Poser - OFFICIAL F.A.Q (Last Updated: 2024 Nov 28 11:20 am)
~skylab : )
A little heads up.. when installing Flash, make sure you install the one for IE as well as for your Default Browser if you also use another Browser...
This might be the reason some see it in Firefox and not in IE or Poser 8...
Any that have contacted Support, and this works for, please let us know.

Hey LL, wanted to post this for when you come on, in case you're interested. Someone over in the XL thread said there was a program at CP by Dimension3D called XA - eXtended Access for Poser 8, at this link: http://www.contentparadise.com/productDetails.aspx?id=11191
There's a PDF and ReadMe near the bottom, under Details.
~skylab : )
Okay, I wanted to post this from Tech Support for others that are following this thread as lurkers. I have followed all of this except the bit about Administrator and Folder Permissions because I'm not sure how to do that on XP. I am afraid that if I log off I might not be able to log back on. I do not remember if I had to put in a password when I first started this laptop or not. As for the problem at hand I've even done a few things not mentioned in here by going into Norton and giving Poser 8 and Flash permissions.
To skylab, thanks! I'll check that link. I have purchased XL python and I can use it to load stuff into Poser if this issue is not resolved.
Okay, from Tech Support:
The following has resolved this issue when encountered with over 90% of those reporting the issue.
First off, make sure your Operating System and your IE Browser are up to date, using Windows Updater. Set your Browser to Medium or Medium High Default Security Setting.
Then go to the Adobe Flash Web Site and use the Flash Uninstall and then use the Flash Install download files.
Uninstall
http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/141/tn_14157.html
Install
http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/otherversions/
Launch Poser after rebooting and see if the issue remains.
If that does not resolve the issue, check your Firewall/Security Programs to make sure you are not blocking Poser.exe or 127.0.0.1
The other issue encountered is one of Permissions for Folder Access. Installation should be as Administrator for all aspects (Poser and Flash) when using Vista and all Users should have access to the programs and the Runtimes. (This can be an issue even if you are the only user on some systems. Vista you should not run the program as the Admin, but from your user account that may have Admin Rights.) Remember to Reboot your system after you make any changes to your Firewall, Security Software or User Accounts access.
To verify that all items were installed correctly, check the following Folder
... windows/system32/drivers/etc
for the Hosts File. In Hosts, using Notepad, look for the following entry
127.0.0.1 ::1 localhost
change it to
127.0.0.1 localhost
(removing the ::1 ) <[do not leave the space]. Save and reboot. Launch Poser.
Also, verify that the LSMGUI/bin-release folder is listed as a trusted Flash application folder.
The contents should be a variant of this:
…Poser 8RuntimeuiFlexLSMGUIbin-release
It should match the main runtime installation location.
In that folder is LSMGUI.html and LSMGUI.swf, the two pieces that make up the Library GUI. Launch Poser and double click the LSMGUI.html file and launch it in your browser. LSMGUI.html will display the Library as a standalone (but Poser must be running). Viewing this in your Browser may reveal the problem. If you also have Firefox, try using that to check the File when Poser is running.

Added.. . Make sure you download the IE version Flash for your Operating System if you also use another Browser
I will add that though there are only a handful of people still reporting this after the above steps, there is active investigation into the possible causes, since we have more encountering it.
I also want to thank those that are sticking with us in trying to determine the cause.
NOTE: MAC users that have partial Library, that is also being investigated, but is not likely the same issue. Oddly, it is about the same number of MAC users experiencing it.

Perhaps this may be helpful, if only to reassure some folks that this does appear resolvable.
I can confirm some of what has been reported and advised above. A friend purchased P8 over the weekend and also encountered the absent library panel. My own experience with Poser is limited so I was not able be of much help other than assisting in locating a solution.
After two days of hair pulling and cursing what worked for him was an uninstal of Flash Player, a reinstall of both Flash for IE and Flash for other than IE. This allowed the libary panel to appear, but not fully function. A change to the settings in Zone Alarm, allowing Server access, freed the library panel to function fully. It was not necessary to allow Internet Access in ZA.
The only issue now is that CPU usage skyrockets whenever the Librabry panel is open. This is being reported elsewhere and seems to be more of a Flash than Poser issue; although they've now been married for "better or worse."
His system is Win XP with Firefox as primary browser. He seems happy with P8 on all other accounts so far.
If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving definitely isn't for you.
Glad it worked for you. Hope it was successful for LL. I tried all of the steps above, still not working. The only thing that I could add that might help others is, for years I've kept automatic updates fully on WinXP, but upon visiting the update site and choosing Custom rather than the recommended default Express, there were several necessary updates that had not been applied. All of that is resolved now. The NVIDIA driver update caused my monitor to go blank upon reboot, so had to reboot in safe mode, restore to previous, and start over, eliminating the video update. I went through all the steps of uninstalling Flash, and reinstalling version 10 in both IE8 and Firefox. I picked through and found the other files, folders and walked through all the steps. Not much else I can do.
LL , again, hope it works for you....you've surely been working hard on this. By the way, I googled for info about lost Windows password recovery....and there are ways to do it....but, I didn't want to see you go through what I did with the video driver, so didn't post any links. Apparently it is possible to get it, but it involves creating a boot disc, and you'd run the risk of it maybe working, or maybe not. You'd need to do a full backup of your files before trying something like that. It doesn't seem one could get a P8 fix to work without rebooting...it's required in several of the steps above....but hope somehow that you can.
~skylab : )
Sorry, yesterday was not a good day for me to be online. I set up a render and went and did other things. Have to do a grocery run today.
I have tried all these steps except the logging off and then logging on as Admin. I've even made sure that Poser and Flash has permission in Norton. The Library palette will show up under Firefox which is my primary browser. (Believe me, if I could uninstall and delete IE, I would!). I've only gotten the browser to appear under IE a couple of times, but it doesn't stick. I even made IE my default browser for a little bit and got the Library to appear under IE, except after reboot it was a no go. And yes, I've noticed that when the Library palette is showing under Firefox, the CPU usage skyrockets and kills available memory for big renders pretty quickly. There is a beta update for my video driver, but I've decided not to give that a go because I don't want my laptop to become scrambled eggs. The only thing that I've thought about doing is reinstalling the core program with Norton disabled. But I'm not really hopeful on that. I have the XL library python script and that works to a degree for me.
I'm sure they thought this Flex thing would be great but for a few of us out here with odd configuratons, it's not a good idea. I still think they should have given us the option of installing the Classic Interface or the new Interface for Poser. But that's just me because the new isn't working for me. I think it was a mistake to marry Poser to anything having to do with IE. Maybe some serial update might resolve my issue without having to try to log off my computer. Logging off worries me because I can't recall if I had to create a password or not. I don't think that I did, but I'm not 100% sure.
I let P8 do a render yesterday while I was away from the computer. GI seems to really not like transmapped hair, and I'm going to have to switch from VSS with AO to the one without because the GI calculation pass took 3 hours. Oh, what came out the other end looked fab, but took six hours.

Stefan said we should not use material-AO with GI. First of all, it increases render time exponentially. Second, GI does what AO does better. Third, when you use both, you're doubling the occlusion effect, losing realism.
Another thing - using VSS shader-based GC with GI is mathematically unsound.

Scroll down till you see pictures of V4.
I am still learning and studying P8 GI. I had an important discovery yesterday and another today. Since I'm still learning, I'm not posting tutorials yet, but I will be. If I had posted a tut on VSS and P8 yesterday, I would have told you wrong things.
Please be patient - you do not want the blind leading the blind, right? I can see a little bit now - getting there.
Renderosity forum reply notifications are wonky. If I read a follow-up in a thread, but I don't myself reply, then notifications no longer happen AT ALL on that thread. So if I seem to be ignoring a question, that's why. (Updated September 23, 2019)
Hi LL....sounds like you've gotten to know your laptop real well, as I have my Gateway desktop this week. Thankfully I have a backup laptop for emergencies, but I don't tinker with it for that reason. And yes, caution is a good idea with video driver updates. Make sure you know which key to press in order to go into safe mode should you ever have a mess on your hands....I had to run to the Gateway website by way of laptop to find that seldom used information. I'm not one to give up on things easily so I was determined to at least give it a fair try, but it's getting to the point where it can wear you out...and like you mentioned, there are real like things like grocery runs and errands, and work.
When this is all behind us and we've had a little rest, would love to learn something about what you do with lighting....or point me in the right direction to learn. I get frustrated....have fairly good ideas for composing pictures, but the lighting is always either poor to down right bad because I don't know how to use all the advanced features.....the things that make glass look like glass, and well-placed dim lights. I know it's all a matter of dials in the right place, so I'm not afraid to try it. Sometimes I hit a snag with terms that are used....because they are not yet familiar.
Glad to see you online again....I was starting to get a little concerned, if maybe you had your system fail to restart or something. And you're right, we have XL to fall back on, and perhaps the companion program that just came out may be helpful as well. Better to have something working, than the whole thing to go "scrambled eggs". This stuff could give you a twitch after awhile...hahaha.....

To Skylab, I have spent the better part of last year learning IBL lights. Of course, with GI now, looks like IBL isn't a necessary component anymore. But I still have a nice collection of lights. If you'd like to Beta test. I can package up a couple of them in a little while and email them to you.

Sorry you are also having problems. Decided I would back off from it this evening and just play a few online games and relax. Sometimes I can get a fresh perspective after some rest.
If all else fails, some have had success using XL Library from CP, go here if interested:

...and a similar XA product was released this week, go here for info and PDF download:

Since I'm not a content creator, just a hobbyist, this works fine for me, at least for now. Hang in there . . .

Quote - I have a ? for Sky. Did you purchase the upgrade version and after you installed did it alow you to put in your P7 serial?
Dirtylooks... There is no difference in the software, or the way it is installed, between the 'upgrade' and the full product. It is only different pricing, depending on whether or not you own a qualifying version of Poser.
"If I were a shadow, I know I wouldn't like to be half of

Dirtylooks....I usually come on here kind of late so just getting your message. The initial install screen did appear as if it was going to ask for my Pro number, but once I entered the P8 number, it seemed to be satisfied and went on with the installation....perhaps since Pro was on my system. The other five or six times I've uninstalled and then re-installed, it just picks up where it left off, as if my serial is already in the registry or somewhere. That gives me the feeling that it's holding on to information from the very first install, and won't give it up....and perhaps no matter how much I change the security settings, reboot, reconfigure, and stand on my head only on Tuesdays while it's raining (haha), there may be something from the initial install that is ignoring the new configuration and permissions.....anyway, it's just the conclusion I've drawn because I can't think of anything else it could be.
~skylab : )
Well, there you go...you've even done that, so that answered that question. Perhaps I've been choosing the wrong day to stand on my head? haha....
So far XL Library has been working fine for loading content....as you can see from image on previous page, Ryan loaded fully clothed with no problem, and I was able to access lights through XL as well. Before I got XL, I was loading up scenes in other versions of Poser, saving as a scene, and then going into Poser 8 and re-opening. It works, but you don't have the benefit of some of the new P8 content. Might buy you a little time while waiting for more news.

Hi I seem to be having the same problem. I have followed the instructions multiple times, and I am still having the problem in Poser 8 and in IE. when I load the file LSMGUI.html in firefox (with poser running) it shows the library in the firefox window. however the item is still the blank screen in poser 8 and IE. This makes me think that the problem is with a setting for IE. Now I went over a large number of them but I am unable to figure out what to change. Anyone else have some ideas?

Not that it bothers me personally.. but does this mean you'll have to be connected to the Internet while installing Poser 8? Does it indeed phone home? I've told everybody that this wasn't the case, but your answer makes me wonder anyway.
Again, it's no issue to me, I have no problems with programs verifying themselves to the "mothership" - but I know a lot of people feel differently about that :)

No, you do not need to use that to Register either.. (it is a Check Box)... One of my Test Beds is isolated from the Network and I can install and activate Poser 8. I do update this machine to make it as if it is fully updated. After reading some posts, I am thinking about setting up another system to be like one that was never connected to the Web. I could do that with an XP system,.. Have one of those getting ready to come to me.

as im reading this thread i got curious about one sentence :

:end quote
Does this mean you havent rebooted your computer in a very long time?

Thanks for the reply, I had already contacted the support guys at Smith Micro and they did reply to my support ticket with the same info posted in this thread. I sent them a reply back and am waiting for them to give me some new stuff to work with.
I did however discover a workaround all though I can not for the life of me get the library open in poser 8 or IE, I can get the file LSMGUI.html to open perfectly in firefox. So What I do is start up Poser. Open LSMGUI.html in firefox and then use the firefox window as my library. It is not a perfect system and I will continue to try to fix the problem I am having but at least I can use the program.
I am seeing quite a few responses that are similar to my own situation. The Library palette will appear under Firefox but it won't appear under IE at all. I've tried just about everything. I even reinstalled the core program with Norton disabled. No change. The library works under Firefox but not under IE and of course won't display within Poser itself. I do not know if it is IE blocking the Flex system or something else. As per the post above, I can use the Library if I have Firefox running or I can use the XL library python script. So far I'm just using the XL Library and getting on with learning GI.

In almost every case I'm aware of, this is because somebody downloaded Flash for Firefox. You have to download and install Flash for IE, even if you never plan to use IE. It may seem strange and unbelievable, but displaying HTML (and things you can embed in HTML such as Flash) within an application requires a "browser" component. The only one readily available as a drop-in component for application developers to use in Windows applications is IE.
So even if you never plan to use IE as your Internet browser, there are things involving Internet technologies, such as HTML and Flash, that need to use IE as a component, not unlike using the built-in Windows color picker. (Which is also accessible within Poser.) IE is a Windows component, just like the Windows Indexing Service is a Windows component necessary to make the Poser Search feature work.
More and more, the technology to enable complex behavior is modular, and these modules are useful both for Internet applications and local applications. IE is just one of these modules.

Poser 8 sucks!!!! I just decided to buy it and first time install here today and I get the blank library screen in Poser. You would think Smith Micro would test their software before selling it. I should not have to make umteen changes to my pc to get a program to work. I'm returning this piece of garbage tomorrow.
Well by all means do return it and spare us for the whine fest.
Sorry I'm getting really SICK of peole screaming "THIS HAS NOT BEEN TESTED" - of course it has. Please people. Get a grip.
I'm not saying your problems aren't legitimate. In some cases they certainly are (while in other it's caused by some weird system configuration, or more likely Norton f'ing up things) but claiming that the sorfware left the company untested is ludicrous. AND insulting to both the testers and the developers.

Using Poser since 2002. Currently at Version 11.1 - Win 10.
this is what happens when you use third party software as an integral part of another app.
my only bugbear with DS3A and all versions prior is that it relies on MS's C++ Runtime to work.
it works for the majority, but those it does not work for have to put up with faffing around with their entire library of user alterable settings, sometimes to no avail.
i fear these problems will become far commoner as software houses try to cut costs by purchasing 'over the counter' code to do a job, instead of employing programmers to write and develop the code that would work best with their new apps.
BB seems to have done a great job of his part of the new version, but think how much he could have done if he had access to the core code of Poser. he would have been able to see exactly how his coding interacted with the core code of the app.
So any software house should re-invent the wheel?
That would CERTAINLY cut down the costs
It is apparently hard for people to get the ida of components.
If something is already an integrated part of for instance Windows, WHY in the world should any company waste time and money in maiking their own version.
It's like demanding that Poser should invent its own scripting language rather than use Python.

Wait a minute, you mean Poser uses the finder, and directory code to find files that came with my OS? Plus Poser also uses print drivers that came with my printer and the video board drivers that came with my video card? Are you telling me they didn't write all new special code that does all that inside Poser for every video card and printer ever made? That Poser makes calls to my OS for launching, quitting, opening and saving files, memory management, and copy and paste functions? Why those lazy SOB's!
Gary
"Those who lose themselves in a passion lose less than those who lose their passion"
Ok mea culpa. I'm sorry I said Poser 8 has not been tested. But still to have to go into my pc and mess with a zillion settings and all.
I have not had any problems with other software packages I have installed on my pc. Everything installed and worked no problem the first time and I have been working with pc's etc for like 10 years now. It helps to have windows update on to auto install upgrades to windows drivers etc.
But this. Blah.
Why use IE as a needed part to get the library in Poser 8 to display right. (If it does not need IE ok remove foot from mouth) In Europe there was something about having windows sold without IE installed so people could choose the browser they wanted. Would Poser 8 run on those machines or would they be forced to install something they will never use. I for one use Firefox all the time. I do not want to mess with IE at all.
I'm not trying to be a bitch. But it's very fustrating not to have something work right out of the box when you have shelled out a large sum of money for it. More so given the state of the economy right now when I have to watch where every penny goes. I can't afford to spend a lot of time for that reason and others messing around with obscure settings in my pc to get Poser 8 to work right or any other software package for that matter.
building by components is great, but all components and their tolerances MUST be built from the same masterplan of the proposed product to integrate into the whole as a finished product.
you would not fit a Honda Civic head to a Ford Taurus engine and expect it to run properly if at all, would you?
the same principle applies to software.
a library, in effect, is a database. not an internet browser .
correct me if i'm wrong, but Python has been practically a full part of Poser from early days, so would be easy to update by people who have full access to the code of Poser itself.
integrating code from an application that is totally different must have been a nightmare for anyone who did it, especially when they had no access to the core code of the product they were trying to get it to work with.
besides, Python is a scripting language, not an application( program)
btw did i have a go at anyone or any particular company? no.
i just made a general comment, not aimed at any program or person or company.
so there really was no reason to come back with a snide and totally uncalled for tone.
I'll repost this from correspondence with SM tech support.
127.0.0.1 ::1 localhost
change it to
127.0.0.1 localhost
Quote - Now, let me add that I went through all of this that I posted several times. I also uninstalled and reinstalled Flash about 4 times. I went into Norton and made sure that Poser had permission to run. I did a whole lot of things and still my window was blank. BB came on one night and gave me some URLs to click (I'm not sure where the thread is), anyway, they came back with an error screen under IE and I showed him screenshots. He then looked up what the error message was talking about and told me to try under IE turning off the auto dectect LAN settings. I unchecked this box and low and behold, Poser 8's Library palette suddenly started working. I am going to post a screen shot of what I'm talking about. Try unchecking the box for auto detect LAN settings.

Hi LL ... here we are again....haha. Okay, I'm going to post some information here that might help the other 10% of the folks who are having problems. Please note, I have not tried this. However, it was posted on the DAZ forum by someone who did, and it fixed the problem. So...having said that, here goes. I'll put this in quotes below:
"...I use Windows XP SP3, still, and had the blank library tab. The solution for me was to go to the Microsoft site and download and install Microsoft Visual C++ 2008. After the reboot, my library tab was the fine.
One minor annoyance, though. Although my D|S 3 still worked fine afterwards, when I installed the next D|S 3 update - which forcibly reinstalls Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 - after my next system boot, the Poser 8 library had gone blank again. Running the 'repair' option from the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 uninstaller and rebooting then got the Poser 8 library working again (and the D|S 3 still worked). So it appears that a D|S install - most likely the forced Visual C++ 2005 install within that even when you don't need it - is messing with the Visual C++ 2008 install, which in turn is bringing the Poser 8 library problem again.
So, anyway, for XP users, downloading and installing the Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 is worth a try as it fixed the Poser 8 blank library problem for me. But if it does, be aware that if you are also a D|S user and do a D|S install, you may then need to reinstall/repair the Visual C++ 2008 and reboot afterwards.... " (end of quote)
Now, I happen to be a DAZ Studio 3 Advanced user, so this could quite possibly be an issue on my computer. However, I use DS3 for some of my animations, and for the first time in a long time, everything is working, plug-ins, the whole bit, so I can't risk messing it all up. But, if this information can help anyone, there it is. Good luck everyone!
Good hearing from you LL, hang in there!
