Welcome to the disolution of American society. Ever since I got into the business I'm in, I notice it more and more. Our culture is falling apart as people become more and more disconnected as well as apathetic. We're the victims of our own success. Since no one has to actually work hard to get the basics in life any longer, they don't bother and have become numb. I want to think that it's only my narrow perspective, that unless an actual study can be done to prove that it's systemic within our culture, that I'm just being negative. But it's become so pervasive in our culture, that I'm starting to believe it's true.
KFC - I totally know what you mean there! I can't count how many times I've gone to get food there, and made it home without the biscuits. We live in a small town, and I called the first time...you know what they told me? Biscuits don't come with the meal! Oh, really? Why is it that I've always gotten biscuits with every bucket of chicken I've bought there before, then? Arrrgh. I don't eat at Red Lobster anymore....the service sucks so bad, and I ended up with food poisoning the last time I ate there. Our local MickeyD's can't be bothered to put people who know how to smile on the registers. Nor can they be bothered to put things like napkins in with your order (drive thru). The number one thing that irritates me the most is how you can no longer pull into drive thru anywhere, and complete your order without being asked after each item "Anything else with that"? Uh, yeah, I'm not finished yet!!! Our internet service, though...they're pretty good. They get repairmen out ASAP when lightning strikes the tower equipment. They recently switched over to a new billing system, and our bill this month was over $200...I freaked, because I know it's been getting paid every month. That's 4 months' worth of payments behind! Called'em, gave them the check numbers of the payments they were missing, and they were immediately credited, so our bill was the normal $52. They're fast, they're courteous...I love'em. =)
Actualy, when I do go out in public, I have a very positive attitude and I'm very likable. When people do make mistakes, but owe up to it and apologize, or make things right, I am happy to leave a huge tip. Fast food joints like McD's, KFC, Taco Bell, these are places where I pay at the counter, sit down, eat, pick up after myself and leave, a tip seems out of place and nobody I know tips at these places. Sit down restaurants where you are "served", I guess I would expect more. I'm always pleasant, even when service is bad, and they will still get a tip, but I just don't come back and patronize again. The worse case scenarios are if they are defensive or blame shifters or worse worse worse of all, are visibly anger about something and complain. I've had this more and more unfortunately. d
Well, see that's what gets my goat the most. I've been in the service industry, and I know how miserable it is to work in it. But I was always as good with my customers as I could be, and because I know how miserable these jobs are, and how much I appreciated it when someone said something as simple as please (since you never heard it), I'm always as polite and affable with people as I can be. However, I've still noticed that service at places has gotten worse and that people just don't care any more. I also find myself being one of the few people that's actually polite to people in the service industry. I smile, I say please and thank you, I don't get angry or raise my voice, because most of the time it's not their fault. I've also noticed how incompetent people have become. When I walk into a Best Buy or a Circuit City, I don't even bother to ask questions any more. I never get a good answer or any kind of competent service. Now I'm on the East Coast, so maybe it's regional. But Davo seems to be up in the North West, so maybe it's not. Who knows, but maybe part of the problem is that people don't even have the basic manners to not treat someone helping them with the respect they deserve...
Walgreen's!!!! I swear they take rudeness lessons before they start there. Every time I pick up my prescription (same amount, same medication)the price is different. Often, the amount is wrong. And, when they make a mistake, you have to go to the end of the line, and wait another 25 minutes. One day there was a child vomiting all over the floor. Then the child began to choke. The pharmacy techs looked directly at this and did nothing. Finally, the mother of the child had to BORROW a cell phone to call an ambulance. Another client went in search of someone to clean the puke up. She was given a roll of brown paper towels. Child went by ambulance to hospital, stuggling for air, bluish. Puke remained on floor. Not one employee made a move to assist, call for help, or CLEAN UP. I was there another 30 minutes, waiting for them to refill my prescription with the CORRECT amount. You got it...the puke stayed all over the area by the chairs.
davo , sounds like you need to move out of Washington..lol just kidding I agree with you though, I'll probably get flamed for this but it seems the young folks (not all young folks) seem to feel the world owes them something these days. I employed many people over the years and I gotta tell you,if I had a choice between 2 American guys or 1 Latin guy for the same price, I'd choose the 1 Latin guy hands down. I've been in the flooring installation industry for over 25 years. I go to a Lowe's or Home Depot flooring department to find some adhesive. All 3 people working that department not only didn't know where to find it, but didn't know what it was. I finally found it on my own. This is only one of MANY times it was obvious that the staff there didn't know a hammer from a screwdriver. The guy probably was just moved from Lawn and Garden...lol So I go there to apply for a job in the flooring department.(after 25 years in the industry) Both palaces told me I was "Over Qualified" to manage the department. I'll say I have the best service here in Atlanta at Target & Publix & CVS. Kroger can stuff it, the cashiers are slow & rude, and the stores a usual pig sty and some can barely speak English, in addition I've seen 60-70 year old men trying to push MANY carts from the parking lot, this is very disturbing considering I see many younger more able bodies standing around thumb twiddling(the older folks were struggling) >:(. McD's here are a nightmare, at least the one near me, they can't speak any English other than numbers or you have to point at what you want. After expressing severe irritation, I usually can summon an English speaking person out from the back ~sigh~ Taco Bells are filthy, with lazy people milling about in the food prep area. The best rest. service is at ALL the Mexican rest(not fast food). They are so friendly/efficient & make the marguerita's outstanding.
Longhorns is the worst in service, usually the waiters/waitresses are always bitching about being short staffed/bad days etc ARGHHHHHHHHHHHHH...Do these imbusiles not now the reason I'm eating out is to RELAX!!!!!! Applebee's here has excellant service as well.
Note: This tends to vary from location to location. I WILL drive to the better.

I haven't eaten at KFC in almost 20 yrs...I placed a "to go"..drove home only to find out it was wrong...drove back..The manager then asked me to WAIT 20 Minutes, because they were out of chicken...C'mon...that's all ya sell.. Likewise, I try to avoid Circut City and Best Buy, for the reasons stated above..However, I have to admit it's kinda fun to ask questions I know they won't be able to answer..or just prove them wrong when the spew some crap at me.. I tend to stick to Mom and Pop type establishments when eating out..In my experience, the food and the service is much better..(besides, I ave a place by me where I can get a cup of coffee for 10 cents !!) Wanna have some fun? Let's say your bill some place comes to $18.53, give the clerk $23.53..Ok, you and I know we'll get a five back...but watch the confusion on the clerks face.. :-)

Okay, Applebees I like, the new one in Covington is always crammed. Of course it's also the only sit-down family restaurant in town that isn't fast food or Teriyaki. I also agree about the Mexican Restaurants. I never complain about the Mexican works because, well, they actually work. And AM/PM, folks, let me tell you, you know why I eat their food for breakfast? Because it's there and on time and never "out of". Home Depot.... arghhh!!!
I recall another annoying experience. Back when Steak n Ale was around. Went in ordered steak & baked potatoe, they came back out with steak & rice, we were WTF, they said they were out of potatoes. We then proceded to get up & leave. I can see why their location are less numerous now ~eye roll~. Ditto Home Depot annoyance...there is no staff(not that I 'd count on them in the 1st place LOL) & the store is very confusing & junky.
for me at the places I frequent. tim hortons counter at gas station: I do not have to say anything other than how many 95% of the time, the phillipino staff remember my order. zodiac smoke shop I walk in and the clerks all pull my smokes down, I hand them the money and walk out, not a word required. Nagiz Deli. ( a true mom and pop operation ) mom and dad own it, daughters are waitresses. this family lived in most of europe and the middle east, they cook for any culture, as done in the original countrie, not "westernised" versions. and boy do they know how to portion. huge amounts of food for small money. ( yup, sit down service in a deli also ) it doesn't matter where I go, I get great service. ( might be cause people don't want to irritate me.. since so many seem terrified of me. ) :)
I've seen this from both sides.
Try a job where you've got to deal with the public these days..........it's not surprising that many erstwhile waitresses (etc.) would rather get a job herding yak in Tibet.......just as far away from the general public as they can get.
Fortunately, I sit at a desk and interact with a computer about 95% of the time.
It's enough "interacting with the public" to post the occasional forum message. ;)
I will say that Lowe's is a little bit better that Home Depot though. I went to Home Depot to buy a air nailer for trim and molding (bout 150 bux). It's one of those items that you have to grab a ticket and take it up to the cashier and they get it out of the cage. My nine year old daughter was with me and wanted to carry it out of the store (she's such a big girl...lol) so I let her. We get home and I have her put it in the shed while I off-loaded some lumber. (I never laid my hands on the gun case) A week later it's time for me to use the gun I open the case and there is NO GUN in the box. (I would have noticed the light weight but my Selena didn't know the difference). I run (Don't walk) to Home depot to get my gun. It turns out the cashier gave me the "Demo/Display" case (empty). I lucked out because they had "ONE" gun left . Tom

I worked in customer service for 14 years, from bottom of the ladder to middle management.
I've had at least two employees who were rude to customers consistantly (they didn't last long, let me tell you). I am a very upbeat, friendly person, and I've got the smile lines to prove it, LOL.
Still, there are customers you just can't make have a good time making their purchases. I've been yelled at, cussed at, even got hit in the mouth by one lady (who turned out to have a compulsive disorder and was off her medication). My asst. manager saved the day with that one...I was beginning a swing to pop the woman back when my AM grabbed my arm, lol.
So, I always try to say thank you, please, and basically return any courtesy I'm shown when I shop. Sometimes, the person working returns it, sometimes they are rude and don't seem to appreciate my courtesy towards them.
I just always keep in mind that they might be having a bad day, and it's just not easy to leave personal problems at home when you clock in.
That's probably kept me from complaining a LOT about rudeness and bad service at places. =)

Lol, I'm on the other side of the counter and let me tell you what I have to deal with...
2 feet from a garbage can people will drop their fast food bags and a case of beer. Apparently it's my job to clean up after them.
They let their kids touch absolutely everything in the store, putting things where they don't belong, pushing their fingers through packaging and they don't bother to stop them. Apparently it's my job to put it all back.
If their children pee on the floor next to the toilet and then rip the toilet papper off the roll and onto the floor, it's my job to clean up after them.
After stirring 10 creams into their coffee they leave the creamer packages and stir sticks on the counter, right above the garbage can.
(apparently that's my job as well)
As they are buying their gum/soda/cigarettes they open the package and leave the wrapper on the counter for me to throw away rather than drop it in the garbage on their way out.
They walk into the store and without looking around for the half a second it would take them, will demand to know where a half dozen things are.
OR, they walk in and ask for a few coffee cups, a handful of napkins, plastic forks for ("how many" they ask person with them), one of my large trash bags, straws and, oh yes, some matches..... AND THEY WANT IT ALL FREE!!!
They get pissed when I don't let them dump 3 large 33 gallon bags of garbage in a dumpster I have to pay to have picked up.
If I catch their eyes when they walk in I'll say "hello". Many can't be bothered to return it.
I've had people mad that I don't carry items that even your average grocery stores don't carry.
Yesterday a woman was mad because we didn't sell bottled water by the case. (it's a small store hon, I don't have the space to store enough to sell it by the case)
They will hold open a glass (see through in other words) cooler door while deciding on which flavor Soby they want without a thought to my electric bills.
On a septic system, they can't be bothered to understand that there are times when it's just not working and so they yell about it as if I saw them coming and sabatoged it myself for spite.
If I run out of newspapers they bitch at me about it as if I'm hiding them from them.
If their credit card or ATM is declined they get mad a me. (and then ask if they can write a check - I don't think so)
People send their kids in to make purchases alone when they lack the basic skills required to do so. I can't tell you how many times kids have bought something, paid for it and then decided they didn't want it, or wanted something else. Once a kid gave me a $5 bill to buy something, I gave him his change, a few minutes later he changed his mind and didn't understand why I didn't give him his whole $5 bill back. After 5 minutes of explaining I sent him to his parents to deal with.
Obviously I could go on but basically, people suck and whomever coined the term "the customer is always right" is an idiot because the customer is usually a pain in the ass. :)
So while there are plenty of people who shouldn't be in the service industry, there are plenty who likely just had to deal with a few idiots too many that day. :)

TouchKendra There are a lot of ass wipes out there and I've dealt with them too. Lady calls and asks if I sell Designer Solarian II 05128 I say yes. She comes in and wants the sample. all of my samples of that item are out at the moment but I can show you the pattern in a catalog. "I CALLED AHEAD AND ASKED IF YOU HAD IT AND YOU SAID YES...I DRIVE ALL THE WAY HERE AND YOU DON'T HAVE IT" Yes ...we do sell it,but the samples are out,I'm sorry ,I didn't realize you wanted a sample or I would have told you on the phone that we didn't have that sample.I don't recall you saying that you would be coming in to get the sample. "MORE EXTREME YELLING AND ACCUSATIONS" Finally she asked me how much it would be to install said item in her kitchen. I replied $75.00 per square yard. She gasped in disgust at such a high price and left the store Problem solved. Sure I lost a sale, but who wants to do business with this lady for a small kitchen? Service Jobs are tough. Anyone in that sector has my sympathy. Just imagine. You're the waiter/waitress in a restaurant filled with people who want personal service. I'd tell you all to sit and spin inside of my first hour. ;-) But I do agree that the young kids think the world revolves around them. Incompetency with professionals is quite a different thing. And it's quite common. I can't tell you how many owners (my freakin' bosses no less) I've had to coach on simple basic rules of business operation. I've had the same garbage pick-up company for over ten years. I pay for the whole year at once to get a free month of service. Well the company was bought out this year and the new owners sent me a bill for one months service being 60 days past due. They said if I didn't pay the $16.00 they would cancel my service. I said" wait a minute.....I paid you over $200.00 for a years service and you're threatening to cancel my service over $16.00"!? She says. Yeah So I slam the phone down and proceed to figure out where they screwwed up on my billing. Yeah. I'm the customer, I've paid my bill ahead of time, I got threatened to lose service over their mistake, and I had to figure it out for them. I found the mistake. Called the home office. And straightened them out. Incompetence is everywhere. I watch my credit card and bank accounts like a hawk. Because you never know when these rocket scientists are going to strike next. -ScottA

I've met people who are mentally handicapped that are more on the ball than some people that are "normal"
me currently working as desk clerk / security at residential hotel.
Kendrah's days of stupidity are an easy day compared to the idiocy I have to deal with.
( getting yelled at and threatened, because with no government issued id, no entry... drug addicts trying to get in to see thier dealer, when they can't even remember thier dealers name...[ they don't have id either, but we never get to that point ] )

Kendra Your absolutely right, there are terrible customers, but you said you look people in the eye and say HELLO, which makes you one of the 'good' customer service folks who'd get a good tip (if you were a waitress :-)

On top of you constantly. suspicious and rude. They may have had a bad experience with the salesperson, perhaps,but you can bet they will take it out on you for hours. Also...it seems the more "well-to-do" they are,the worse it gets. You could spend all day in a blue collar workers home and be fed, and get a $50.00 tip on your way out the door.The same mount of time and work in a nice home on the lake and you will not even get a glass of water. There is a saying in the trades. "The longer the driveway,...The smaller the tip" As far as this being an OT subject. I think it's quite refreshing to see an OT thread live this long here. It gives those who may normally dis-agree on some subjects a chance to agree on another. Tom

I can speak on the restaurant because I used to own and operate one.
The biggest problem was customers who accepted bad service, wrong orders without complaint. They do not complain, but they sometimes do not come back.
If you ordered shrimp, but crab was delivered, you tell the waiter " this is NOT what I ordered - take it away" then if your meal does not appear correctly ask for the manager or owner.
Some of these service problems are ultimately because people accept it.
I have nothing against the idea of been able to discuss off topic subjects here. In fact I believe there should be a forum for that purpose but it has been clearly stated, before on many occasions, that such subject matter is not allowed. So why is this thread allowed? Consistency would be appreciated.
well... maybe they consider this topic to fall under the "improvments" umbrella markschum, I used to comment, nicely mind you, that the order was incorrect, after so many lame excuses and flat out rudeness from waiters/waitress, I guess I became jaded along the way and just don't say anything. On one occassion, I asked the waiter to get the manager, both of them seemed intent on getting me to accept the wrong order instead of getting me the right item.

By using personal judgement. Based on the rules. They are being consistant. I'm sure eventually we'll be encouraged to move along. -ScottA

I suspect that the point at which OT becomes OT is when the topic in question generates copious amounts of heat -- I.E. - when members begin to attack each other.
So basically -- subject matter involving politics, religious faith, sexual issues, or strongly conflicting opinions of any sort won't be allowed to continue for long. I think that this is a good rule of thumb when one is operating in the Renderosity forums.
However, certain non-controversial OT threads have been quashed in the past, too........

Frankly, it's not an issue that matters much to me. I know that some people can get foaming at the mouth with rage over post/thread deletions or locking. But to me -- it's almost as important as the cable TV signal cutting out during a storm.
Irritating -- but minor.
If I ever get irritated enough, then I'll just stop posting.
Sort of like changing my cable TV provider.
In any case, I've got better things to do with my time than to endlessly fight for hours & hours online with the same dozen or so people.......people that'll never agree with me: nor I with them.
In a situation like that: even when you win, you lose.
As the bumper sticker says: I'd Rather be Mountain Biking. I've found that mountain biking lowers your heart rate and blood pressure. And it causes you to lose weight.
Spending the same amount of time arguing in the forums never does any of these things. No matter how often one tries it.
I'm glad you made this post Davo because sometimes it can seem like we are the only ones feeling this way when in fact it's becoming a common shared experience. 'Welcome to the disolution of American society.' As drastic as that sounds it's probably true. Too many mental degenerates in every walk of life and not enough going on to kill them off :)
Funny to read this thread in some ways today. We went out to Wendy's this morning and as usual, whether we go in or at the drive thru, they always forget part of the order. Now I understand that they are busy. After all, this morning there was no one in the line but us. :) Is it really rocket science to get an order right just once? They are nice about their mistakes, but still, sucks having to go back up to the counter or to the drive thru when you notice the missing item.
Another thing that bothers me is when you call a customer service line to get help and if your problem is not one that is on their sheet, they refuse to help you. I had this with Dish Network. I don't have a TV in my office, I ran the satellite directly into the computer. It wasn't working. I call up Dish Network and I say, "Hey, my box isn't working." "Is it hooked to a TV?" "No, it's hooked to my video card which I use the monitor for a TV." "Sir, hook it to a TV." "I don't have TV to lug into here to try it. Is there something else I can look at?" "Sir, you need a TV." "The cable box hooks into my video card. I don't need a TV." "Well we cannot help you if you don't have a TV." Thank god for the internet, because that is where you can find the solutions to your problems, not from customer service. Only once have I ever actually called a customer service number and gotten an answer that fixed the problem.

I once told a telemarketeer who was wanting me to switch long distance companies that I didn't have a phone, and they said, oh, I'm sorry, I guess we can't help you then. On the other hand, I've always been able to connect to a real person at the I.R.S. in less than 4 minutes, 3 times in a row, on different days of the week. They are a kinder, gentler, more customer friendly institution now, really. I'm not kidding.
Yeah..there seems to always be the one that just cant let a topic go and can not stay out of the thread. Who's only contribution to an OT topic is by going off topic himself and complaining about the subject being "Off Topic". And folks wonder why an OT forum can not work here. Tom

lol@Scott I was hooking up Bell South DSL for a client just yesterday and she lost her username and password. I called Bell South to get the user name and password. Connection was horrible, and could not understand the accent on the other end. I asked the tech where she was and she said "The Philippines". I had to ask every question multiple times,and had to ask her to repeat herself multiple times. I know a change of subject to outsourcing would get out of hand here,but this illustrates to me that Bell South (and tons of other companies) don't care about customer service.they would rather save money by outsourcing the support elsewhere and let 'US", the customers,suffer with poor service. on a more positive note i caught a roofing nail in one of my front tires yesterday. took it to" merchants tire and auto center" in virginia this morning to plug the hole would cost $23 USD the "guaranteed used tire" dealership will replace the whole tire for $25USD for a used tire I decide I am stuck spending the money anyway and stick with " merchants tire and auto center" they plug hole I pullout my visa card the owner asks me if ive ever used them before I say NO he waves off my visa card and tells me to forget about it and" have a nice safe day" :-)
Yeah....he's not talking about a football club, I suppose.

No, this is not about renderosity, this is about just about everywhere else I go these days. Red Lobster, Federal Way Washington: 40 minutes between time drinks and appetizers were ordered until we got them, then our food order was taken. Appetizer was a fondue thing with dipping bread, came with 2 small pieces of bread to dip, oven is broken and more bread will come, meanwhile the 4 of us can stare at the fondue pot and 2 pieces of bread wondering who will have to wait for the rest of the bread. Dinner comes, instead of shrimp pasta, we get crab pasta, still tastes good I suppose, but it's not what we ordered. When waiter was told about mistake, he asked "what is it about the crab pasta we don't like"? Also asked for double butter and dipping sauce as we ordered dinner, never came. Total dining time, about 2.5 hours. Sheris Restaurant, Bonney Lake Washington: Ask for bread roll as soon as we sit down because my wife needs something on her stomache, tell waitress we need it right away before anything else. Dinner is served, undercooked, the roll never came, got charged for roll. Asked for leftover box, asked for new leftover box because the one we got was full of crumbs. Kentucky Fried Chicken, Covington, Washington: Girl taking order has no personality, no smile, no suggestions, her mind is somewhere else EVERY SINGLE TIME I GO THERE. One trip, no butter. Another trip, no salt or pepper. Another trip, no biscuits, NO BISCUITS!!?? By the time I got done eating, there were biscuits sitting in the food warmer. Why do I go there? Because I love Kentucky Fried Chicken Original Recipe and you can't get it anywhere else. Little Ceasars Pizza, Kent Washington: No longer in business, gee, I wonder why, after all, the pizzas were never fully cooked. Burned on the outside, chewy in the middle. Red Robin, Federal Way Washington and Kent Washington: why do you wear those earphone things? Does it help you communicate with the kitchen better? Well it sure as shit didn't help you communicate with me, the customer. You got us the wrong appetizer, there were only 2 meals ordered, when you served me and my wife asked where the other meal is, you completely denied that we ordered two meals, the people at the next table overheard us ordering and confirmed it. To make up for missing her meal, you put a rush on it, it came back raw. A raw Hamburger? Ever hear of Jack In The Box and Ecoli? Did you wash your hands? Probably, but I still wonder, and it grosses me out. Private Phone installation service: We ordered 80 phones. We got 79 phones. What? You lost one of the phones? Yes, I know it's a 300 dollar phone? You've never lost a phone during installation before? You don't say. What? You have to pay for that lost phone out of pocket? What? Can we pay for half the cost of the phone you lost? Am I hearing you correctly? What? You want us to renew a service contract with you after a year at 100 dollars a phone? I don't think so, click... It amazed me, somebody lost our phone and wants us to pay for it. I can go on, it's not just restaurants, it's grocery stores, everywhere, there is such a total lack of courtesy and common sense. I suppose that some people can argue that they only make minimum wage and have to share tips bla bla bla.. but does that preclude a person from being a decent human being and doing your best?
