Subject: I have questions about poser.

Ok, I'm new in all this 3D design, i own the following softwares, Cinema4d, 3DS Max 7, Maya 6, Lightwave 8, Carrara 4 pro, Softimage XSI, Bryce & Poser 5,
I have questions about poser, i saw that here lots of people sells models, what i want to know if they use poser 5 to create models for poser or they use other software?
if they do what are those?
in fact i wanna know everything that you need to create new models for poser, if anyone could help i'll be thankful.

maxxxmodelz ( ) posted Thu, 20 January 2005 at 8:28 AM

"Ok, I'm new in all this 3D design" Wait a minute. You're "new to 3d", but you have Cinema4D, 3dsmax 7 (newest version), Maya 6, Lightwave 8, Carrara Pro 4, Softimage XSI, Bryce AND Poser 5??????? THat's like almost $10,000 in software there! You're either very, very, very ambitious, or you just won the lotto. ;-)

First, Poser is NOT a modeling program. But then again, many marketplace products are not models, but texture sets, created in Photoshop or PSP. Models are made using a variety of modeling programs, and since you have some of the high-end modelers, you're all set on the software side. I use 3D Studio Max 4.26, others use Wings3D, Carrara, Truespace, Anim8tor or Lightwave, each to his/her own preferences and budget. If you want to create models for Poser, there's a book you will definitely need: Secrets of Poser 5 Figure Creation, by B.L. Render. The best book on Poser technical stuff I've ever seen. I sure hope you own all that software legally, there's a zero tolerance policy towards warez on renderosity.

DCArt ( ) posted Thu, 20 January 2005 at 10:06 AM

Yeah for someone that is "new to 3D" he sure has a lot of software! It had to have been the lottery, huh? To model clothing, you have to learn your modeling software. And from the looks of it you have a LOT to learn, in more ways than one. ;-)

hmm..there could be other explanations, but I'll be nice..;) from the list above, the only thing you *can't* make models in is Bryce (well you can make them, but they only work in Bryce). Making models is not for the 'new to 3d'..but you can always try. Dr. Geep has a robox tutorial (saw it a few posts down from here, in fact) that explains how you get a model to pose in Poser once it's imported. I use something called Wings 3d (free, but hey, with that lineup, I can't compete..;), which is a good place to start with basic modeling, such as props, etc.

Well lets see. First, learn how to make a cube in each one of those programs. Then, learn how to make a sphere in all of those programs. Then learn how to make a cylinder in all of those programs. :) Just kidding. The first thing you probably want to do is pick one of those applications to use and stick with it. It takes a while to learn them. The procedures for modeling in each one is differant (just to add some fun). Not only do you need to learn about modeling, you need to learn UV mapping for the textures as well as getting and learning a good image editing program like PhotoShop. By the sounds of things you may already "own" it. You have a pretty long road ahead of you. Trying to bounce between all those 3D apps will only confuse and frustrate you. If you stick with it you are in for a fun and rewarding time. If this is a lotto winner it is proof why most are broke within 5 years of winning. LOL Cheers, Joe

He didn't mention versions, but if he has the best of each (C4D Studio - $3000, Maya UL - $6000, etc.), that's more like $20,000. Lottery or P2P, your guess is as good as mine.

Well, in essence, the subject line is good, but for specificity it sucks. I do agree on this though. Searching for particular subjects when the subject is one that you mentioned, is a rather fruitless endeavor. Plus it makes for a 'lottery' system of checking out new threads! ;) We should really enact the plan to put the big FAQ at the top for new members. They should be disallowed to post until they've read the FAQ - enforcing that might be difficult though... :)

"Need advice" "I have questions about poser" What the blinking flip is difficult about writing a meaningful title? /rant :) And, lmckenzie, I'd agree with the "Arr, Jim Lad" assessment. :D

You saying this thread should be "Ahrrr" rated? I hate the "help, new please!!!!" thread titles too. Lately I've been altering the subject line on my reply to more aply describe the thread (aka "Help fit clothes to big breasts" or "how to apply a texture") Maybe if enough of the newbies (and oldies, too!) see these "corrections" they'll be more informative with their subject lines. Or maybe not. Newbies are always impatient. A good half of the questions I see were answered in depth in the previous week's worth of posts.

I've got the same software lineup, except softimage and carrara. Took a look at my files and almost crapped myself! $17,587.00! Although that's with addons and etc.. But for a starter in 3d...WOW! Very impressive! I can see how it might raise questions.

Bobbie_Boucher ( ) posted Thu, 20 January 2005 at 5:21 PM

Oh gosh, voodoographix must not think we're smart enough to wonder how he/she got all that software. Another thing I hate: every 2 days someone asks: "Do you recommend Poser 4 or Poser 5?" And people keep answering the same question(s) over and over. Hey, why not just take some time to read?! By the way, I recommend Poser 5, and no, I don't have all that software, and didn't win the Lotto.

"Another thing I hate: every 2 days someone asks: "Do you recommend Poser 4 or Poser 5?" And people keep answering the same question(s) over and over." Hehehe. No doubt. Here's something else that seems very common: someone will ask a valid question and 7 different people will respond it, all with the same basic answer, as if the previous person who posted the correct answer before them didn't even exist. It's like a virtual "echo". LOL. I'm not talking about this thread, it's just some humorous forum behavior I've observed in general. I'm probably guilty of it myself. LOL. However, I always like to quote people in my posts if I'm responding to something specific, otherwise it just looks like you're talking out loud to anyone who would listen. God, I wish this forum had a quote feature. ;-)

That must be some pay scale you make? to be able to aford that to be shipped to Iraq? Oh and just to add: I USED TO BE IN THE NATIONAL Guards, Army. I know the Army pay scales very well.

zippyozzy ( ) posted Fri, 21 January 2005 at 6:45 AM

oh and just for my advice to you as a beginner: you should go to DAZ signup and download their free V3 & M3 figure bases for starters. Just signup, it's free and click on each figure's link at the top of their page and just click paypal for the free downloads to use with Poser5. You can't make Poser models from those other programs, you're best bet is to simply learn from them. You can make models from 3D Max but not real Poser figures. Learn the programs first, experiment. If it was that easy to make a 3D character figure then everybody would be doing it and putting Poser figures out of business. all you get are the 'scrapes' from what people make on here, not a complete figure you can only get that from Daz Studio. cheers.

"Yeah you said it national guard, and no they were not shipped to iraq, but one that was poser 5, yo guys can say anything you want but i'll garantee you that i'll make it one day, without your help people, thanks again for your post." Hey, if you're really a soldier, thanks for serving our country in Iraq. Keep up the good work, and come home soon. If that's just a bullshit line you used to make us all "feel bad" for calling your bluff, then you deserve to be sent to Iraq with a sign saying, "I love Saddam" on you back. B-) I'll presume what you said is true, and give you the benefit of the doubt. Now here's my advice to you as a beginner... I think you put too much on your plate up front, and chances are you're going to end up confused and frustrated, having spent more time learning each program than you normally would have. It took me over a year to get a full grasp of what could be done in 3dsmax alone, and that's after having taken a professional course on it. That's how deep the program is. Also, you came here asking for help in a most absurd way: "i wanna know everything that you need to create new models for poser." Given the scope of the applications you claim to own, and the complexity of modeling in general (let alone for Poser), that request in and of itself was an impossibility. Pick ONE application to start learning with, then sit back, read forums and do as many tutorials as you can find on the web. Read the manual. Practice and explore your application. THEN, and only then, come back and ask something a little more specific that people can actually help you with. Good luck! ;-)

So what kind of accommodations do you have there in Iraq? I had visions of soldiers living in tents, or temporary barracks. I never imagined that soldiers in a foreign country would have the kind of living arrangements that would allow them to setup a computer and do computer-generated artwork. Do you have a laptop that you carry in a backpack, along with all your equipment?

voodoographix ( ) posted Fri, 21 January 2005 at 9:42 AM

we have what we call free time, yes i do own a laptop, accomodations after being here a year plus it got better, new soldiers coming in so the place gets better, me i only have a few months left before i return home , so by that the unit is in stand by just waiting to leave taji, yes i have lots of free time now, i already did what i had to do here in a year. P.S we still use the computer in a MWR tent.

Bobbie_Boucher ( ) posted Fri, 21 January 2005 at 9:50 AM

Hey, what unit are you in? What service branch? What is your rank? What's your address? Some people might want to send you some letters to help brighten your day. I remember what it was like to be in the military. We used to wait for letters, and "care packages" that had wonderful things like home-baked cookies, etc.

Guys dont you think that maybe someone could have alot of free money to spend on these programs? He didnt say he bought them all at once. Besides my brother is in the military and he has alot of free cash since he dosent have alot of bills like rent etc. This gives him more then enough cash to spend on fun stuff like 3d programs etc. Plus we dont know, maybe he has a large saveings or inheritence. Dont just assume that everyone is a theif. If he is then he will get caught eventually. I know you all feel the need to protect the makers of these programs but sometimes you guys go for the throat when you dont have enough evidence to convict the person. It makes new people not want to ask for help here. Im not trying to start a falme war Im just giveing my 2 cents. It just seemed like he got jumped on without a good enough reason to do so.

When one posts such messages, it is important to anticipate how others might react. If people express concerns, it's important to respond to them, accurately, and in a way to help dispel those concerns. At this point, I haven't seen anything in the public, or Private Messages that really convinces me. However, I have more important concerns. So I wish vodoographix well. PS: If the military really does make so much money, they surely must have had significant raises since my day. It's almost enough to make me wish I were young enough to re-enlist. But then I have an aversion to bullets.

As a military veteran who is single i can attest to the fact that one can actually have alot of ones income be "disposable" I can remember living in the barracks(free) getting unlimited free meals with my meal card in the "chow" hall and blowing my Entire paycheck two hours after getting it on the latest component for my ridiculously overwrought mega-stereo system (the good old days!!). etc.etc. Having said that however it does seem strange that one who would buy softimage and MAX7 as well as c4D and LW plus the hardware to run them, would be here asking if poser models could be made with them. but oh well...whatever

Agreed. Something just doesn't seem right. In order to afford all of those programs he wouldn't have had much left over from his pay, from what I have found about soldier's salaries.

That is, unless the military gets discounts. That might explain the costs. But it still doesn't explain why anyone would buy ALL of those packages at the same time. Most people would do their homework and select one, or maybe two of them.

I don't know voodoographix, but I do know there are quite a few soldiers with laptops, and there is also a lot of sharing in the units (software, movies, music, etc). If voodoographix really did legitimately purchase that much software without knowing how to use any of it I would suggest taking classes. Start with money management.

We're also talking about a soldier in a war-torn, foreign country. We're not talking about a cushy military barracks in the US. Admittedly, I was in the National Guard. My own US experience was more primitive. I was always in the old "Temporary Barracks" made during World War II. Our only furnishings consisted of a bunk and a foot locker. We were lucky to have a bathroom indoors. One barracks had the bathrooms in a big shed outside. Another thing that concerns me: usually I'm able to swap "stories," or "military talk" with anyone who's in the service. I didn't get any of that, even in Private Messages. Beyond that, I have more pressing personal concerns.

nomuse ( ) posted Fri, 21 January 2005 at 4:21 PM

Pay has certainly gone up....I was averaging seven thousand a year in the US Army, as an E4, with hazard pay, too. I bought a computer, sure. And a used car. But it was tight. Had to borrow from my sergeant to swing the computer. I don't want to beat this horse, tho. Salutes to voodoo, and please share some stories with us old-timers. And we are willing to help anyone who is willing to do the work. Sorry if you got a bad reception, voodoo. There's been some funny stuff happening around lately and people are edgy. 3d can be tough, and modelling is one of the tougher subjects of 3d, and rigging models for animation tougher than that. It as yet can't be distilled down to a few posts on what to do. So the information and help you need is going to spread about various threads, forums, and external tutorials and links from these. And come into chat some time. There's almost always someone there, and usually someone who knows a bit about 3d... :)

military pay wages are low for enlisted men but if he really is there and it sounds like he is then my hats off to him if he could saveup all that money on his scale. National Guards do not make the same amount Regular Army does. If he's single then I can understand. He needed to express himself better than what he did in is first post. He should still go to the DAZ website and DL V3 & M3 since they are free. I still can't see how being in a warzone with free time on your hands? When I served I had anything but freetime lol. Even if he made 10,000 a year it might be possible if he's single and has no family or children. I still wouldn't install all that on just one computer though, heavy overload. He should just install Poser and start learning how to render 3D figures first. That alone takes time to get the knack of it. ;)

Years ago I knew a guy who was working in some arabic countries. There he could buy original software very cheap, because they couldn't get any support for them. Internet wasn't allowed in most of the parts he was in, so no customer support, no updates, nothing except of what was on the cd. He did have access to the internet though because of the company computers, but the natives didn't. *Oh - I forgot to mention that the software he bought was in english.
