Now Now Ricky, although Joe McCarthy is a tad infamous, he did work to protect the US from subversion by communist interests.  All be it he went over the line in the Senate Army hearings.  For more information regarding Joe McCarthy from a point of view that isn't blatantly hostile to him, read Ann Coulter's book: "Treason: Liberal Treachery from the Cold War to the War on Terrorism ".   She devotes a section to him and what he did.  I'm not putting this one out to debate here, but rather for people who want to read another side of McCarthy that has been kept out of the national debate.  Interesting read.

Plus he's an Appletonian like me, as well as Wilem Dafoe, and Harry Houdini (who has a nice museum there) and Edna Ferber (author).

Oh yeah, another Wisconsin first, Worlds first Residential Hydroelectric power grid.  Okay it was one house at first, Hearthstone, but still. :c)

Oh yeah, Appleton, WI is also home of the John Birch Society too.  They're even too right-wing for me on many things.

I have a book somewhere on all the Scots contributions to the world, and how they 'saved' England in the 17th-18th Centuries. There was also 'the Wealth of Nations', one of the original books on economics.

but then I have another book called 'How the Irish saved Civilization'...so I guess it's always something..;)

Well, I'm a decendant of the McVitties, so I think the Scots are the bomb.   Although, hollow pipe drainage was used in Crete about the time of the Minoans .... so I think the Scots can only claim to have "rediscovered" it.  Still, a good thing they did.

mboncher, I have little or no respect for Ann Coulter, even though I am a conservative in most regards, I can not tolerate the woman.  I'm not about to spend any money supporting her writing.  I'll stick with my own view of McCarthy.  I think he did more to harm the American spirit than he did saving America from subversives.  However, I absolutely respect your right to believe otherwise (both about Ann Coulter and Joseph McCarthy).

OK,  WHO PUT UP MORRISSEY???????

Jeez! I HATE Morrissey. He is without doubt the most boring, talentless, miserable so called singer I have ever heard. Talk about music to slash your wrists too......Some idiot on the AOL Star of the Month called him ' The King of Rock And Roll'.  I was so disgusted I tried to get the guy fired.

Lyrics like 'I wanted a job - so I got a job....' are so pathetic I just want to puke. Anyone who sings in one key and only uses 2 notes needs putting out of our misery.

If we're going to put up singers and bands, let's put up some real talent, like, Black Sabbath, ELP, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Uriah Heep, Deep Purple, YES, Genesis, Led Zeppelin...............not bloody Morrissey....

(And while the Bee Gees are without doubt very popular, I believe they only came to stardom after emigrating to Australia.)

Why would the NC monument at Gettysburg read "First at Sumpter"??  Sumpter is in SC in Charleston Harbor.  That makes no sense at all to me.

Could be worse, could be raining.

rickymaveety ( ) posted Wed, 17 January 2007 at 10:35 PM

Actually, the whole thing doesn't make sense, pakled.  The NC State Monument at Gettysburg doesn't have anything like that written on it .... at least I'm pretty certain not.

The "last at Appomattox" was the 14th NC Regiment, but they were not at either Sumpter or Gettysburg.

So .... nope .... no makie da sense.  :)

Sorry if I brought back some painful memories there Bryster :) I don't like Morrissey either, or Take That! Or a fair few others I put there. But they are from Manchester, so thats why I put them. The Inspirals though are one of the coolest bands on the planet - Clint Boon DJ's for my local radio station too :) Sadly Star4mation, Boddies moved 2 years ago to Preston. That's ok ... no harm done ... I was just confused.  I grew up whistling Dixie and know my Confederate history backwards forwards and sideways (used to have all sorts of arguments with my teachers in the lower grades because they do an awful job of teaching the Civil War ... really awful ... borderline pathetic.  They sidestep all the Constitutional issues, barely discuss the representational and economic issues, and make it sound like the war was all about the peripheral issues - just because those were the ones that got the public's interest.)

Eeeeech ... don't get me started, I'll be ranting about the US school systems until the cows come home, grow old, puke up blood and die.

Could be worse, could be raining.

pakled ( ) posted Fri, 19 January 2007 at 7:31 PM

it's funny, the most I learned about the Civil War was from a multi-volume history called 'The History of the English-speaking Peoples' (you couldn't even use a title like that today..;)  written by Winston Churchill..;)

I guess it was just bragging by the local re-enactors or something (tried that once, wool uniforms are scratchy..;)

I guess it depends on what military the South had during the debacle at Sumpter.  If NC had volunteer units (probably just artillery at that point, at Sumpter), it's vaguely possible..;)

Most of the Civil War history is taught like trivia nowadays..it's just disconnected, facts, like the woman who got impregnated by a minie ball, what torpedoes were back then (as opposed to now), etc. This, despite being the most written-about conflict (in the 1990s, there were over 60,000). go figure.

rickymaveety ( ) posted Fri, 19 January 2007 at 9:34 PM

Kiwi if you do want to travel the Nullabor make sure you plan it out well and you carry plenty of water and food you can cook on the side of the road. Reason i tell you this is the last time i travelled the Nulla a cup of coffee cost nearly $3.00, steak and salad was around $11.00, ltr petrol was up around $1.30(15 years ago) oh plus sleeping is another thing you want to plan as well, it cost me and the wife $125 for a double room 1 night and i actually slept better in the car than i did in that bed.

I have a book of Civil War oddities. This actually happened. A woman was close to the front lines, a la Molly Pitcher, and a Confederate round went through...uh...the scrotum of a soldier, out the back, and into the body of the woman behind him. The conception happened, and 9 months later she gave birth. They got married, and had 11 children the 'normal' way.

Nowadays you should always check stuff that sounds too good or too wierd to be real against something like Snopes.com for any urban legends running around.  Like Coke being used to degrease engines and the like.  Or watch a lot of mythbusters.  A very relevant show for this day and age of data pollution.

I can just imagine, in the future, we'll have to cybernetically implant "factcheckers" to run data through and catch falsehoods before we get too suckered in.  There are things about the information age that really suck.

rickymaveety ( ) posted Sun, 21 January 2007 at 5:31 PM

The minnie ball impregnation was on Snopes as well as that other site I noted.  I do check just about every ol' thing I'm told these days.

If I haven't done the medical, legal, or historical research myself, such that when I'm told something I know it to be true based on that research, I do it as soon as I get the chance.

I find that most of what I am told, in good faith mind you ... no one is intentially lying to me .... is just plain wrong.  But, that's the way of information ... once something is "out there" most people take it as gospel truth, and pass it on that way.

That's what killed Paul McCartney back in the early 70s.

Keep in mind that the Internet is the new "printed word."  That bogus minnie ball story started out as a spoof item in a Civil War newspaper.  It was then reprinted in other papers whose editors did not realize it was a spoof ... and on from there.

Now, it's on the Internet ... but that is really no more than additional dissemination of the original printed material, unfortunately most of the time without the entire history of the item.

The thing about the Internet is that it allows these things to have a much faster and broader dissemination than was available back in the days when only  hard copy publications were available.  And, you know us humans .... we read something (whether in real or virtual print) and we tend to think it's true.
