I don't recall ever having been reprimanded either... I was "Locked Out" from the mods forum once way back when, but then again, so was "almost" every other staff member at the time.

I'd be curious to know what my member record says.... It's probably an ink blot, or  reads like some cryptic , unrecognizable hieroglyphics, or something.

But I couldn't agree with you more Sir- Bones-allot.

There is a right way...and a wrong way to raise hell, and I usually have the wisdom to know the difference, but I have let myself come extremely close to that line before.

But...I think it might be more "Experience" rather than "Wisdom" though.

Us old timers have seen what pitfalls to avoid, and discovered (sometimes clever) workarounds for those areas over a period of several years. Some newer members ( who may have come from other sites, with different rules) may not know the pitfalls of Renderos-engard.

Although most things are covered in that ever-changing document we all lovingly know as the "TOS"...Who actually READS all of that before signing up?

I'd wager a few do,... but most only get around to it at they're leisure, or if they have been pointed to it for some reason.( And then only read that part of it)

I confess, I've only ready bits and pieces of the TOS here at Renderosity. (Hell... I helped Write the TOS at another site and if you think reading them is a yawn-fest...try writing one...lol)

Anyway....The TOS that exists now, is not the one I agreed to when I signed up, It's ,as I mentioned, "ever changing", and needs to be updated and modified as time (and technology) changes.

The staff usually make a good effort to let it be known when there is a modification of it. But in the end, it's MY responsibility to read, understand, and follow the guidelines outlined within it.

As far as images go...well..I don't post many images anymore so I'm pretty safe there.

I think it all comes down to common sense.

"If I post this potentially controversial image/post, what are the possible repercussions?"

If you are asking that question, there are several things you could do:

Alternatives to just throwing caution to the wind, and posting it are:

1)Send it to the staff first and ask if it falls within the acceptable image guidelines (TOS)

(If it does not, you have the option to modify it in such a way that it does fall within the acceptable image guidelines)

  1. Post it somewhere else that allows such imagery

  1. Get your own domain/ hosting (Website) and post it there. (And pay for all that is involved with this option)

  1. Do not post it at all, and savor all the joy of said masterpiece, and keep it to yourself.

  1. Delete it and never approach a commuter again...lol (That was joke...I say... that was a joke son...)

Are those guidelines blurry lines?

Yes, they can be for some, but clear as glass to others.(which this threadom clearly illustrates)

Which is why, if you are unsure....ASK!

Which of the following causes members as well as staff more problems?

To ask first?

Or

Beg for forgiveness later?

I read something disturbing today

Games in Germany already face strict censorship laws--titles such as Gears of War are deemed to be too violent, and the German board of classification (the Unterhaltungssoftware Selbskontrolle) refuses to give them a rating, effectively meaning that the games can be sold only at adults-only retailers.

Nazi symbols are also banned in the country, except for art and educational purposes--so games which use them, including the Wolfenstein series, are also banned from being released in Germany. Even games such as Dead Rising are regarded as crossing a threshold of acceptability since violence towards zombies is considered to be too close to violence towards real people.

Legislation currently being drafted would take these standards a step further. The bill, which was introduced last week by the states of Bavaria and Lower Saxony, proposes a new offence. Those found guilty of "cruel violence on humans or human-looking characters" could face fines, or jail time of up to 12 months--and those it applies to include developers, retailers, and consumers, reports UK newspaper The Guardian.

The proposed legislation makes the future for German game companies unclear. One company, Far Cry and Crysis developer Crytek, has already made known its plans to relocate to another country should the any legislation of this kind be made law.

Talk about a rough TOS.

Talent is God's gift to you. Using it is your gift to God.

Hah!   Tom provides an opportunity to divert this megathread.

Orlando Bloom as an elf didn't work. Too soppy.

Hugo Weaving (a fine actor) was too close, timewise, to Agent Smith to be a convincing Elrond (but probably far enough away from Priscilla Queen of the Desert).

Somebody has surely sabotaged the LOTR Wiki page (see pic).

"As far as images go...well..I don't post many images anymore so I'm pretty safe there." ~Hawkfyr

**Thankyou.  I needed a good laugh.  And I actually think you offered some sound advice in regard to posting images you think are questionable.

As has been pointed out previously, however, and by more then one person, many have posted images in good faith, believing they did not violate the TOS in any way and the images were then removed after subjective evaluations.

There is an analogy I think that fits this rather well, taken from an old Western movie called Unforgiven.  In one of the final scenes of the movie, the corrupt sherriff (Hackman) who lies dying on the floor after being shot laments, "I don't deserve this...I was building a house..."  (If you see the film you'll understand the last part of that).  The response by Will Money (Eastwood) is I think rather appropiate to what happened here during the May Purge.  "Deserve's got nuthin' To do with it."

We didn't have a "May purge" not sure where that "tale" came from, LOL..

But I'll repeat its the members responsibility to adhere to the TOS. Since we don't ban on a whim, the member is well aware before it gets to a permanent ban status that they are on the edge. So at that point if I were them and wanted to stay an active member within the guidelines then I would be having anything that could be questionable reviewed by staff beforehand (as we suggest when communicating and educating).

The May Purge is my way of refering to the artists who were banned from the site at about that time give or take a few months before and after that period.  I am given to understand that they were quite numerous both in terms of image removal, warnings, temp and or perminant bans during that time period.

As I think has been pointed out more then once during this thread the problem with what you have said here:

"I would be having anything that could be questionable reviewed by staff beforehand (as we suggest when communicating and educating)."

Is that some artists are not purposly uploading material they think is questionable.  So while they may have/are submiting images to you in advance of actually posting them to the galleries that they think might be called into question, they may once again be uploading an image or images in good faith honestly believing that is both withen TOS guidlines and will not be in any way shape or form be viewed as being objectionable.

I am aware there are those who have simply made the choice to stand behind their artistic styles and cast their fortions good or bad to the fates.  I also have seen artist's work removed and the artists punished for posting in honest good faith.

In addition to that I've seen some, paticularly those effected by some of the issues to hand such as what and what does not constitute "underage" or "potentially underage" or "objectionable" become so frustrated by after continuely seeking clarrifcation and guidence and not recieving any real solid and comphresive guidlines specific to their styles simply thrown in the towel and either gone to other sites or started to render again according to their own standards in that regard.

This makes me very sad.

Throughout this thread when people have asked for some more specific clarity, usually in regard to the different anime characters but also in regard to several others the general response has been that each image will be judged individualy.  But this can make it difficult.

Quite honestly the only real realistic sulution for anyone treading water right now seems to very simply be to submit each and every render regardless of weather the artist thinks it does or does not fall into full compliance to the staff for approval or disapproval.  That means everything, not just something for example with a nude A3.

That's really the only solution that will absulutly postivily garenty that under no circumstances will the artist ever submit an image to the galleries that might get them in trouble under the current conditions.  And I do mean everything regardless of nudity, violence, or neither of the aformentioned.  The artist must submit everything... EVERYTHING... that they do to the staff for pre-posting evaluation.  Everything.

That is at the current time the most solid garentee that an artist will never ever find themselves in trouble with images posted ever.

Can you imagion? If every picture in every gallery in the entire site was e-mailed first for approval?  Of course, it will never happen but can you just imagion it?  Gives me a good giggle or two to think of it and the possible results.

Here's an example. At one time, I wanted to do a Norman Rockwellish picture. It would have been an old fashioned kitchen with a cookie jar on the counter and a naked little boy stretching to try to reach up to get the cookie jar. Innocent enough, of course, and certainly not anything anyone would object to. All you'd see would be the butt. But, technically, it would violate the TOS. So I never did the picture. No, I don't think it would have caused a problem, but why take the chance.

On a purely off track but fun note I have to say I'm very much enjoying all the wonderfull pictures of the little animals involved in various shinanigans up.  It's provided a welcome respite from some of the hard debate.  I think the image Captain Jack posted of the little kitten all curled up beneath the covers one tiny paw firmly clutching her little cat plushie protectivly is especially adorable.

Oh and Hawkfyr just so there's no confusion I wasn't laughing at you about not posting that many images, but at the situation just to clarrify.  In otherwords the other sure way not to violate the TOS with images is to simply not post any images at all which struck me as funny in an ironic sort of way.  ^^

Kitty quietly walked in the building through a door left half open by a lazy janatorial worker.  Kitty looked left and then right...a mouse scurried across the floor.  Kitty licked her lips and thought how sastisfying the meal would be, but then quickly shook it's head from left to right  and focused on the mission at hand.

Kitty had been trained to do this all her life, but now she had doubts.  Deep, powerful thoughts, but then she remembered the terrible name they called her "Mittens".  She looked down the hall and saw a large garbage can in the corner by the boiler, a smile (or what could be considered a smile by a cat) came over her face.  She slowly walked over to the can, attempting to mute the sound of the damned bell around her neck.

Ten minutes later, Kitty left the building the same way she came in and went across the street.  Fear came over her as some children passed by her.   She hated human children, they would pet her roughly with their dirty, dirty hands.  She sighed a quiet sigh of relief as the boys passed by her only to gulp down hard as a woman with a stroller stopped beside her.

The child in stroller gurgled upon noticing Kitty patiently looking at the building and begun stroking Kitty hard.  Kitty kept her eyes trained on the building surpressing the urge to scratch the child.

BOOM!

The building blew up and the child started to scream.  Kitty smiled and thought, "yeah, yeah big noise make grubby hands cry..." she stopped in mid thought as she saw the same mouse she had spied earlier scurry outside the now burning building.  It was a good day to be Kitty.

**"for a guy who wears a bandana and shows pics of soldiers interogating little kittens you can be a long tounged arse licker at times tom ..lmao after reading this i'm tempted to join a monkdom"**

lol...yeah...but even that illustrates my "experience" point.

It's been my experience that,...short declarations, leave more room for misinterpretation.

So in the interest of clarity,...taking a few extra moments to say what I mean, and NOT say what I don't mean, leaves less room for misinterpretation.( the degree of specifics fluctuate depending on the nature of the discussion though)

I suppose its the "Us against Them" mentality, that has become the environment here, and as one who has seen the landscape from both sides, I suppose it's difficult at time for me to be completely unbiased. But I really do try...

"Here's an example. At one time, I wanted to do a Norman Rockwellish picture. This raises a very interesting point,

What is the  "motive" of the artist?

Is it to satisfy his or her creative needs or expression?

Or is it to post cool stuff on a website in hopes of kudos' from others?

[Or both?]

It saddens me Boney, to read "So I Never Did The Picture".  It's not unlike saying "Rosity is stunting my creativity because of the TOS"

In my lengthy post above (which looks like is happening again) I mentioned the alternative of "Keeping it for yourself" as an option. (Creative Workaround)

OR...if the bare butt "Makes or Breaks" the image, and "Must" included... perhaps you could make 2 versions...one clothed (for posting here) and one unclothed for yourself.

But to not do it at all, does not seem like an option, (unless the inspiration has long passed, and you really just don't want to do it anymore) I happen to think it's a great concept for an image.

Thanks Crimson Desire,

No confusion

Actually, My images are more tests, rather than works of art. When I get around to something "Gallery Worthy" I'll post it.

Actually I post more of my work in the forums than I do in the galleries.( and some others work as well for parody's sake)

Regarding you other comment(s)

"Can you imagion? If every picture in every gallery in the entire site was e-mailed first for approval?  Of course, it will never happen but can you just imagion it?  Gives me a good giggle or two to think of it and the possible results."

I see your point, in that "where does it stop?" when submitting images for approval. But all I can fall back on is that it comes down to common sense,

Out of the thousands of images posted in the galleries, only a relatively small amount get pulled, and many times, are of the same artists.

One only has to look at the remaining thousands that do not get pulled as a barometer of what is, and what is not acceptable.

The suggestion to submit images to the staff, was for potentially controversial images. If one cant take the time to look at the remaining acceptable art, and pushes the responsibility off on the staff by suggesting a change in the TOS is the solution, well...that's just plain irresponsible IMO.

Thousands of others successfully do it every day

Gee Tom, had you chimed in and said this 587 posts ago, this thread would be on Page 8 by now.

To me , it's all interpretation and perception...what does the viewer percieve in the image to report it, and how does the mod team evaluate it.  What is used as a benchmark?  A biology book?  Personal feelings?...personal perceptions?  At what point do the mods assimilate into one mind during reported image review and come to a conclusion?  Or is it simply a matter of majority vote?  Take this recently uploaded image as an example...

http://www.renderosity.com/mod/gallery/index.php?image_id=1345391

Now to me, she looks to be 14-16 years of age, to another she may look to be 24.

There are thousands of members that upload to the gallery everyday and adhere to the guidelines that they agreed to, so it really can be done..  Whether or not a member chooses to adhere to the guidelines is their decision.

What is the "Motive" of the artist?

Is it to satisfy a creative urge?

Is it to post images in the expectation of Kudos'?

Offhand I'd say that well over 50% of the images posted here are more for the Kudos thing, and probably another 25% are to show the rest of the world how clever one has been with the latest character/pose/light set he/she bought from here.

No doubt the "creative urge" is alive and well, but for some people, pushing the envelope might be an important part of that.

But, hey, it's all good, and they (Renderosity) can do what they want, far as I'm concerned. If I were running a digital art site catering mostly to the world of Poser, I probably wouldn't allow 90% of the stuff they allow, including my own stuff. 😉

Waittaminit.

I happen to be the center of the universe.  I have a t-shirt that proves it.

Great, now I'm staring. :blushing:

I'll re-check my calculations; perhaps there's a cosmological theory of multiple universes that will solve the problem...

pushing the edge....

  • Don't do that...the world is flat, you'll fall off the edge*
The Earth is the center of the universe
There is probably most likely almost certain but please don't quote me weapons of mass destruction in Iraq

kudo's....
post nekkid pictures of big boob vicky
give above vicky sword and really sultty look
ya' gotta go with the temple

If you ever go in the Anime gallery or you post there, you'll see you're not posting for kudos...you're posting there for fun,  you want kudo's...Fanstasy, pin up, are the galleries to post in.

One, two three you're out.  It's clear but...let's say you posted something stupid when you joined in 2003....in 2004 unintentional, 2006 unintentional different from your last one oopsy....uh oh...damn you're gone.  Although I know the mods have allowed foul balls and members were allowed 4 times...but still the same type of situation can occurr.  I believe in the TOS (still muddy) but there need to be some type of statue of limitations...someone posting something that is malicious or can't be mistaken as violating the TOS...yes give them the big rubber boot.  A nekkid picture of the Girl, then a nekkid picture of Aiko, then a picture of Aiko or the Girl in something sheer...

It's like giving a jay walker the same sentence as the armed robber.  Yes, they both broke the law...but I'll be damned if it's my third offense for jay walking and I'm sitting in a cell with Big (and I don't mean height) Smiling Jim for the next 20 years because I'm a repeat offender.

Oh and as far as the center of the universe, at work I go by, there is only one "I" in Marine Corps...and that "I" is me.

Aw, shucks... t'warn't nuthin' that anybody with a knowledge of multi-layer paint programs, a decent GIF animation package, and a complete lack of respect for working on the projects he's actually being employed to do couldn't have accomplished.

Which, of course, was at one time the worst type of liberal heresy imaginable.

Waitaminnit?

So are you saying that the Earth IS NOT the center of the universe?

It must be...because JenX is the center of the Universe, and as far as I know, she lives here on Earth.

I only visit Earth once in a while.

I could tell you where I live...................but then I'd have to kill you.  A few times.  And maybe eat your soul.

Is that good with barbecue sauce? And a side of onion rings? I only ask 'cause I really like stuff with barbecue sauce and onion rings. 😄

It's a personal thing.  Personally, I prefer deep-fried jalapenos as a side, and usually season my soul with horseradish. ;)

Hey, we can't have that... how 'bout we make you some nice grilled filet of soul, with the butter on the side? I'll keep some antacids ready just in case. Nobody misses the party while I'm around...

Kitty was ready again.  He hopped on top the kitchen counter..."mmmm deep fried jalepeno's" he thought.  The only problem was how to get them, since they were across the room over by the owner's computer.

It took 15 to creep over to the computer then he felt a yank, he closed his eyes and could feel himself spinning round and round.  After the second revolution (his best guess) he opened his eyes...he knew it!

Even tho' he had tried to ignore them, there they were, the center of the universe, clothed in black with some type of human writing on them...he didn't understand why but he had figured out the key to controlling human was boobs.

Weird he silently thought to himself since human females only had two..how could the feed their litters?
