Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 18 10:25 pm)
I'm still running Ubuntu 9.04 (have the downloaded 10.04 on my desktop but am not quite ready to make the switch)... this is awesome news. Which graphics driver are you using? I've got an NVidia 9400m G on this laptop I'm typing on... in Ubuntu.

Well done, LtD.
I might have a go this weekend... see how we go.

Poser 8 has been working (and Poser 6 and Poser 7 for that matter) with Wine for quite some time now. Personally I've used Poser with Wine for a few years now. Since Ubuntu 7.04. or 6.10. (don't recall exactly). And now with 10.04.
DAZ installers have been the cause of headaches, though. Some installers work with Wine, some don't. I've used a minimal WinXP installation with Virtualbox virtual machine to install DAZ content, but otherwise using Poser in Ubuntu is a breeze. Also the P8 service releases work fine with Wine now - with Poser 7 installing the service releases needed extra steps.
Oh and currently (Wine1.2, Ubunt10.04, Poser8 SR2) I've encountered only two problems: modal dialog windows can get "behind" the main Poser window, which effectively "locks" Poser and it must be killed. It can be countered easily though. The other prob I have encountered is that the built-in Wardrobe Wizard doesn't work - it consistently hangs at same percentage when doing converting (tested several clothing items for several different base models). Not a problem for me though since I've bought WW1 and WW2 long time ago and they both work just fine.

Bit of a show-stopper for me, though. It was doing it all the time and workflow ground to a halt. It wasn't worth fiddling around with and so I had to go back to HORRORS Windoze... to run those apps. Once they get the modal windows issues sorted, though, I'm in!

Once I figured it out it hasn't been a problem for me. I just routinely drag modal windows to such a location that the main Poser window never hides them completely. A bit clumsy, yes, but works for me since I got a 24" monitor and I don't need to run Poser main window containing it full screen. Besides the Firefox needs to be open anyway so quickly dragging the modal windows on top of Firefox to process whatever it is that needs attention, is a minor nuisance really.
I heard horror stories a few months ago & then everything went quiet with regards to running it in Linux, the last time I tried it with Wine it was a 0.9 release last year that refused to even look at Poser.
For the record I haven't had any of the windows vanish behind Poser so far. I have Poser 8 SR3 installed.
Windows 7 64Bit
Poser Pro 2010 SR1
Yeah the "vanishing modal windows" is most probably an issue related to some specific graphics display cards only.
I've posted a few times about running Poser in Linux in this very same forum. I first got it to work in Wine version 0.95-dev after some head-scratching, then it didn't work in versions between 0.95-dev and 0.98 and afterwards worked again. There was also an additional issue with Wine versions prior to 1 having a too small heap stack that resulted in Poser going unstable if the number of subfolders in the Runtime grew too big (something along the line of 4000 if I remember correctly). But that's history.
I've had the "vanishing modal windows" problem with Poser 8 SR2, but I don't have it with PoserPro 2010. I haven't installed P8 SR3 yet, but based on what Lucifer wrote, I suspect that they may have back-ported some of the changes that made PP2010 run more smoothly.
I love being able to run Poser with Wine.

I've been running Poser 8 under Wine for almost a year now:
Wine Application Database - Poser 8
Poser 7 works almost perfectly if the Wine source code is patched and built:
DAZ Studio 3 works almost perfectly if the MS Core Fonts are installed into Wine...

Please define "almost perfectly". I find having to move modal windows unsatisfactory and a show-stopper. Do you have to deal with this as well?

Almost Perfectly means that sometimes the parameters and library windows are hidden, but closing and reopening them from the menu fixes it-I've had it do that in Windows occasionally.
The source needs to be patched using my modified patch from post #13 in the bug report. I haven't tried it with Wine later than 1.1.26, because Poser 8 came out. When I compile it I don't install it, running it from the source directory it via ./wine 'c:/path to /Poser.exe'
It needs to be run using Allow Window Manager to decorate and control windows, and with Virtual desktop disabled in winecfg...

"Oh - the manual says that? I have never read the manual - this must be why."Good point, W + W... (smile ) it's one of the Linux things. Blender has suddenly stopped working on my system for no reason, so I rebuilt the kernel with the new NVidia drivers. Some update had borked it. Rebuilding fixed it. Blender works again.
One of those Linux things.

Indeed-you need to have a sense of humour to use Linux.
Obviously the folks at AT&T who originally wrote UNIX did, as they of course put the most vital system files in the 'etc' directory....
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Wisdom of bagginsbill:
"Oh - the manual says that? I have never read the manual - this must be why."That said: for the most part, it just keeps on working. This is probably the first time I've actually had software stop working for no apparent reason.
Getting ready to install 10.04... lot of prep work, backing everything up, first. Hope the upgrade is worth the pain: I haven't read much network improvement stuff in the What's News... and that's where it needs the most help. Also, GIMP is gone, as is Blender. Sheesh. Oh well, Synaptic'll fix that.

Has anyone tried PP 2010 with WIne? I wondered if the AIR library would run succerssfully. I'd be willing to give it a go if someone sends me a copy
BTW, I had opened a bug report on the P8 Library issue, but it still hasn't been assigned...
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Wisdom of bagginsbill:
"Oh - the manual says that? I have never read the manual - this must be why."install ubutu
install wine
install flash-non-free
install PP2010
change permissions of the desktop icons
launch PP2010
with a terminal navigate in the Poser folder up to the Flex folder
#firefox LSMGUI.html to open the library
some problems :
double-click on a exe open the archive manager, need to change the file properties to open with wine
refresh is slow, maybe with the accelerated driver this will be better
no icons in the library, but content load on Poser
for me it's time to go to sleep so my experiments stop here for now
In order to be able to start Poser with one click, I wrote the attached little shell script. Maybe it's useful to someone. This is the PP2010 version. For the P8 version, the paths and the name of the executable will of course have to be changed. Also in the first line you have to change the path to point to your .wine directory.

Now why didn't I think of that!
Be sure to set the permissions to executable...

"Oh - the manual says that? I have never read the manual - this must be why."Thanks, icons are working now and the script is useful
FYI DS 3.1 is working fine too
DAZ recently updated the DAZ Studio advanced and the setup tools to version 3.1.0.148, the installation was fine, before running DS you need to copy the fonts cour.ttf and times.ttf, from /usr/share/fonts/truetype/msttcorefonts/ to /home//.wine/drive_c/windows/Fonts/
screencap is from my HP Mini 5102 netbook, Poser don't run well on this machine, but DS is usable, now i can experiment with the setup tools when i am travelling

Is that HP Mini 5102 netbook using a Intel Graphics Chip? If DS runs with Wine+Linux on a system using Intel Graphics that would be amazing.
My brain is just a toy box filled with weird things
Quote - Is that a free upgrade for owners of DS 3.0? If so, I'll definitely give it a try. Having to fire up a VM each time I want to use D|S gets a bit annoying.
Visit Support -> Software -> Daz Studio you get a 3.1.0.148 public release or a 3.1.1.11 beta
For the setup tools i have found them on my account, a usual DAZ don't send any update notice, you have to visit DAZ at least once a week to avoid missing something

based on the HP site the graphic card is a Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator 3150
overall DS is a bit slow but so far i have not found a problem, my goal is to use it to learn the setup tools, i travel often in train and have plenty of free time
forget the Mini for rendering, the pic in the screencap take half-hour to render, it's just Aiko3 with some clothes and props and two lights, at home my Quad do the same scene in just 1 minute ;-)
And... it's broken again.
My Firefox decided it had to update itself, and now I can't get Flash to work anymore.
I have Ubuntu 9.10 and wine-1.1.31. The Flash Player I had installed crashed after the update, so I uninstalled it. But now the installer for the latest version, 10.1, refuses to run.
throws rotten apples at Smith Micro and Adobe

Good news of a sort, with the latest Wine 1.2rc5 I have managed to run the LSMGUI.exe file in Poser Pro 2010 & apart from the folder icons not showing up properly the library is working.
Sorry did I say it was working? I just ran it again to make sure while typing & it crashed. BUM!!!
Windows 7 64Bit
Poser Pro 2010 SR1
Well, apparently I can still run Firefox natively under Linux to show the library. Except for the folder icons and thumbnails, everything seems to work. Still hoping that the Flash issue can be resolved in some way. No, wait, I'm hoping that this thing will crash and burn on all platforms, and Smith Micro will realize like Apple did that depending on Adobe is a really bad idea.

Hmm VERY interesting all this. Did anyone try the queue manager under Wine? One of the suggestions I made to Smith Micro when they collected ideas for PoserPro and later for Pro2010 was to include a command line version of the queue manager that would run with a unix core in a runtime system. No waste of CPU capacity or memory space on GUI's, virus controls or whatever. Just boot a remote PC networked from CD and then burn it's circuits on rendering, rendering and nothing else.
Didn't hear anything back from them, but this sounds quite close.
Olaf,
I seem to recall reading that re-running the Flash installer in Wine uninstalls it, rather than installing the new version, so try reinstalling Flash.
I have my Poser installed to a subdirectory of my Documents folder, and I symlink it into the Wine C drive, so if things get too screwy I can just blow away the .wine directory and start anew without having to reinstall Poser. Likewise with the external runtimes...

I've tried to run the installer many times in various ways, and it keeps crashing on me. The only thing left to try seems to be updating Wine and starting with a fresh .wine directory.

Sounds good. I'll try that.

Poser 8 works in Linux through Wine almost perfectly AT LONG LAST!!!!!!
You have to run the library through the windows version of Firefox by opening the LSMGUI.html file after you start Poser up (Adobe AIR & the latest flash player also needed) but it works!!!!!!! :b_grin:
here's a screen grab from just now while it was rendering a quick IBL enabled test shot
