Did you really mean volumetric material, or material with alpha channel, showing the transparent bits in volumetric lighting? If so, it's not only a Vue artifact, same thing happens with Cinema 4D's fantastic, beautiful, ultra photorealistic, state of the art Advanced Renderer.

Terragen is a fantastic start, it was responsible for my interest in 3d, jsut like lingrif!

Yes there are books about this, but first you need to know what you want to do in CG ( computer graphics), if you ant to do landscaping, then Vue is for you, and so is terragen, which comes as a freeware, so you can play with it and see for yourself if you want to go further, Vue is also fantastic, but it's not free, and there are no books, and then you have Bryce, which is similar to older versions of Vue, and there are books about Bryce, you can even find older Bryce versions for free. If it's more about general 3D, more focused on modelling, architecture, design and visualization, you'll need high end expensive software, difficult to master but very interesting, like Cinema4D, Maya and 3DS Max. They all have books about them, and there are freeware versions of Cinema 4D ( fully founctionnal older version) & Maya (up to date version, limited in functions and renders are watermarked.) Hope this helped.

Ecosystems are instances alright, but I don't think you can use wind on them, since they are considered a material of the underlying terrain/object. Would be great though if you could use wind on thousand of instanced trees.

Oh, I tried it too, and same problem, but it seems that if you use the clip slider in the terrain editor, you should be able to get something decent.

From this screenshot, it seems you used the terrain editor to import your DEM. The manual says you should import it with the import object menu.
Thread: Ok, what video cards do you guys have? | Forum: Vue
Ndivia 6800 GT, with Vue5I, works swell, worked ok too with Vue5 Esprit and Pro Studio. Vue4 only worked in wireframe with my previous card, an ATI Radeon 9200 SE, but it was just the demo, so I wouldn't know.
Thread: How are you getting your trees so detailed? | Forum: Vue
I haven't tried it, but I think that only the renders are watermarked, I don't think they can watermark objects. As I understand it, the software is fully functionnal, which means you can do everything within the app, only the renders are limited in size and watermarked.

There are also lots of free plant models around, again check the backroom. If you use XFrog you'll soon be able to make those wonderfully detailed veggies too! The problem with the free 3.02 version, is that it can't export directly in a format Vue can read. I had the same version before upgrading to v3.5 ( this one exports in all major formats). With v3.02, you need another 3D app like Maya, lightwave or Max. As these softwares don't come cheap, you can use educational versions of Maya & Lightwave, they are fully functionnal, so you can import your xfr files into them, with the free Xfrog plug ins, and export them in lwo or obj. Then import those files in Vue.

Also, did you try E-on's tech support? Write them an e-mail and tell them excatly what happens, and they might come up with a solution, they're verfy helpful.

To get realistic terrins, you need to experiment with procedural terrains. It's not very well explained in the manual, I must say. Check the Vue backroom here at RDR, there are some tutorials about proc terrains.
