Quote - Daz explained that with the texture painting tools available now, that when doing the uv mapping, that to them it made sense to put parts of the figure that would benefit the most from hi resolution maps in thier own UV space.
Thats actually how it is also usually done in the pro 3d world as well, and probably where they got the idea from.
Yeah the seams are a pain for people using traditional legacy texture painting methods, but with all the outstanding tools available now, good texture painters take should be taking advantage of the new tools available.
I personally also preferred fewer seams as well back then.. but then again I was also using old legacy texture painting apps. Now I use zbrush and other things, and I hardly ever even worry about seams anymore.
Yes, exactly. Thank you.
I think the version I did has fewer seams than the original, but even so, was made more with Zbrush and Deep Paint 3D in mind, while I also tried to strike a balance for those who would use Photoshop for applying photo textures, and trying to minimize distortion as well.
As far as I know, SaintFox and BlueEcho are the only ones who have made textures for the latest Antonia versions (118-120?). I haven't actually seen BlueEcho's version aside from a few renders, but I do have SainFox's latest, which is very good. She used Photoshop too, and anyone who really knows what they're doing in Photoshop can deal with seams easily enough.
What dph is doing is cool and is looking good, but it's probably not going to be a freebie (correct me if I'm wrong), and personally I think that mapping a figure to accommodate existing textures is a really backwards way of going about it. Just because the general idea is to UV map a figure and then create textures for it - ideally you create distortion-free UV maps and then you have much better results with textures you create for that mapping. Mapping a figure to accommodate textures, it would seem to me, would almost guarantee lots of distortion all over the figure, making it more difficult to apply new textures to that mapping.
Now, that's just an assumption; I've never actually tried it, so I could be wrong about that, but I'd like to see that V3-Antonia mapping with a UV checker applied instead of a texture, before I'm convinced otherwise.

What do you use for UV mapping? UV Mapper? Can't you just select the teeth by material and isolate them that way?
I made the current UVs for Antonia (after v117, at least as of version 118, which I would assume is what v120 has). I used UVLayout Pro on the low res version and didn't need any morphs to get at the teeth, since with UVLayout you can just strip away geometry that's in the way and put it back together later. Not doubting you, just not understanding what you mean.
However, I made an open mouth morph for Antonia hi res, by rigging the mouth with joints in Lightwave and deforming it with the bones, as opposed to dragging points around. That morph is still on the dev site somewhere, I think. I could easily enough attach that rig to the low res version and make you an open mouth version for low res Antonia if you'd like.

No Joel, you misunderstand. I love doing 3D stuff, but there's an enormous variety of niches one can find oneself in within the realm of 3D. Some people are artists and some people are technicians. Some of the best animators out there, for example, couldn't draw a circle and paint within the lines. Some modelers don't even know where the render button is in Maya, but could build you an orc in five minutes with their eyes closed. ;-)
I don't enjoy battling my lack of design sense - making pictures, that is - ever since I realized I'm far more interested in other aspects of the 3D world. It's cool. ;-)

Can someone sum-up the plan? 171 pages is a LOT to go through.
I think the idea is basically to end up with a good figure. ;-)
It would be pretty difficult to sum it up. Even just in the few months I've been following the development, a whole lot has changed from the currently publicly available version - joints, UVs, textures, morphs - are all different now in a pretty significant way. There are probably twenty pages of just eye design discussions and arguments in this thread... not to mention everything else.
Antonia IS a fabulous figure though, and Olaf did a superb job modeling her, and the fact that she comes in a low res version as well as hi res makes her even better for many reasons.
I think odf will be making the most recent version publicly available here real soon.
Otherwise, happy reading. ;-)
EDIT-
Oh by the way, there are a lot more morphs than are currently in the version at the Antonia link. I imagine that will all get worked out soon enough.

120?
I didn't know Antonia was up to 120. I did just notice now that the version labeled 118 uses the 117 OBJ though.
I've been out of the loop for the whole past month and don't really know what's been going on with Antonia. ;-)

Olaf, which version did you send him, the latest 118 version (that's only on the Dev site otherwise), or the 117 version with the original mapping?
Just curious, because for what he's doing I think he'd find it easier to work on the more recent version, and being that some of the material zones have changed, he should probably know what's what.

Yes I too hope everybody had a safe and otherwise happy Holiday season, whether it was Christmas, Hanukkah, or even Festivus. ;-)
Personally, I'm just glad it's all over with. That whole month here in the US between Thanksgiving and Christmas is made far more hectic and complicated than it need be.

I guess that means I have to put away my 2x4.
Laurie, you know you don't want to do that. You're gonna need it eventually, might as well keep it within reach. ;-)

"What is your gallery like?"
Old and worn out. Memories from the beginning of my 3D journey that are still there mostly because I'm too lazy to clean them out.
It used to have about twice as much in it as now, but every now and then I go and delete a few more things. Eventually it will be completely empty. ;-)
I used to make "art" (mostly with Vue) for the sake of posting it here, mostly. Why though, I have no idea. Seemed to be thing to do at the time, although not being an "artist", 9 years later I have to wonder why I was doing it at all.
Now I just do technical 3D things for specific purposes and "art" doesn't fit into it at all, and I have no desire or urge to try to make purty pictures. ;-)

Nice picture, Blue Echo. :-)
No, and I had forgotten about that, but the latest version, which is still only available through the Antonia Developer site, far as I know, still has the newer eye UVs. I've been kind of out of the loop for the past month since I've been really busy, but as far as I know, the up and coming "final" Antonia will be using the older eye maps as found in the current release version.
Why are you using geometry switching to test textures?
And speaking of eyes, whatever became of BB's Antonia eyes?
Thread: Antonia - Opinions? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
I totally agree with Rogerbee1 above, plus I personally think that due to the technology and people's overall increased knowledge and ability, that V4 textures are better than V3 textures. So if Antonia were to be remapped to fit a different figure, V3 would be too much of a step into the past.
And I personally think it would be tragic to see people using V3 (or even V4 or any other) textures on Antonia. Antonia is hopefully going to be inspiring future creativity, not merging with the past.
Speaking of textures and remapping....
Olaf, since it's been a good while since the last modifications were made with the new UVs, is it about time I put out a link for the general public so anybody who wants to try making new textures for the final version can have at it?

Quote - So how much does this bug fix cost?
+/- $300 for Win 7 Ultimate Full Retail version, around 200 for system builder OEM and $100-something for upgrade.

I agree with you almost completely, except that I don't feel any need to bash Vista over it. I never had any problems with Vista. But then again I also build my own computers and all my hardware for the past three years was assembled with Vista in mind. There are ways of beating Vista into total submission, which is what I did, and anyone with good hardware and the patience to de-Vista it shouldn't have problems either.
But yeah, Windows 7 is considerably faster and far more efficient. I'm still not allowing UAC, but I found that disk indexing in Widows 7 is far more efficient and less annoying than with Vista, so it's nice to be able to turn that feature on for a change.
One thing though, don't let Windows 7 install drivers for anything. Do not turn on the feature for checking for driver updates, do not believe anything Windows ever tells you about updating drivers for any hardware, or you WILL have problems. Always get drivers for hardware from the manufacturer when possible. I mean hardware such as motherboards, input devices, video cards, sound cards and so on, not SATA drives or CD/DVD drives.
Also, if you use a pen and tablet for Photoshop, Zbrush, whatever, disable the Micro-crap from the Services as well as turn off the optional features for pen input in the Control Panel, since Windows 7 will totally commandeer your pen and tablet controls otherwise.
It takes a while to set up properly. Files with a .bat extension can't be added to the taskbar. I'm still waiting for a truly "pro" version of Windows that excludes all the nannyware, bloatware and crapware and just gives me an OS, but I have a feeling that's not even being worked on.
All things considered though, Windows 7 is the best Windows yet, IMO. It probably has a lot to do with their new open beta policy. Hopefully they'll continue that into the future.
Thread: large scenes crash poser 8 on render | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Well that's strange if you can render it in Poser 7 but not Poser 8, with separate process checked.
But in your first post you said Poser Pro, not Poser 7. Is that 64 bit Poser Pro? Because that would explain why it renders there and not in Poser 8.
At any rate, even in Poser 8 in a separate process, I think it would still choke on a scene using more than 2 GB of RAM.

Quote - That was my reason to say "I dare to ask" . Antonia should be a challenging but still fun project and you should write "spare time" to your calendar here and there as well!! So I do as well, and when I have some extra-spare time I will do some more eyes (with the old mapping - version 114, right?!) and add them to the sets I've uploaded so that you are up to date.
Yes, that would be version 114, to answer your question.
I wish I had some more spare time. Doesn't seem to be in the cards for me until the beginning of next year though, but I hope to do some more morphs, as well as finish a few things I've started. I've got some clothes for Antonia partially done, as well as a pair of sunglasses, and a few props. I hope I can get back at that stuff soon.
During the whole eye discussion I decided to make a pair of sunglasses for her, figuring maybe if we can't see her eyes, maybe it wouldn't matter which set she had. ;-)

My plan for the next preview release is this: the original mapping for the eyes, Mike's for everything else.I'm having a bit of a hard time at the moment motivating myself to do Antonia stuff. Nothing to worry about; it's just that I have two long-term projects to handle at my job, and dealing with a third one after work becomes a bit overwhelming at times. So I'm not quite sure when exactly I'll spring back into full action mode, but I'm hoping to get the next preview out before the end of the year.
Yeah, I'm in the same boat, project and work-wise. I'm also going to be doing a good bit of traveling around over the next month or so, what with the Thanksgiving and Christmas and New Year's holidays and all, and may not be around very much, may not get online here too often.
So I'll repeat again that you have my full permission to use anything and everything I've done for Antonia in the next release - UV maps, morphs, skull caps, whatever you want. I'm just mentioning that because I don't want to hold anything up and if you message or email me about any of that I may not be around to read it.
So I'm once again making it a matter of public record that I agree completely with the whole Creative Commons license and all that good stuff.
Thanks for the texture set BlueEcho! Looks good, and your new one seems to be off on a good start too. :-)
