Grey alien has had some use. He started it and with his permission I took it over. To x2000: what do you think of my Poserpros avatar? I have recently re-uploaded my models with folder info in the zipfiles, so you can simply unzip them into the folder ...Poser4, and everything will go into the right places (or it should). To Nance: is there any chance of me seeing any of those pictures?

xoconostle ( ) posted Tue, 24 September 2002 at 4:11 PM

I hope this won't sound rude, because I don't mean it that way, but the fact that someone posts a model doesn't mean anyone owes them a showing of how it was used. It's nice when that happens, but you can't expect it. Furthermore, there are lots of people like me who post renders to other forums (or not at all) but who enjoy the forums, marketplace, and free areas of R'osity. I just don't feel a need to show off or solicit comments about my renders here. My preferred community for that is fine. I do understand your bewilderment or disappointment, though. I recently posted a picture to the Poser NG that I worked for two weeks on. I thought it was my best accomplishment yet. Not one comment. Meanwhile, others posted poorly done "1-hour wonder" nudes and got lots of appreciation. More recently, I posted something that I thought was too conventional, had flaws, and didn't take much time to do, but people liked it. Go figure! I can't believe that as many as 80% of the R'osity downloaders don't have Poser. If that's true, the world is nuttier than I thought. I admit to being a download addict, but only for stuff that's useful with software I do have, and which I'm likely to use at some point.

Ironbear ( ) posted Tue, 24 September 2002 at 4:32 PM

Hrmmm... I've used them Anthony, but not in anything I've posted yet in the galleries. Just haven't come up with a good scene needing a diver etc that I cared to post. ;]

I did notice your avatar Anthony. Pretty cool. I love that Grey Alien. That's one of my favorite playthings, along with Renderosibee and the Giger Alien (the creature from the "Alien" movies, for those who don't know). If I'm not mistaken, I think Sixpackwolf built that one, too, or at least collaborated, in which case I owe that guy a BIG thanks!;) Xoco, I don't think you're rude, and you're right. But still, it IS nice to know that someone is doing something with your hard work other than just archiving it on a CD, isn't it? I mean, when I see someone doing a Renderosibee pic, it's not an ego trip for me, but rather just the satisfaction of knowing that someone's getting a kick out of my creation. And, of course, seeing your freebies in use certainly helps encourage one to share more, doesn't it? Whereas if you never see anyone using your stuff, you have to wonder if you're just wasting your time. Or at least I do. As far as gallery pics getting comments, that's a whole other thing. If I really like a model, I'll end up using it somewhere eventually. But if I see a nice render, I may not say anything unless I really have something TO say, you know? And we all know you have to be VERY careful giving even slight constructive criticism around here...;) Not to mention that I rarely have time to spend in the gallery in the first place. I do admit to downloading a lot of stuff early on that I never ended up using and eventually deleted, but that's mostly because I ended up learning to model and would rather make stuff myself. There are still a few bits though, like the Grey Alien, that I'm not parting with.:)

Anthony Appleyard ( ) posted Tue, 24 September 2002 at 4:55 PM

Meanwhile, others posted poorly done "1-hour wonder" nudes and got lots of appreciation. That is, "tits mean hits", as someone wrote once. Always the sexy stuff gets top rating. I have noticed that my Wetsuitwoman is downloaded more than my Wetsuitman. The trouble is, I have no aptitude as a pornographer and no desire to be one. My most popular item is not a model but my RSR2OBJ utility.

Phantast ( ) posted Tue, 24 September 2002 at 5:10 PM

As has been said many times before, if you see a free item you might just conceivably want some time in the future, download it now. Otherwise it will be gone when you want it.

xoconostle ( ) posted Tue, 24 September 2002 at 5:49 PM

x2000, good rebuttal, I see your point and re-thought mine. I think that generous content providers should pat themselves on the back for being so cool. It's too bad they don't always get feedback or see results. I know I've committed to "give back" to this community as soon as I'm able ... probably not until I finish school, sigh. Anthony, I'll look for your stuff and if I can make time, will use it and try to let you know if I post it. Frankly my comments were partially to myself. I found myself feeling slightly "hurt" recently when nobody responded to some of my work, and then realized that I couldn't expect people to respond just because I post. Besides, my peers have already seen ten thousand well done dragon pix. I'm not anti-Poser-porn but find it to be mostly boring. Sure, I tried a little when I first got Poser, but ... yawn. It's just not very challenging. I do like many "pinup" renders, you know, teasing and sexy but not really porn. That's fun. When I tried some I was surprised to find that they aren't necessarily easy to do well. Most of all I like work that makes me say "wow ... imagination, talent, and hard work!" no matter what the subject. I guess next time I need an ego fix I'll do nekked Vicky inna temple, and the world will love me.

Little_Dragon ( ) posted Tue, 24 September 2002 at 6:09 PM

I'll admit to some curiousity concerning my haystack prop (my second most popular item, after the shower), but I'm not losing any sleep over it. Two hours per day is plenty, really.

Nance ( ) posted Tue, 24 September 2002 at 6:56 PM

Sent ya an IM Anthony. btw LD, I DL'd your haystack primarily because it's TMap looked handy for other uses. Bump maps for cloth wrinkles & hair & such. (Although.... there is a VanGogh ripoff that's been bouncing around in my head that would need haystacks. Just haven't gotten there yet.)

I used some in a picture last year, never posted. This week i have an idea about a picture using your models and download some of your stuff again.Thanks.But i did many pictures just for the pleasure of composing and using my soft tools. lots projecs begins but not finish( i did postwork in Painter).. not enough time ,time ...I print some, sometime i show to my family or friends ,,but long time i posted in Renderosity gallery.I think some of my picture are good, others so so but don't need to show to univers.Just pleasure of doing it ,just hobby for me.Funny because when i was a student(long time ago)i sold some drawings or oil paintings.Nothing like this for computer generated ones Excuse my bad english but the working day was hard.

creativechaos ( ) posted Tue, 24 September 2002 at 8:24 PM

Personally, I download a lot of stuff from here, and other sites, and keep it archived until I am inspired to use it. Sometimes that's a few hours, and other times it's a few months. It all depends on what my demands from work and school are, what my mood is and a lot of other variables. It's not that I don't appreciate the work that went into items (and I'm talking MP purchaces as well as freebie downloads as well here) I have stuff I've bought from weeks ago that I haven't used yet because I haven't been inspired to use it, but I bought it because I knew it would serve a purpose. :) That's just my 2 cents though (anyone got change?) lol

Penguinisto ( ) posted Tue, 24 September 2002 at 8:39 PM

...my little "Knife thrower in training" Michael render got a grand total of 88 hits before it got buried under Titty Mountain (and okay, I'm fairly guilty of nude females, even alluring ones (See the Sun Faerie WIP in the Carrara gallery ferinstance.) OTOH, reading one viewer's comment about how it creeped him out so much that he woke up in the middle of the night to comment on it... damn, that gave me a huge ego kick, and was the best comment I've ever recieved, bar none. :) You are right though - it takes no time at all to set up a a porn render with some version of what I call a "Vicky w/ Vagina" mesh. OTOH, some rare stuff over at R'otica simply blows the mind with the time and technical ability that was put into the render by the artist. Take Il Geco for instance - his women are almost always middle-aged or older women, his sense of lighting and postwork is almost always to die for, and the moods and expressions he gives them are realistic to an ungodly degree. At least, they're realistic enough to make you think they're about to turn and curse at you at any second for barging in on 'em.

dialyn ( ) posted Tue, 24 September 2002 at 8:58 PM

Frankly I get pretty excited when one of my graphics hits 100 hits. I have no idea who looks once I run out of friends, but it's nice to know that some people do (even if it's just to be kind), knowing they wouldn't find a Vicky or Mike lounging nude in one of my temples.

Anyway, I'm like other people here. I download when I see something I like because I don't know how long it will be there. Maybe someday I'll use it in a graphic. Or not. I don't download everything. I just like to have some props and textures on hand. I credit the artists when I can but some don't have any identification inside the zip file and I can't remember who or where I got what when I go to use it weeks later. Since each graphic can take up to 15 or more props and textures from different people, I don't mind crediting each and everyone on the graphic but I don't see any way I can efficiently notify everyone I downloaded stuff from. Many times I don't have a way of reaching them because (hint, hint) they don't put any identification inside their zip file. :(

I have been assuming, given my limited abilities and the modest hit rate of my graphics, that no one would be particularly flattered that I used their items in my stuff. I always acknowledge that my graphics are a collaboration rather than my own creation, but I don't know if my unknown co-conspirators really want to know to what use I put their items, and this does seem to vary wildly among you. Would you rather a 50 hit graphic done with good will but limited talent have your prop used in it, or would you rather see it in a 2000 hit Vicky in the temple? Or does it matter to you?

I am thankful to all of you who do provide the props, textures, etc. because I can't create them on my own and I am (shades of "A Streetcar Named Desire") dependent on the kindness of strangers.

Spit ( ) posted Tue, 24 September 2002 at 9:08 PM

Little Dragon...I love your haystack prop!! Just haven't had time to do a picture lately. But I don't post in the galleries here so it doesn't matter anyway I guess. LOL Just wanted you to know.

Allen9 ( ) posted Wed, 25 September 2002 at 1:32 PM

Hi LD, I downloaded your haystack too - intending to use it with a little tweaking to make thatch roofs for round huts. That project is sitting on the back burner right now. *** It's long been true around here that T&A is what gets the hits. Of course, with the advent of the Mildragon, we're starting to see fewer people complaining about the over-abundance of NVITWAS (Naked vicky in temple with a sword) as they have a new item to complain about - too many NDIACWFAOH (naked dragon in a cave with fire and/or hoard) pics. Tune in next week to see the latest item for people to bitch about. ;o) *** I know what you mean when talking about hits & comments, if I post a picture here I'm lucky to get even one comment most of the time, even if the hits go over 100. Over at 3DC it's usually about a ratio of 1 comment per 2 or 3 hits - far more encouraging.

xoconostle ( ) posted Wed, 25 September 2002 at 10:50 PM

Appreciated your comments, Penguinisto. I haven't checked 'Rotica in a long time, sounds like it's time to go back and hunt down the artful stuff. This thread is changing my mind. At the Poser newsgroup I feel lucky if three people respond. 100 hits is considered low at Rosity? Hm, maybe it's time to start posting to my empty Rosity gallery. I've only been rendering for about 7 months but am gaining some confidence. The excellent work of the more talented inspires me to aspire. I just wish there were 100 hours in a day so I could devote more time to improving! Anthony, checked your stuff. Amazing! Still working with ideas...

Allen9 ( ) posted Thu, 26 September 2002 at 1:27 PM

If you want lots of hits and very little response in the way of comments, post here. If you don't mind fewer total hits but like to get some encouraging comments, also post at 3DC. Quite a few people, myself included, post at both sites. (Of course, if you are just doing T&A, you'll get lots of hits AND comments here.)

Allen9 ( ) posted Thu, 26 September 2002 at 1:34 PM

It appears I did use your diver some time back, and when I posted the picture ("Ancient Enemy"), mistakenly attributed it to Mitch, from whom I had also downloaded quite a bit of undersea stuff around that time. I was working in my Poser folders last nite - reorganizing - and realized that the Diver is in a folder clearly labeled AA-Divers. My profuse apologies for this mistake (smacks self on forehead and repeats mantra "Duh!" several dozen times). Your divers and equipment are great. Abundant thanks for making them available, even to idiots like me.

xoconostle ( ) posted Thu, 26 September 2002 at 4:11 PM

Allen, thanks for your thoughtful suggestions! At the moment I'm so busy I can't do anything in Poser, but will certainly get more involved at 3DC in a few weeks when I can. In the meantime this community keeps me "in touch" and keeps the ideas flowing. Thanks again.

Anthony Appleyard ( ) posted Thu, 26 September 2002 at 4:16 PM

I have recently re-uploaded my models with folder info in the zipfiles, so you can unpack it into ...Poser4 in "use folder info" mode and all the contained files will go into their correct places.

I'm sorry - but as a person who downloads stuff that I might use at some stage there is this habit of Internet Sites... they disappear. One moment you book mark it and say "Okay if I need that I will go get it" the next moment you go back the site is closed down. :P So if I see something that I might use in the future I will download it (that doesn't mean I download everything or anything I find, just that if there appears to be a use, I will get it) Just look on Renderosity Free Section - go back to the beginning and find the number of stuff that is no longer around. If I had got that stuff before it disappeared then I wouldn't be frustrated now trying to find that same thing. Then there is the next one that really can hurt... You have something for free, then suddenly you feel you are going to start charging for your work, and then the piece you had for free are pulled. I know two people who have done this one, and their free items have been put on a CD, and are no longer free anymore. I'm not saying all of you may do this - but as a downloader it becomes a force of habit to get something while it is free, just incase you can't tomorrow... Though I personally try very hard to never download a whole Homepage Content. A few personal homepages have got "donations" from me when I feel I have downloaded most of their content :P (or I become close friends with them - which could be seen as a liablity to them I supppose :P lol) WiNC
