geep ( ) posted Sat, 02 February 2002 at 3:12 AM

When I see enough of these with the SAME NAME, I just delete 'em from my email and don't even go there. So, if the intention was to get attention, it has the exact opposite effect with me. I just put 'em on my "ignore" list. Ever hear 'bout "The Little Boy That Cried Wolf?" (rehtorical) ;=]

Yeah, sometimes things dont turn out as expected :-) Just often it have surprised me how many deleted messages a new product need before the one who post get it right and is satisfied...stranges that people dont use the preview-bottom ;-)

Routledge ( ) posted Sat, 02 February 2002 at 4:21 AM

Good point, Im guilty of a couple myself. As a forum newbie the one time I did preview I lost the original message, so have avoided it since. I didnt think about notifications to others, as I turned that option off. Something to remember.

Skygirl ( ) posted Sat, 02 February 2002 at 4:50 AM

He he, you lost your original messages !!! Happens sometimes here...esp if you have written A LOT...at least thats how I feel :-) To me it often happens that Im kicked off line the second I wanna post this VERY long thing Ive just written and gone it is LOL...

ronknights ( ) posted Sat, 02 February 2002 at 7:31 AM

I know this is going to irritate you, but I'll say it anyway. "I prefer not to use or to read the word p*ss" in public forums." I do believe there is a more intelligent and acceptable alternate word. Ron

movida ( ) posted Sat, 02 February 2002 at 7:40 AM

Hi geep, you didn't piss me off, I rarely post anyway :)

welcomesite ( ) posted Sat, 02 February 2002 at 7:53 AM

Aren't you being a bit prissy Ron? You're entitled to your feelings.. but to suggest that the entire world reduce their vocabulary, to please you, is selfish. The word piss is an extremely popular and very descriptive word that has gained acceptance, even by the FCC. This ain't no Sunday School Forum.

Barbarellany ( ) posted Sat, 02 February 2002 at 8:21 AM

I don't know if I agree on that. Respect for others should play a part in how we speak. Though ps is quite common in our language, I remember my mom requesting we didn't use this word. Bch is also allowed by the FCC as anyone who watches prime time TV knows, rarely to decribe a female dog. I am offended that such a demeaning word toward women is okay and mainstream. Here at the forums, if you know a word disturbs someone, why should it be such an issue to refrain from using it? Little efforts like this can actually be the beginings to more peaceful relations between people. A simple request that requires so little from others should not be trashed just because your opinion differs. Ron, I will try to remember not to use that word. Also, preview often sends the entire message to the netherworlds, so I tend to skip it. Maybe a spellcheck here would be nice.

welcomesite ( ) posted Sat, 02 February 2002 at 8:27 AM

Insidious methods, such as saying; "A little request that requires so little" are among the most despicable methods of imposing your will upon others. All adults are supposed to abandon their chosen methods of communication because your Mom didn't want her kids saying a certain word? What a bunch of fucking bullshit. (how'd you like that?)

ronknights ( ) posted Sat, 02 February 2002 at 8:30 AM

Thanks Barbara. Let me say this. The decision to use the word P*ss is related more to using "socially acceptable language," rather than whether or not to please me. One thing I learned growing up is that some language just is not acceptable in a normal social situation, especially with mixed company. That lesson became a bit harder after my experience with the military. In my Army training, they encouraged us to use four letter words, and sing them in songs, loudly. When I returned to civilian life, I had to remember that I was in "the real world again," and had to remember not to swear. Beyond what I already said, I must say that many people use "4-letter words" because they either lack the intelligence, or can't be bothered to use other words. You can choose which explanation applies to you. Ron

welcomesite ( ) posted Sat, 02 February 2002 at 8:35 AM

I choose to reject both 'explanations' and place myself amongst those who use 4 letter words because we are not afraid of words. They are just letters and sounds that WE have made up and given meaning to. Being afraid of them and attempting to impose these fears on others is laughable.

Lemurtek ( ) posted Sat, 02 February 2002 at 8:39 AM

"I wanna say Piss and you can't make me stop." You can imagine the image I have in my mind right now. I've had my laugh at that one. Some people will continue to have potty mouths till they can no longer speak. "It's enough to piss off the pope." That's the end of my part in this fruitless conversation. Ron

pzrite ( ) posted Sat, 02 February 2002 at 9:10 AM

Ron, I agree with you to a certain point. I'm guessing you are around my age (in your 30's or 40's) But I'm afraid times change and unfortunately family and social values are going down the crapper. I agree that cursing in public is still socially unacceptable, but there are certain words that are gaining widespread acceptance and there is nothing you or I can do to change that. Television is (again very unfortunately) a mirror of society. And society has come a LONG way in defining what's acceptable. Remember in the old TV shows, you couldn't have a married couple shown in bed together? Or you couldn't even show a woman's bellybutton? Nowadays, you get to see Allie McBeal french kissing another woman! I'm afraid I've learned to go with the flow. My 6 year old son says things that I would have got slapped for when I was that age, including the words butt, jerk and snot. So back to the word "piss"..... I think the refined older folks here in the forum would prefer not to read these types of words. While others see it as a standard part of todays vocabulary. Who's right? I think both sides are right. The evidence is the previous postings and strong opinions on both sides. (much like the abortion issue) The one thing that we CAN agree on is that everyone is entitled to their opinion and there is no need to get nasty because your opinion differs. Ron very politely stated that he was offended by that word, and he got a lot of hostile replies. While you may not agree with him and will continue using the word piss, you SHOULD allow him his opinion and not bash him for speaking his mind.

welcomesite ( ) posted Sat, 02 February 2002 at 9:22 AM

I stated that I believe in his right to feel however he wishes. I'll go so far as to say that Ron and Barbarellany are probably nicer people than me. I'm not condemning 'them'. I'm expressing my disdain for the idea of there being a new set of rules, such as they advocate. You say; "You should allow him his opinion" That is true.. but it does not extend to succumbing to his demands that my right to express myself according to the established mores of this community should change and conform to his unrealistic standards. Adult language is common at this forum and doesn't violate it's rules. There are forums available where language is censored, if that is what you want.

FaerieGurl ( ) posted Sat, 02 February 2002 at 9:36 AM

I can't understand how it is that in a place where it is acceptable to post pictures of women groping (sp?)themselves that it is unacceptable to use the word piss. I think as adults everyone should understand that people are going to say things they may not like. I think they should either be mature about it by ignoring it, or piss off... and that's MY .02 :p Cookie

I can't resist one more parting shot. In the 60's I, and other idealistic people believed we were fighting for a cause of Freedom, and a better world. We were against racism, oppression and so many other bad thngs. We advocated freedom of speech. We really felt we had a vision of something worth working and fighting for. Yes, times have changed. The very idea of someone claiming Freedom of Speech when using a word that denotes a base bodily function, and a possible way to degrade someone or something, is absurd. ("piss on this,") I have to go. My wife beckons, grin Ron

melanie ( ) posted Sat, 02 February 2002 at 10:10 AM

Actually, I'm not really offended by the word p*ss, however, every time I hear it anywhere, it somewhat nauseates me, because it is generally a reference to a body fluid that I don't care to think about. Yuck! It's not offensive as much as it is disgusting. I prefer not to use slang words that refer to body fluids or excrements. Especially, while I'm eating. ;) Melanie

Welcome, youre right: theyre just words, and we shouldnt fear words. I have to listen to derogatives like fag, queer, and the like every day, and they no longer carry any of the impact they once did. But yesterday I was in line at the bank. Ahead of me was this guy -- about 19 or 20 -- talking on his cel phone. Behind me was an elderly lady about 70. The "gentleman" was saying, "S*** that! F*** that!" at just about every turn, and you could tell that, for him, it was no big deal. However, the poor woman behind me, who probably would have prefered not to hear such language, was becoming more and more uncomfortable. So, I said something. He was appropriately embarrassed. We had a good laugh, and that was it. He continued his conversation but was a little more careful about what he said, out of deference to the woman behind me. Now Im sure that once he got outside, he went back to his F*** this/S*** that way of talking, so it wasnt like anyone was restraining him. But he realized, as we all should sometimes, that theres a difference between freedom of speech and simple good manners. And good manners never hurt anyone. As for the original message (or, as Dame Anna would say, "Remember the Ring?"), its my understanding that some people have been having connection problems with Rsity of late. Perhaps this is part of it?

But if this is so I like to add that I am one from the older folks that is not offended if someone says/writes ps or fk or something like that nor am I offended seeing Ally McBeal kissing another woman.

welcomesite ( ) posted Sat, 02 February 2002 at 12:02 PM

Taking all these points into consideration.. is it better to 'protect' a child from certain words, risking that they might feel discomfort later in life, in the Army, on message boards, in a bank, or elsewhere.. or is it better to explain to our children that 'curse words' are just things that people use to emphasize their speech.. and that they only have as much power as we choose to give them?

The selected verbage was deliberately employed in an attempt to arouse the maximum curiosity such that people would notice and view the posting.

Written words are not the same as spoken ones. The reader has control of what he reads, so it is a far different situation to read words that you find offensive than to be subjected to an oral tirade. I detest it when someone (usauly young man)is allowing four letter words to flow from his/her mouth like water over Niagra falls, in public, especially in front of my kids. But reading in a forum is not the same thing at all. I, the reader, have control over what I read. If I get offended at the language my eye sees, then I look elsewhere.{If I do not want to see Barney, then I know not to read any post by Rad :-) } Another point about forum-speak, is that the conversants have to make themselves understood in a conversation without body language, facial expressions, or writing a tome. Strong language can be a tool to cut to the chase, so to speak :-) As to the original post, yep, I have lost posts via the the preview feature also. I often run longer replies through a spellchecker instead, but most of the time that is too much trouble. pam

geep ( ) posted Sat, 02 February 2002 at 12:12 PM

Words do have meaning. To "piss-off" someone conveys a generally accepted meaning that is still subtly different than merely "irritate". Same goes for the usage of most "curse" words.

In a communication medium with less contextual feedback than a normal face to face conversation, being precise does have its advantages.

welcomesite ( ) posted Sat, 02 February 2002 at 12:47 PM

There can't be many words that have taken on as many different meanings as the word 'fuck'.

  • You just won the lottery / "Fuck!"
  • There are red and blue lights in your rearview mirror / "Fuck!"
  • Someone jumps out from behind a tree and scares you / "Fuck!"
  • Joe told Peggy Sue that you cheated on her / "That Fuck!"
  • Sorry, you'll have to resubmit all the forms / "Fuck it!"

All different specific meanings, that have nothing to do with sex. Look how many computer programs or devices steal existing names. We re-use words and often 4 letter words are called upon to fill the void.

welcomesite ( ) posted Sat, 02 February 2002 at 12:54 PM

2 points about the 'preview' button... If you're going to use it... First click and drag your mouse over your post to highlight it, then right click and save it. Another malfunction of the preview, at least on my browser, is that when you start a thread, if you preview and then post it, it will not display the 'caption' that you select for the link that you embed in the post. It will just show the link itself, spelled out. To insure that your caption is recorded, use your back button and click the 'post reply' button that you originally bypassed, to use the 'preview post' button.

"The very idea of someone claiming Freedom of Speech when using a word that denotes a base bodily function, and a possible way to degrade someone or something, is absurd." ROFLMAO.... but that is exactly the point of Freedom of Speech is it not? The right to say things that are not popular or that the masses consider absurd? Anyway I do see your point Ron, but as long as long as it isn't against the TOS for the site, I don't have a real objection to language her on Renderosity. On one of the forums I administrate we have a social rule of no curses in the subject line but once in the actual body its is anything goes. Maybe people can police themselves to something like that here :)

ScottA ( ) posted Sat, 02 February 2002 at 12:59 PM

Just kidding. :-) But I seriously think we need to end this thread. Although it's way OT. I won't lock it unless people refuse to drop it. FYI: I don't really mind OT topics here once in a while. As long as they are limited. And nobody's calling eachother names (Yes...telling someone to grow up is "name calling"). If this had been posted to C&D. You would have seen a lot more colorful words than "piss" get thrown around. I'm not going to clamp down with an iron fist about OT stuff. Unless you folks get out of hand with it. So Let's please try to limit how far we go with them. I'd like to keep this place as free from me as possible ;-) Thanks, ScottA

ronknights ( ) posted Sat, 02 February 2002 at 1:19 PM

Scott, your interpretation of name calling is innacurate. Anyone studying psychology will know there is a difference between finding issue with someone's behavior, and condemning the person. Indeed, someone who learns that distinction will have achieved a significant goal that makes getting along in life much easier. Beyond that, Freedom of Speech has been overly abused. It does not mean you have the right to yell "Fire" in a crowded theater. It does not mean you have the right to offend others with vulgarity. A wise man once said "With Freedom comes Responsibility." That is the step beyond the rhetoric which many people have trouble remembering. With regards to off-topic threads, there are many that you have not spoken about. And we've all gotten along just fine participating in them. On the other hand, if you're objecting to the disagreement here, I understand that. Either way I will not fight you. I've had my say, and been understood by many. That is a civilized conversation. I will continue to object to anyone who uses 4-letters words. I will state my piece, then move on. Ron

ScottA ( ) posted Sat, 02 February 2002 at 1:30 PM

It's not an interpretation. It's the way it is ;-) What I mean is. If someone says to someone else on this forum "Oh grow up". I'll consider that a improper behavior for this forum. And I'll take the appropriet measures (just a warning at first)to correct that. As I've said before (and I'll probaly say it again) There will no arguing on this forum PERIOD. ScottA

I swear, Im sending everyone here a copy of Miss Manners latest book for Christmas... =) Seriously, it is pretty sad when we claim freedom of speech just so we can be rude in public. I found it a little ironic, way up there in the thread, when someone wrote words to the effect of "When you tell me not to use words like that, youre imposing your values on me, and thats wrong!" I gather this same soul forgets that when he/she does things that makes others feel uncomfortable, then his/her values are being the ones imposed. To be blunt, I dont give a fuck what anyone writes =), as long as its done with some sense of respect for others. Now, dont make me stop this car again...
