No wonder, just look at game boxes and the requirements for the games
XP: 512MByte
Vista: 1GByte
An operating system should be a platform for applications and leave resources for them.
Thread: OT - if you are going to install XP 64, there's something that you should know - | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
I run Carrara 6 Pro, Poser 7, Cinema 4D, Xfrog, Photoshop CS2 and other tools under x64 without any problems coming from x64. Unfortunately I only have an old Cinema4D version, which is not 64bit.
Vista is a no-go for me as it is today. Memory consuming, without any benefits for me. I only hope that x64 will be supported for some time in the future.

I was warned by a friend about ATI drivers. So I decided to go nVidia especially when using x64. XP is a very stable operating system and most of the problems come from not well tested drivers. Traditionally x32 drivers are well tested, whereas x64 drivers have a much smaller user base and so one must be really careful about the PC components. Best thing is to have a dual boot system. If you experience a similar problem in x32 and x64 than it may be a hardware or application problem, but you never can be sure ;-)

Great to hear that you got it to work properly. I installed x64 last February on my new PC and checked first that there are drivers available for all hardware items I have. It installed quite fast after installing a floppy drive for the RAID driver. Unfortunately the driver cannot be located on a USB stick.
It didn't take long to install x64 though and I also saw some perormance improvments for x32 applications. One reason may be that x64 provides a virtual address space of 2 GByte for each 32bit application. So no swapping is needed, when 2 applications run in parallel.
Finally I found two minor drawbacks. Nero6 doesn't work, but according to Ahead Nero will work from version 7 on. There is no DVD-RAM packet driver available formy system, but I can live with that.
I really like x64, even with the 32bit applications.

Glad you are happy with Vista. So many people have troubles with this OS. So I decided to go with XP Pro x64 and this is remarkably stable. I really can recommend it, though you have to take care, that you get drivers for all your devices.

People want to make art (good or bad, doesn't matter). There is a lot of pre-made content out there and there is need for an application that can help in the process. For a long time Poser was almost the only application for a reasonable price, that solved the problem. Now we have D|S and with Carrara 6 and a constantly improving native importer, it becomes more and more an alternative.
Still a lot of contant is specially made for Poser and very easy to use with it. A lot of poeple use Poser at the beginning of their workflow. Firefly is a nice render engine, but it certainly has its limitation compared to other midranged application like Vue Esprit or Carrara.
Thus IMHO Poser should go the integration way. It will never be a full range application, but it has its strength in working with Poser content. Stability, Performance and a Plug-In system support is certainly an issue. An overhaul for the GUI is also most wanted. There is a market for Poser 8 and I'm really curious how it will look like.

I have no idea, where all this leads to. I just watch it from the shore. In the end there is need for a program that is able to handle Poser content. Poser can do that in the best way. Daz Studio and Carrara 6 try to handle it too, although with different success so far. Don't know of Vue's capabilities in this respect.
Anyway. Poser will live on as long as there is no full replacement for posing and morphing Poser content. E-Frontier did manage to develop Poser 6/7, so let's set some trust into Smith Micro. I doubt that Poser ever will become an A application, but it will have it's place at the beginning of some production lines...

Looks great. Seems Daz will earn my trust again. Hopefully they also will release a 64bit version of C6.
Thread: Windows Vista 64 and Carrara 5 Pro | Forum: Carrara
Well, C5 Pro runs fine on my Windows XP Pro x64 for about half a year now. As x64 runs it in 32bit virtual mode, it really gets a lot of memory from my installed 4 Gig. Love it and hope C6 comes in a 64bit version too.

Well, I'm considering to get the application, but it is a certain amount of money and I would love to see a full critical review. So I thank you all for the information here. As I see from the comments the main concerns are stability and distortion of the mesh. Hope they get that fixed, as well as the annoying interface bugs. In general this tool can be very handy.
Thread: How do you get the V4.1 muscles to work????? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Seems Daz messed some things up here. Partially they blame it on Poser, but I wonder what's the use of this new technology ExP. They say, that this solves the conflict of different morph packages using the same custom channels, but this can also be solved with a Phyton script. Posermatics NBS morph package uses this technology and works flawless. At least on my Poser 6.
Well, it is not Daz|Studio compatible...
Thread: Looks like Poser 4 support is being abandoned | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
I also abandoned P4 on my new PC. Stick to P6/P7 now (P6 offers better Carrara support) and I'm happy with it. I may start testing new meshes on my notebook, which has still a P4 installed.
Thread: Vue 6 A Ripoff Job | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
My last version was Vue 5 Esprit. Vue 4 worked great, but Vue 5 was like a beta application. Wanted to switch to Infinite, but the upgrade path was too expensive and the user comments on Vue's stability really bad. Changed to Carrara 5 Pro and I'm really happy with it.
No money left now for Vue6 Inf...
Thread: Understanding Vista: what lies ahead | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Quote - The thing is that I'm wanting to go 64-bit on the OS -- for applications like Lightwave and Vue 6I. So I'm honestly torn at this point. To be Vista 64-bit or to not be Vista 64-bit......that is the question. It's a decision that only I can make for myself.....and I'm currently leaning towards upgrading.
I run Windows XP Pro x64 on my newly aquired PC and it really works great. There is a problem with DVD-RAM packet driver and there is no 64bit driver for my Netgear printer port. The G Data realtime antivirus protection is a bit unstable, but not really a security problem.
I have a dual core with 4 Gig RAM a NVidia 7950 GT, a Wacom Graphire4. iTunes works without problems and so does Nero burning software with a SATA DVD Writer. I see no use to switch to Vista 64bit in order to use 64bit.
Photoshop, Poser, Carrara, Cinema 4D and other applications are all working stable and fast.
OK, Real Player doesn't support 64bit. I can live with that.

@kawecki:
Vista will be accepted, simply because it is bundeled with new PCs and a lot of people, who use the PC mainly for multimedia, gaming and internet will be pleased with the new user interface and not ask about internals.
Vendors will deliver at least buggy drivers for Vista, to be able to get their market share. If you have problems they will blame it on Vista (which may also be correct). We had that before.
I also agree that XP will be around for a long time. Big Companies like mine, will avoid Vista as long as possible. Vista has no feature that will raise the productivity. MS Office 2007 and Sharepoint 2007 is much more interesting and you can still use them with XP and Server 2003!
