As very few people seem to be able to predict the furture I guess this theme will continue to run and run. Will it end when there is a new Poser and we find it does or does not support Genesis? For a while maybe, but then it will all start again when there is a Genesis two.
I wonder however how many people have a real choise. If Poser does support Genesis then I may give it a try but only after I have seen enough images to convince me that there is a real benefit over V4. If there is no support, the decision is made for me as I have been with Poser too long to try and learn another way of working, let alone the financial commitment have have locked up on Poser and V4. Much as I am interested in art, it is after all a hobby, not a way of life.
I have a passing interest in the future but the present is where my efforts will be focused. Now just where did a leave Vicky last time?

Thread: Poser, Nudity and Comments | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
While I have been buying from Renderosity for some time I have only recently started to upload any of my images and even more recently started to read the forums. I say that because I am only just beginning to discover some of the trends mentioned here.
One point I do not understand is the comment
"The lack of commentary can probably be explained by the fact that the vast majority of people would like to offer critical commentary on other people's images, while at the same time remaining utterly hostile to receiving any criticism themselves. The first time you get death threats for suggesting that someone turn shadows on in their renders, you give up."
I do not argue with the point but why, if they are going take criticism badly, why do such people not tick only to have favorable comments.
I have never been critical of others work as I do not think my skills are good enough to do so. I am always pleased when someone takes the time to look and leave a comment yet in the short time I have been uploading I am most pleased by other artists who have commented on how I could improve my images. It is so rare an occurance that I took the time to email them and thank them for taking the trouble on each occasion.
I have never uploaded a nekkid Vicky, yet I use Vicky a lot. I have no problem with nekkind Vicky either, it is just that I am trying to say something different with my art. I will quickly add at this point that I probably fail dismally but that is the intent and any help other artists can give me is greatfully received.

Thread: Does a faster processor make poser renders faster? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
I agree with the comments already made in this thread. Last year I built a new system to replace an old dual core PC. With Poser Pro 2010 and Windows 7 available I installed this on the new system that had a quad core CPU with hyper-threading which gives a virtual 8 threads. Running the 64bit allowed me to take the memory from 4Gig to 12.
The extra memory allowed me to render more complex scenes but the big plus for me was the speed, renders that had taken hours before were now completing in minutes rather than hours.
Of couse, as is the nature of things, I now have some renders that take hours but the scenes are more complex and results way above my earlier efforts. I did try one such scene of my old system to see how long it would take, expecting it to take days, but the system would crash (probably due to lack on memory) very early during the render.

Thread: The Poser Face Room | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
"I would have to disagree with the Faceshop Pro alternative, especially older versions."
hborre
I would have the same concerns having used both the older and more recent versions. They may have their uses but my success with them has been limited and while there may be wider support there is very little advantage over the face room.
I having tried to use the room I did understand why it was not used but wondered about the lack of support or development. I therefore found the history very interesting and it explained a lot.

Thread: Installing Daz runtimes | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
I have seperated out my runtimes and they are placed on a different hard drive from drive 'C'. For example I have a runtime for V4, one for M4 another for Transportation and so on. When I install Daz files I pick the poser option and point it at the relevent runtime such as V4 dresses to V4 and cars to Transportation. I have not had a problem yet other than the Windows 7 warrning which, as already stated, can be closed as installed correctly.
The lastest files I have downloaded do not generate this warning so it looks as though they have fixed the problem. I doubt that they will go back and update older files though so I guess some will still generate the warning.

Thread: Have any of you ever become hostile towards the Poser Hobby? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
I have had periods when I have left Poser alone, both through lack of time and lack of any sort of inspiration. I use it just as a hobby and do not have a massive emotional commitment. During the times when I am stuck for ideas I tend to look deeper into Poser as I know I am not even close to pushing it's capabilities.
On the other hand I can understand what a daunting process reinstalling can be when you have lost a lot of data. However, Poser is not alone in this, and in the age of digital photography it is so easy to loose images that can never be reproduced.
My back up routine is simple I back up everything via an automated process to a 1Tb hard drive placed into a hot-swapable cradle. I rotate this hard drive once a week and twice a month I do another backup to a second 1tb that is held with a family member who lives close. That drive is rotated on each occasion. That gives me an immediate 1 week fall back and a two week fall back at a remote location (incase of theft or fire). The program also gives reports on the backup run and any failures.
The total hardware required is 3 X 1tb hard drives and a hot-swap cradle. The back ups are full in that the cover the program, runtime and renders and maintain the drive/file structure of the existing machine.
Of course the only time you know if a back up plan will work is when you need to back up. In my case the closest I have got is a machine build and full recovery in less than 18 hours from blank machine to working poser with all my renders from the past 6 years. A large chunk of that 18 hours was overnight as I left the drive running unattended. Not sure of the full size but that included seperate runtimes for Vicky 3, Vicky 4, Mike and David, Mike 4, Robots, Space, Places,Construction, Lights, Materials, Animals, Mythical Creatures, Furniture, Transport, Weapons, plus the usual Poser and download runtimes and python scripts.

Thread: last gasp | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
I have my content in seperate runtimes and just point any re-install of poser to the runtimes.
I also use Karen's Replicator to back up all of the runtimes as it keeps the folder structure intact. It also only backs up the differences in the folders on each backup. I run it evertime I download new content or have created renders I really want to keep.
If worse comes to the worst all you have to do is to get Replicator to re-load all the runtimes. A long process I accept but at least it you can leave it running overnight rather than coping a number of backups in sequence.
I know this does not help right at this moment but if you do get back to a working situation (which I really hope you do) you can then back up a known working config.
Finally, I know I am probably tempting fate here, but I run 2010 and appears to be very stable. I did have crashes on earlier versions but to be fair I was pushing it hard with limited memory.

Thread: What features do you look for when buying a 3D model? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
You make a very valid point regarding subsequent sales. One of the major factors that on my decision to buy or not is whether I have purchased other items from the same vendor and if I was pleased with the purchase.
I do try new vendors as well but if I have no history of their products the promos take on even more relevance.

Thread: Poser Preview Window Question - I feel stupid asking this but I need to know | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
As an ex-trainer my definition of a dumb question was - one that was thought of but never asked. On a forum like this I accept it can be annoying if the question has been asked a number of times before no-one bothered to do search before hand.
Point is I had noticed the same thing and did not know the answer so I did not regard it as a dumb question and now, like you, I have an answer to it. So thank you PXP for asking and also BB for providing the answer to yet another of my 'I wonder why' questions.

Thread: Poser Preview Window Question - I feel stupid asking this but I need to know | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
I have seen this and sometimes ticking 'enable hardware shading' under the preview tab of render settings has corrected this. However it does not always solve the probelm and can create more problems in the preview.

I hate to admt it, but really good promo images are actually important. If the promo images are badly rendered, I'm often deeply suspicious of the product, even though I've bought a few that were beautiful once, you know, you got to see them rendered with raytraced shadows enabled, etc."
I would second that, one character I purchased had such a bad promo that I put off buying it for ages, I returned time and again and read the technical spec and could not believe something with such a high spec could be so bad, I waited for some reviews but none appeared. Finally I took the plunge and it turned out to be fantastic from the first render. I cannot understand how the same character could produce such a bad set of promos. I did add a review to the character explaining what I had found but I am still sure that a number of sales were lost due to lack lustre promos.

Thread: Any Date for a Poser 9 or Pro 2011 Release? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Having worked technical support for the telecoms industry for around 15 years I came to know the the process of software development quite well and the 'gating' process often used. I also came to accept that the released dates always slip and that many of the features disappear and some 'undocumented features' pop up after release. The number of undocumented features varied but there were generally more were seen where the product was released early thus allowing the paying customer to provide a large chunk of the field testing. Of course some companies do this but allow the early adopters to buy a beta version at a much reduced price and a promise free or reduced upgrade to the full market product.
So what has this all to do with Poser, well I for one am happy to wait until SM are good a ready to release the next update. Poser is one of the few peices of software that I upgrade everytime whereas some I will skip one or two updates as I do not see the extra features as being worth further expense. I use Poser Pro 2010 due it's 64bit support and thanks to this support also built a new machine with more RAM and Windows 7 to make full use of the new update. I wonder just what I would have to have spent ten years ago produce the renders I do today, assuming it could be purchased at any cost.
Years ago I used to miss what I have today while I spent so much time looking at what I might have tomorrow. I guessed I have aged as I am now amazed at the capability and fucntionality Poser provides today for a relatively small cost and the money I spent on PP 2010 has kept me happy for the last year or more and, as I doubt I use it more than 10% of it capabilty, it will keep me occupied until the next update....whenever that might turn to be.

Thread: Faceshop? Anyone? Need Character Set from a Photo. | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
I have had some limited success with Faceshop EZ the earlier versions were hard work and the exported object appeared to be the wrong scale with taken into Poser. EZ changed this and it may not have been a problem with Daz anyway. I did get a lot of support when I first tried EZ so I cannot complain about that. However if you are looking for a ten minute 3d lookalike I would think again as both the mesh and the texture map needs a great deal of pose work. My textures tended to distort in the lips area. I was using some high quality studies from 3Dsk so that should not have been a problem.

Thread: Using Poser and Daz Studio for artistic purposes | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
"OK This will sound like an elitists Statement but the first step for the poser user seeking to become a "professional" is to Aquire and learn professional CG Software."
I didn't take it as elitist as this would appear to be a statement of fact, I say appear as I am no expert but I have seen the same view in publications such as 3D World and 3D Artist. In the same publications they recommend certain software dependant where an individual want's to earn a living such as Cinema or Game developement. I did tend to read both publications but then them became too industry based for me.
That said I use Poser for a hobby and, while I am happy to try and develop my techniques such programs are well outside what I can justify spending on a hobby. I am interested in the more photorealist images because that is where my interest is focused. From many of the images I see there is also a great drive to get that 'painted look' which does not really appeal to me. That said, it does not stop me from admiring such images and marvelling at the skill of others. What I am trying to is develop my own look with the limited of skill I have and try an understand other peoples goals and styles. To that end I have found this thread useful if a little too 'sharp' at times, not blaming anyone mind, just stating a personal view.

In the past I have had a hard drive slow down with age. It gave no trouble but showed up when I was creating a video and the program I was using did a speed test and marked it as unsuitable. Directed the program to another drive on the same system and it all went smoothly. A rare occurance and unlikely to be the case in both your machines but my be worth checking. There are a number of free test programs available.
