Subject: Is she an adult or a child?

I finally watched "Arthur and The Invisibles" and totally fell in love with the movie and the princess (my wife just looked at me rather and shook her head). Anyway I have been trying to create small (short) adult (before I saw this movie) and the princess gave me a good idea for the size. I was trying to put an elf head on YT Laura and finally did thanks to the help of TrekkieGrrrl. YT Laura's body just would't work. I had been trying to work with reshaping Aiko...so I went back to her. It took a while and I finally came up with this. I still have some work to do on the shins (side View)

Does she look like a Short adult or a child

It is bothersome that people confuse "short" with "child", even if there are blatant things like large breasts/hips, or crow's feet.  In this case I think the shorter character actually looks more mature, but both seem to be fully grown up to me.  I'd suggest bigger hips on the shorter girl though, they seem a bit too narrow for the rest of the body.

ps: it's no wonder your wife looked at you funny ;)

pjz99 I am glad you pointed the hips out, now that I look at it they are too narrow.
I know what you mean "people confuse "short" with "child"" , my wife is only 4'10", her mother, father and grandmother were all 4'9, People used to look at me in rather disgusting way, when we would any where and walk hand in hand and she is only 2 years younger than me.
Thanks for the tip about the hips

To me both look "child-like" because of the face. The face looks really young, and if you are thinking of posting this character in the gallery, I'd strongly suggest that she be well clothed and in a cutesy pose that is not provocative or suggestive in anyway.  I don't really think that image would withstand the scruitiny and be allowed to stay because a big thing that is looked at and is the deciding factor for many is the age of the face regardless of whether the figure is short or tall or has size 99ZZZZ boobs or is flat chested.

they're just digital representations of surfaces rendered in some 3d software, probly poser. they're not actual humans, neither adults nor children IMVHO. however, some folks will complain about nudie pix using aiko, and they may also complain about the other model.

I agree. But there is a child nudity rule here that extends beyond "real" and into purely digitally created.  I was just saying that this site probably wouldn't allow that character to be posted in this gallery in that outfit because of how young her face looks.

However, I'm also not a moderator and have no say, so the best thing to do would be to submit the image to one of the Mods and ask them to review it and give you an answer.

I always tell people that if they aren't sure it's best to get the image "pre-approved" before uploading it. It could mean the difference of a blemish on their account.

Studied in Eastern philosophy, Korean born Author of the book "Sex Secrets of and American Geisha", Kim Conant, having a B.A. in psychology from UCLA, and a M.A. in education from California State University is 4’9” and 90 pounds at 44 years of age. She would laugh at being called underaged. Hehehe. Most the Japanese students at the university I attended barely scratched 5' tall and half of the adults in my mostly Mexican neighborhood are under 5' tall. At over 40 years old myself I'm barely over 5' tall. :)

Not quite what actually happens. If he does this, she will become a child. All naked meshes become children if Mods see them. That is the definition of "child," you see: What the mod sees.

I would agree with pjz99, the shorter one does look a bit older to me.  Would also agree about the hips being just a tad more rounded.

My husband and I understand totally. He has been asked twice recently if I am his daughter. And we are only 1 year apart.  He gets dirty looks in public as well and occasionaly told he should be ashamed of himself for messing around with that "girl",lol.
When I was 20 and we were just married, it just so happened that he and our roomate were deployed (US Navy) at the same time. About 2 weeks later, someone knocked on my door.
It was Child Protective Services asking my where my mother was and why was I home alone,ROFL! Someone had actually filed a report with them. I can laugh about it now, but I sure wasn't happy about it then.

Age is very subjective, I don't envy the mods jobs of trying to calculate the age of 3d meshes.

For the OP -- I agree with those who have said that the shorter figure appears to be the older of the two........subjectively speaking, of course.  But they both look like pure fantasy creatures -- they aren't realistic.  So you can claim that they are 3,000 years old if you want to.  Just don't post a nude image of a Maddie character in the gallery and then provide her with a virtual ID card which states that she was born in 3020 BC.  I doubt that it would fly.

I've known short, child-seeming women in my time.  Even dated a couple of them back when.  They looked like china dolls -- devastatingly cute, though.

As a sidenote -- there's a legal issue that arises in the "real world", too.  When models who look like children -- but who aren't -- are used to produce certain types of pictures.

I say "short adult", but there's no way for me to be completely objective....

33yrs old & i  stand 4'9", 105lbs.  Unfortunately, unlike this mesh in question, i wasn't gifted with large boobs so people can make the distinction between "child" and "adult" easier.

when i was pregnant, i couldn't walk around with my dad - he actually had one "concerned" (read nosey) couple call cops on us one day.  (i was 22 - they claimed i was 10 or 11).  The same time frame, i went to a store with my mom - she sent me off to pick up "one more thing" and by the time i waddled back, my mom was about to strangle the cashier, because without any preamble, the cashier had looked at my mom and said "how can you let her walk around like that?  all of 14 years old and pregnant?  and who's the father, her DAD?"

i handed over my ID, which caused the cashier's jaw to drop, and profuse apologies to start spewing forth.

That's just two of the many MANY stories i have where people look at SHORT and see CHILD.

another reason my figures in my images don't usually get resized LOL.

As for your "short adult" - i, too, would recommend wider hips, perhaps a slightly wider waist (not too much, or you lose the womanly shape), and slightly thicker thighs as well.  perhaps a bit more "bottom"?  upper arms are also a place where age shoes.... slightly thicker upper arms might help, too..... perhaps a tiny touch of a belly?  a little less rounding in the facial cheeks, too.... i've noticed for most (shorter) females, the last of the "child-like facial curves" vanishes around the age of 20 or so.... especially if they are one of those blessed women who will always look  "young for her age".  my thoughts on that is that the growth hormone contributes drastically to the aging process, thus shorter people tend to look younger?  but that's beside the point....

im interested in seeing where you go with this short adult, beos - and i have to agree, the princess in arthur and the incredibles was... very loveable =D - and so's your "short adult"

Rarer than a hairy egg and madder than a box of frogs....

Well, I haven't had the difficulty of being mistaken for a child in a very, very long time myself.  I'm 6' 2" and I'm the runt of the litter, most of the men in my family are 6'4" or better.

As to the job of the moderaters deciding what is and isn't a child for the purposes of a 3d rendering, that's one job I don't envy in the slightest.  Renderosity could get in a whole ton of trouble real quick if some overzealous legal type decided to make a huge issue out of a rendering being considered "child" pornography.

Granted, I've never heard of such a legal case but I'm quite sure that Renderosity would not like to be the first to try and defend themselves in court over something like that.  The punishments for such things are usually severe and the determination of what is and isn't legal in this regard is in a pretty big grey area overall, so quite frankly I can see why the moderators would tend to err on the side of extreme caution.

As to the issue of "short adults" in renderings, I've had my best luck with V3 and using the scale dial, scaling her down to about 70-80% and then doing some morphing.  If this doesn't make her "short" enough I just increase the scale on the other items in my render to compensate.   I dislike the proportions that using the "figure height" parameter gives me.

I've dabbled a bit with A3 I can't say as it's ever really been a favorite figure of mine.  Don't get me wrong, I've seen some really fabulous characters that were made for A3 by some of the various vendors here, but personally I've just never had the knack for it.  Every character I've ever tried to create using A3 has just never really turned out quite the way I wanted, I can never get a "realistic" look to an A3 character.  Something is always just a bit.. off.  Not sure if I can really explain it any better than that.

(Please ignore this post - it's just my opinion of some things that may or may not be relevant)

What IS a "short person"?

As far I as I can see, the question is both academic and subjective.
Take the above render. Apologies for crude render; speed of creation ruled.

A. Two Posettes.

One is scaled (globally) relative to the other.
There are no other differences between the two figures apart from some minor pose changes, and the "X-Transition"
So are we looking at:

  • An "average" adult and a midget? (NB - the term "midget" is currently not politically correct, but in this context refers to a "small scale, otherwise normally proportioned human".)
  • An "Average" adult and a giant? (NB - For some reason, giants seem to have no (political) sensitivity about being called "giant". Presumably 'cos they know that they can thump the living daylights out of anyone who uses the term in a derogative manner.)
  • An adult and a child? (NB - Children can be called chidren. It's a Parental right, and doesn't infringe the child's rights until after he/she/it has grown out of childhood. By which time it's too late.)
  • (place your own combination here)

I suspect that most people would opt for (at 1st glance) "an adult and a child".
Why?
Because of the pose. ("Mother is taking daughter out for a walk, isn't that cute?")
BUT! The "child" is Posette at 100% scale. The mother is Posette at (approx) 120% scale.

I used to know a guy who was over 7 ft tall. He was otherwise "normally" proportioned. Without something of known height to give context, you wouldn't know that he was of above average height.
Locally, here in Reading, UK, there's a little Indian lady who is about 4ft 6in. tall, but again "normally" proportioned. Once again, you only notice her size when there's something to put it into context.

B. Two (slightly different) Posettes.

The only difference between A and B is the size of the head of the smaller posette. In B I've scaled the head up a bit.
So now "li'l Posette" actually sort-of looks more childlike.
(Biological side-note: Offspring of most mammalian species are born with nearly full-sized heads; especially full-sized eyes and brain, and therefore the area of the skull surrounding them. Hence the "cutie-tootie" appeal of the young of most species: fawns, calves, puppies, kittens etc. and, of course, of Manga. End side-note)

So, to get back to the original point... What IS a "short person"?
And the simple answer is: It depends.

And I'm not going to start on the differences between fairies, elves, pixies, leprechauns, gnomes, dwarves....'cos I'll quickly run out of time!

Sorry for going on so long, once I started I couldn't stop. Pos(et)ted under extreme time pressure, with lots I didn't have time for...

But anyway....

Cheers,
Diolma

Oh, and before I forget, another subjective point about my previous post..

The pose (holding hands, one figure looking down at the other looking up) seems to re-inforce the "Mother-Daughter" idiom, even in Pic A.

And, no. I won't be putting the pic in my (or any other gallery) anyi time soon. Or later.
Come to think of it, I don't have a gallery here...

Cheers,
Diolma

Edited to add that by posted, i mean posted in gallery.

Short people don't have small heads.  Even people with extreme dwarfism don't have small heads.  So both pics are really wrong on that front.  Children don't really have small heads either, and they never have large breasts in my experience, so neither pic looks much like a child either.  Both pics appear to have some being with odd, non-human proportions.  ^_^

Why don't you just scale down the V4 or V3 to make a short looking woman who cannot be confused with being childlike. Just keep the face looking mature clearly.

The thing with human size is that shorter people are generally still in proportion.  That does not mean that they are "to scale".  My mother is 5'1", and I am 5'10".  She is not my shape, only shorter.  Her head and mine are similar shapes, our wrists are the same circumference and so are our knees; our legs are in the same proportion to our torsos, as well as our arms, and our feet are the exact length from the crook of our elbow to our wrists. She appears to have a slightly larger hip circumference, but in actuality, the proportion of her hip/waist/chest is the same percentage as mine.  So, she will always have a slightly larger-looking hip circumference, and a smaller-looking waist circumference.

What I'd do is do as much studying of short people as possible.  Look on the 'net for pictures, go to the library.  If your family and friends don't find you weird, ask them for their opinion on where to look for info.

I don't get the impression that the Posette on the right is short; rather I get the impression that the Posette on the left is a giantess.  In fact, I believe that this is a scene from an old scifi/horror movie -- the Posette on the left is the wife / daughter / fiancee / niece of a mad scientist.  The mad scientist has developed a growth formula which she drank by mistake / exposed her to unknown radiation by accident / shocked her with electricity when she fell into the equipment in the mad scientist's laboratory as the mad scientist's ugly assistant struggled with her dashing, heroic boyfriend.

And now: the Amazing Giant Woman is preparing to go on a mindless rampage.  The Posette on the right is to be her first victim.......probably a fashion rival that she doesn't like -- because her hated rival is always upstaging her by wearing the same outfits that she does all of the time.

The true nature of the situation hasn't quite registered with the normal-sized Posette yet.  She's only just noticed that someone has grabbed her by the hand, and she's just looked back over her shoulder to see who it could be.  The unfriendly but grinning-with-malice giantess is about to take her revenge by throwing her hapless rival into a public swimming pool -- a truly awful fate.

So, no......the image doesn't say "mother and child" to me.
