THE PLACE FOR ALL THINGS BRYCE - GOT A PROBLEM? YOU'VE COME TO THE RIGHT PLACE

Subject: for curiousity's sake

moonhawk ( ) posted Fri, 07 March 2008 at 10:13 AM · edited Tue, 12 November 2024 at 2:52 AM

How does one get folks to view their images?  I don't think my work is that bad, maybe not up to the standards of many among the Bryce community, but not the worst of what gets posted on Renderosity either.  Yet I get so few views I can't help but wonder what I am doing wrong.  Is there a secret to thumbnails, titles, keywords and so forth?

sigh  It is so discouraging!

That is what I thought also then people just started to comment on my images, at that point I really set out to please the audience and work harder at the renders.  I must of posted about 30 images before I got anyone looking - the best thing to do is to comment on others images then they will like to comment on yours and you can make friends as well that way...

sackrat ( ) posted Fri, 07 March 2008 at 10:28 AM

I dunno,...........as for me, I do images for myself,.............if people like them, so be it. I try to challenge myself to use whatever app to the fullest, really push it to the limits of my abilities. I'm more interested in personal satisfaction than pleasing others. But that's just me.

Over the years, this question has been asked many times.  The consensus answers are as follows:

The quick (and dirty) way:  Put a naked girl in the picture, flag the 'Nudity' check-box, and post exclusively in the Poser gallery.  Your view count will shoot through the roof.  Appeals to those who just want people to look.

A slightly slower way is to start commenting on others' works, marking pictures as 'Favorites' , and artists as 'Favorites".  The artists get email notices of these, and come to check you out in return.  This is the "Join a clique" method.  Appeals to those who want to be buddies with people.

Slower, but most honest way:  Post a notice of new pics in the forum where it most aptly belongs (such as here, if you use Bryce) and people with similar interests will look.  Ask for honest reviews and critiques, and don't be too offended if/when people offer some.... Most of the folks in the Brycean forums will be courteous and gentle.

Don't be discouraged.....there are a lot of new images being posted every day, a lot of them with nekked girlies in them, and things tend to be lost in the shuffle.  Persistence pays off in the end.

My advise would be to follow h92o's last item re: commenting on others work...it's a 2 way street and this approach does work....in addition to pushing yourself to do the very best every time out.. ...

I guess it really depends on what result you are looking for with your images and how much exposure you need to be content.

I tend to be of the same thought expressed by Sackrat, lacking the 'pushing the app to its fullest potential'  as I am just a hobbyist with all this. When I get an inspiritation, I spend some time on it but am not a process investigator as such.

dan whiteside ( ) posted Fri, 07 March 2008 at 11:46 AM

I don't know if I should say this but I've been posting my images at 3dCommune. Renderosity is pretty much dominated by the Poser folks (nothing wrong with that!)  but 3DC has more Bryce images posted then any other. I generally get about 8 comments per image over there and often some very good suggestions...

AnnieD ( ) posted Fri, 07 March 2008 at 11:58 AM

I agree with Dan about 3DCommune and Bryce...there are lots of Brycers there and I get more comments and suggestions there than anywhere..on Bryce.

But I also agree that if you want people to come visit your gallery...go visit their's.  What goes around comes around.

When I had *'friends' *I had more comments, but since I got rid of them to see how many comments I gained just Because the work was good and not influenced by commenting on others unless it was something I though was worth commenting on.... but now I don't get many comments. So either my art is 'ordinary and uninteresting' or it's because I have chosen not to have 'friends' (well I do have a few but thats only because I like their art so much I want to keep track of any new uploads.

But I must admit a lot of fine art gets swamped in the galleries and only if you have a certain artist flagged to alert you on a new upload will you get to see it unless you have time to spare trawling through all those Quick poser renders LOL to find the decent stuff..... (I do believe there are excellent Poser renders, but of course these can be few and far between.

A rule of thumb I guess is that what an artist believes is good is not always reflected by the viewer....... and this is where friends come into play... usually they'll give a good comment just to receive a good comment on their own work, regardless of how good the art is.... I see this so many times and wonder if it's actually worth looking forward to comments anymore.

Bottom line is.... I refuse to comment on other peoples work in order to recieve comments... it kinda defeats the object; doesn't it?

AnnieD ( ) posted Fri, 07 March 2008 at 12:27 PM

I completely agree dhama!
I will not comment if I don't see something worth commenting on!
I don't collect friends but I do flag artists that I've found whose work I admire....even yours...lol
Sometimes I don't comment..because sometimes, rather than criticize..I just look and go on because I don't always feel qualified to tell someone what to do to be better.
I know what I like..if I like it I tell you....if I don't...it only means I don't like it, not that there's something wrong with it.

But the fact remains that there are so many wonderful artists here that you can't possible have enough time to keep up with all of them without flagging them as faves or friends.  If a person only wanted to get lots of comments by collecting friends..they wouldn't have enough time to keep up either.   I comment on lots of artists who  never come to see my work..but that's not a problem to me...like Digimon says..."so many artists so little time".

I think timing is also a factor. You are less likely to get comments if you post on a weekend. A lot of folks are dealing with real life stuff and/or don't visit the site at that time. I would recommend posting around midweek.

Thanks everyone for your feedback!!

Like Annie D, I look at a lot of work that I don't feel needs a comment because:  they have tons already; or I just don't have anything to say about it, good OR bad!  When something really blows me away, I'll comment.

I do this mostly for myself, and to please myself, but like any other creative endeavors in my life, having someone at least LOOK at my work means a lot, even if they don't comment.  I'm that way about my jewerly; even if someone doesn't buy anything, it means alot when they stop and look.

I thought about the 'collecting friends' and marking favorites but like someone already said, that just isn't my way, never has been.

3Dcommune sounds worth checking out and I will do that when my computer quits crashing and I have more time online!

Again, thanks to everyone who commented!

moonhawk ( ) posted Fri, 07 March 2008 at 1:30 PM

Oh, and it's not so much comments as just having folks take a look - I've had as few views as ten on an image, while those posted right after or before had 30 or 40.

Now THAT is discouraging!

ThunderStone ( ) posted Fri, 07 March 2008 at 1:40 PM

You know ... This should be made into a STICKY because each one of you gave the reader good answers about the viewing and commenting. It will help future artists who come in here and does not have a clue on how to attract viewers and comments. What to do or not do... Some of your answers are t. i. c.  (:m_tongue2:) others are downright solid and honest and the rest was of varying qualities.

As for me, I am not sure how to go about getting viewing and commenting, or rating but I do know if the art work is very interesting enough, people will comment on it. I have come across artists in other galleries whose art works are so :woot: that I am like this: 🤤 I've often wondered how they did it and try to emulate them using my own style. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't.

I am not complaining tho... I haven't been around that long, so people are not familiar with my particular style of rendering which is rather amateurish at best. Still I can see a progression of improvement in my rendering each time I post. There has been some backward slippage but heck, for each step I take forward in improvement, there's bound to be about 9 steps back.

Take your time, do the art work for yourself, post,  look at others, study them, analyze the trend of those that get the most comments and ratings and see how yours compare with them, then try to build up your skills so that you will improve and it shows in your renderings. And if you get a comment or rating, great!!! If not, don't get discouraged. Just try again. Do art YOUR way.

You could always refer to nudity in thumbnails or titles that pulls viewers :-P
Also commenting on others helps. Freebies, tutorials, form activity, etc. all help
Also it helps to not upload right in the weekend or at peek hours. Lots of people will upload their work, and yours will be lost somewhere after the first 2 pages in no time.

Getting views usually depends on being noticed, being liked, using nudity or plain old being rediculously good.

*I wouldn't recommend this unlless there is actual nudity in the image as it will get retagged and you will get  warning, or get the image put in holding till we recieve a non nude thumbnail.. ...

A little late in this thread, but I agree with TheBryster!!!

I've noticed that the volume of comments varied depending on the time of day I've posted something...which also is effected on how long you're artwork stays on the front page of the gallery before it gets cycled off to the next page by other new artwork being posted.

Now if people who've seen you're work and Like it and flag it.. than they will get a notice when you post a new image.  There are several artists here who's art I really enjoy and so everytime they post I get a notice in my e-mail.  So I  dont necessarily have to browse the gallerys all the time.

pakled ( ) posted Fri, 07 March 2008 at 8:20 PM

This is a perennial favrut in the Poser forum. Simple things I've noticed.

Use bright, warm primary colors on things. Bright pics get more hits

T*ts get hits...'fraid so. Cleavage (even if the thumbnail is two fruits cropped in a suggestive way (it's been done..;) works as well

Eyes- facing the camera, slightly dilated, lots of makup, full, lush, lips, eyebrows, thick hair....yada yada.

One of the following - a suggestive title, double entendre`, or just punctuation at random.

The 'content' of the day...something that just went on sale, or freebie, that everyone likes, because everyone else is using the same stuff...;)

Of course, you can use Daz Studio to get things into Bryce (though I hear troubling things about 2.0...;)

anywho...that's what seems to work, in a mercenary, calculating way...;)

I wish I'd said that.. The Staircase Wit

I create what I do for myself, I have no particular style or desire to be popular, it's all about learning the Software. If other artists view my work thats a bonus, if they leave a comment thats a bigger bonus.

I subscribe to kiwi's school of thought. If people want to tell me what they think of my work, I am more than grateful, if not it doesn't matter. As for commenting... It depends how I feel. I very rarely offer critique as in most instances I do not feel qualified to do so, but if I really like an image I'll let the artist know. @pakled - Looking at my own gallery the other day, I noticed I use black alot. Nice warm fuzzy black.

Is anything wrong with that? Michaelangelo had his favorite color scheme... I like black... So don't knock yourself down.  Keep using black in your work. It has become your art trait.

I guess I would have to say I do a few things:

  1. post here that a work is done just in case people don't inspect the "what's new" as compared to the forums as much.

  2. Try to get a grabbing Thumbnail.

  3. Comment on other people's images I have an opinion about (not just saying great job to everyone)

  4. Good search words and gallery association.  Know the galleries that get the most views, since software is pretty much going to be Bryce, pick the next part carefully.  (or lie HA!)

  5. Whine.  Endlessly.  Ask some of the old timers.  I'm terrible. LOL 😉

Then again, I usually don't get much more than 100-150 views on images.  Most average about 70ish.  I have only one that I got over 1000.  Maybe I should do more of those.
