Whelp, I think I just had my hopes too high and had some stuff set beyond where it should've been. I took an older pz3 and worked with that one instead, and render times are happy and I was able to do what I wanted to do.

So this was an attempt at using Poser as if the lights and camera were the real deal. I used only good, ole'fashioned spotlights and tweaked around the camera a bit, and turned on DOF. It turns out, if you read the manual a bit, Poser CAN work like photography. It only took about an hour to render this out, I don't feel too badly about an hour of time.

I'm sorry, I know what it is, I was just illustrating the "n00b" on being exposed to it for the first time.
That looks pretty good from a render point of view, but from a lighting point of view, you'd obviously want to throw some light on her face.
Even a camera needs a flash outdoors sometimes.
The "Golden Hour" applies in 3d, it would seem.

. SM should pay Snarly and BB to incorporate their freebies such as Envirosphere, SceneFixer and Ezskin.
This is where I start to get off the train. Why should one need an Envirosphere? What is an Envirosphere? What does it do? It's a clunky Band-Aid as opposed to software just functioning in an intuitive reality, if you get my meaning. These things are great for Poser, but ultimately not for moving into the 21st century.

Yes, I think I'm imagining a new program altogether. I know Poser is going to remain poser...it's fully committed at this point. Never going to change much.
Same with Daz3d. It is what it is.
I resort to lament.

I can't believe that in 2015 we're still talking about long render times. As many as 8 cpus on one board at tremendous speeds with fountains of memory...
My first problem is that we have to decide what aspects of realism we want. It should just be "Real" as a default then dial down from there for stylistic purposes, should someone not want "real." If I want to attempt real, I have to have a doctorate in shaders, render settings, plugins, python scripts...I understand some people prefer the esotericism, it gives them something to do, but for me...I just want to be creative and move forward.
Don't even get me started on the state of affairs with hair. This continues to be a major WTF? problem again, all the way in the year 2015. Just think back, those of you who were around, to 1999, 16 years ago, and ask that person using Poser 4 where they'd imagined the state of Poser to be in 2015. Now ask yourself...are we anywhere near that?
Probably piracy is to blame. No money; no development other than scraps. No rethinking the software from the ground up.
It would take a big chunk of money up front to get something truly new and revolutionary. Crowd-source?
Also, what about technology? What about an expansion board with nothing but gpus/cpus/memory on it that 3d programs could interface with for faster rendering, be it real time or click and wait? Maybe a desktop box that connects through USB3 (or greater) (or something) for a compact render farm on the cheap(er)?
Obviously, I have no idea, but damn, I'm willing to have a dialogue, I'm willing to hear real ideas, and I believe I'm about the perfect end-user to say "Yes, this is how it should work" to "No, that is needlessly complicated, how about if..."
Can nothing be done? 2015! It's been 16 years since Poser 4.

Okay, so, it seems like if you change fstop and/or focus distance poser becomes totally hosed. Nothing I do will restore the camera to normal, and I'm producing extremely lagged renders that look like someone is trying to beam up midway through.
This must be some sort of bug or massive user error on my part.

I appreciate all the questions but honestly if I have to answer them I'm going to blow. Suffice it to say I have six cores and a motherboard to rock it, and I don't remember how much ram exactly but it's a lot and it's fast. Pro 2014 64 bit SR 3.026 or something. Arg.

Two words: Great. Hair.
The best hair hasn't been made yet. Make it, make money.
I think that's it.

I'd welcome and embrace a huge plugin that works and operates like Clo3d but with Hair. Clo3d/Marvelous Designer is proof positive that what we all want is obtainable if only someone would program it. I don't know how, but someone must. Is it still financially viable to make a piece of software to fill a niche market like us?
I wonder.

Fantasizing now, hopefully an aggressive programmer will pick up on this and run with it...I offer it up gratis.
There should be a stand-alone or plugin that takes your poser character and responds to simple commands.
Grow hair. The model grows hair until you tell it to stop. It is straight and parted down the middle. When it collides, it drapes smoothly in real-time physic sim.
Move part left, right. The part of the hair moves until you tell it to stop or there's a slider.
Curl with X clump: The hair curls with X being defined as the thickness of the strand the curl gathers. Advanced settings define the weight of the curl and how it reacts to the hair above it. While the hair is curling it cross-references for collision in real time. Sliders for size of curls and variation.
Pull Back at ears, reverse gravity, wind...all sims
It should work with polygons, not splines and should texture itself universally with a pallete of colored textures.
Export to Poser. If you need morphs, simply restyle and export as morph target.

Too over-the-top for my tastes. The reason none of the exiting long, curly hair models work is:
A. Gravity not taken into account, the pull of the long curl on the top of the head is going to straighten things out at the root to the ear.
B. Flax. Not enough polys creates flaxen straw bends that look like twigs instead of natural waves, spirals and curls
C. Collision. In trying to keep it from being a rats-nest, modelers tend to poof it out too much at the sides in order to keep the polygons from intersecting.
What's really needed is a way to dynamically layer one group on top of the other in a simulation, such as what Marvelous designer does for clothes so that ultimately the hair model itself can be fairly "together" when exported from such a simulation
D. Modelers tend to go too short or too long...there is a sweet spot that just keeps getting totally missed that morphs just can't fix.
SAV has come close a few times and I often do use them for lack of better...but (and yes I am an armchair critic) from the cheap seats, it's bloody 2014 the tools and talent should be available to make this happen. In fact, I'm fairly sure this is what it would take to reignite my love for Poser.

Thread: Changes to Renderosity - is it just me | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Lord! Who asked for changes? RO keeps changing everything almost constantly. WTF for? Who is complaining?
You had a fine site, a great one even, where the hell was the problem?
I'm sorry, this is so stupid it makes my head hurt. What a waste of time and effort and resources.
You are paying someone for this travesty? You could just be pocketing profit. Dumb dumb dumb.
