Subject: (OT) I'm ready to kill my neighbours!!!!!

Acadia ( ) posted Wed, 12 July 2006 at 2:29 AM · edited Fri, 29 November 2024 at 2:56 AM

I've had a total of three and one half hours of sleep in the last 24 hours thanks to my freaking inconsiderate neighbours!

I live in an apartment and have lived in my apartment for 10 years.  When I moved in everyone on this side of the building on my floor had lived in this building 5 years or more.  Long story short, about 3 years ago they started to apply for rent increases above the set amount (and were granted them), and as a result people have moved out, and new people have moved in, and out, and in and out.

The current batch that live right next door to me, across the hall from me, and across the hall to the right of me are real winners.

The ones next to me have had band practice complete with electric guitar, keyboards and drums, fights with the full effect of doors slamming and screaming lasting 5 hours or more, and yesterday they decided to skip out on their lease and move out at 3am in the freaking morning!  I got a whole 2 hours of sleep before all that noise woke me up.

Yesterday I decided to try and nap because I was so tired I was almost falling down.  I was awakened after one and one half hours by the caretaker vacuuming the hallway, and a bunch of hammering. It seems that the agency wasted no time in getting the repair people into that apartment so that they can rent it out.

Now tonight I can't sleep because the butt dots across the hall are having a freaking party!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's a good thing that I'm not a violent person and realize that killing someone is really, really bad :) otherwise I'd go over there and slap some people around with a broom.

I'm so tired (sleepy) and pissed off that I could just spit, only I don't know how :(

So, someone tell me a fairy tale, or sing me a song to cheer my mood :)

I do not have any songs, or such but I do have some potential advice.  I live near some people that insist that playing very loud music with the bass turned up so much it shakes the walls is the thing to do.  I found that if I turn on my ancient fan it generates enough white noise that eventually I can sleep in spite of it all.  Perhaps that might work for you?  A fan, the radio, a television set to no station, something.

Also, I do not know how things work in Canada, but do you have a noise ordinance there?  If it is so dreadful it is causing lost sleep, perhaps a call to the police might be what you need to do?

Good luck and I hope rest finds you soon.

Acadia ( ) posted Wed, 12 July 2006 at 3:03 AM

I've thought of calling the police, but they are so busy with real crimes that I feel guilty about calling them about a noise complaint.  Besides what would probably happen is that they would show up hours after the party stopped.

I wrote a letter to the agency and faxed it over. They will send out a warning letter to them.  The last time I complained about them they got a warning letter and they were "tolerable" for about 1 month.  Unless someone else has also written to make complaints about them, this will be their second warning, and three strikes and your out.

Don't feel bad anout calling in the law. A lot of police work is just sitting around or crusing the streets. Here in Australia we have set hours where everyone has to keep it down, or the cops will issue noise abaitment orders = court = fine. These's nothing worse than trying to sleep and being kept awake by inconciderate neighbours, don't take it, call the cops next time, it's your right.

Instead of complaining, you should have called the police, especially in situations of domestic violence.  It's specifically their job to handle these cases.  Let them decide whether its important enough to answer or not.

If that sort of thing happens, then call the police. They might not be able to do much at first, but if the problems carry on and they get more complaints about those people then they should start to take things seriously.

I don't know which country your from, but in Britain if problems like that persist, then you can try to get an ASBO (anti-social behaviour order) against them. Meaning that if they do anything like that again, then they can be removed from the area.

I can sypathise with you. My dad's house is jioned onto won that was bought by someone to rent out. Lots of people came and went, most of whom did a runner after smashing the place up. There was this one couple with two young kids, the kids were alright, I felt sorry for them. The parents were always getting drunk, fightining, screaming and smashing things in the middle of the night. The neighbour on the other side of them tried to compliain by going to see them and was threatened by the bloke with one of those "decorative" samauri swords that you can get in places like Glasgow. The neighbour called the police, but they couldn't find and had no proof.  After being carted away several times by the police for drunken and disorderly behaviour. The landlord gave them notice. They decided to do a runner with some of the furniture in the middle of the night, and smashed the rest of the place up. When then landlord took down some damaged fixed wall units, he found the sword had been hidden down behind them. I think after that, he was a bit more carefull who he rented the place to.

Buy a sherman tank :)

We have drunk people living above us. They used to get  up when everyone else went to bed. The hallways slept of *** where their friends would sleep and do nasty things.

We tried complaining to our housing manager and we got told as they had 'substance misuse issues'. We should be more tolerant of their lifestyle. Cops and local noise officer didn't want to know.

After one of my neighbours crashed his van because he couldn't sleep. So all the residents got together  an every time they made the slightest noise someone would bang on their door and have a go at them. The stairwells got hosed down every day despite anyone sleeping there. Now they are as quiet as church mice.

BTW - In the UK. Don't ever try tackling teenage anti-social behaviour on your own. You don't get sympathy from the cops, just arrested photographed and fingerprinted.

i have had the same problems in the past.

1st ask them not to do things that piss everyone off.

if that dont work try plan two

if you can get to your neighbours power supply turn it of and pull all the fuses, replacing them with blown one is best.

dog shit on the door knobs

bad milk in the letter box

get some big ugly mates the bigger and uglyer the better to have a word with them

or wait till its nice and peaceful then knock on the door and do your best crazy screamin woman act you can.

sorry i cannot help

I couple years ago, I had a neighbour with a dog (one of those dogs who's lonely and loves his own voice kinda dogs) now I love dogs, but I dont agree with even getting one if youre not gonna at least spend SOME time with it.... anyways this dog barked non stop from about 6:00pm till 6:00am.... twas great I loved every minute of it...especially when it started going hoarse at about 11'sh.... the guy just merrily slept right through it.... so after many nights spent twiddling my thumbs and counting the cracks in the ceiling above my bed... I decided it was payback time.... sooooo.... I looked up his address in the telephone directory, got his number. added it to my spped dial, and called him approximately every 15 minutes through the course of the evening, and did my best impersonation of his hoarse dog to him when he answered.... I gotta be honest and say, after hearing it for so long, i kinda had it down pat... needless to say, I think the dog got shipped off to some friends of his farm....

Should try giving it a go... worked for me.

"fights with the full effect of doors slamming and screaming lasting 5 hours or more,"

I had a recent rent increase, as well, and the same sort of thing happened to my building.  Sunday, my next doors fought from 7 in the morning until 4 pm when i finally blew up.  This is a constant with them, at least 3 days a week.  Fortunately, I'm mostly not home when it happens.

I'm installing an alarm on the wall that I share with them, this weekend.  Next time they crash into my walls they will get a nasty surprise.....and, i think i'll just leave it going, and leave the house.

If that doesn't work.  I WILL call the police.  I just want these people either quiet, or, more preferably, GONE.  Domestic violence is a crime, and, hopefully, the cops will drag at least one of them away.

I live is South Florida.  There is no way I can go through the aftermath of a hurricane with these people.  They need to be gone before we get one this year.

I'm so sorry to hear of your troubles Acadia been there done that and thankfully no longer.
However, just give me the address of the building, whether in Canada or not, and I'll have some "fellow colleagues" slip in...er...come over and take of the problem. They have a nifty way of making people "disappear" quite nicely with little trace left behind.

Too bad you can't fight fire with fire, so to speak.
Several years ago my husband and I lived in a duplex.  We lived there several years and had mostly good neighbors.  Except this one time when a couple of guys moved in.   It wasn't bad at first, but then they started playing this really strange music. Always after eleven pm, and really, really loud.  We didn't care on the weekends, but during the week was a different story.
Talking to them, and  calling the police always worked for about two days before it started up again.  Even when Wichita's finest started giving them tickets for disregarding the local ordinances.
Now, my hubby and I are old school head bangers.  So, after four or five months, we decided to fight back.  Whenever the music would start and wake us up, we would stumble out to the living room and put our own music on and crank up the stereo.  We found that Ozzy, Black Sabbath and Pantera worked the best.  Only took them a week to get the message permantely.  They still played their music, but turned it down after 10.

nickedshield ( ) posted Wed, 12 July 2006 at 9:40 AM

If you want to be extremly nasty get a frequency generator. Plug it into a hi power amp and start dialing frequencies. There are some that will make people sick, give them headaches, affect the stomach and bowels. I have done this. One frequency that will cut through any noise and cannot be filtered is 3500Hz.

I must remember to remember what it was I had to remember.

I had a friend of a friend that had a similar problem with some downstairs neighbors that would NOT turn down their music. He tried a lot of different types of music to blast them out but most didn't work. Finally, he bought a caliope CD (carnival/circus music) and put it on repeat, lowered the speakers to the floor and pointed them down, turned up the stereo and hit play. Then he left. They got the point and if they ever started up again he could just play the first few notes fairly loud and they would run to the stereo. Bagpipes also work I am told.

Great isn't it!

First, I agree with everyone who recommends calling the police (disturbance of the peace).  Failing that, you could do the loud music thing - just be aware that the police may show up at your door instead.

When I first moved to Denver, I lived in an apartment complex on the first floor.  The floor above was populated by a 'group' of people who would be rather inconsiderate.  Parties or noise all hours - sometimes all night into the morning.  Complaints were made to the office and one night the whole gang dropped everything out a window (including themselves) and that was the last we saw or heard of them.  I can only imagine that they had either breached their contract or had not paid the rent and were being evicted.  Good riddance...

I play guitar - electric/classical.  Classical is, of course, not that bad.  And I always restricted my practice to normal hours (10am-11pm) either way.  When in a band, we rented space to practice.  For solo practicing on electric guitar, there are these great things called 'headphones'. :)  Won't work with drums, but there are silencers that can be applied to the drum heads to quiet practice.

Now that I live on a 3.5 acre plot of land, I can basically crank the amp (2 Celestion 12") up to about 4 or 5 without being noticed - but still within normal hours.

Good luck and I suggest that it's time to seek new residence if the circus continues.

Have had similar problems in the past. Just remember "monetarium recompense et canus fem", which is bad latin for "payback's a bitch". Bagpipe music rocks, but for real soul clearing, get a copy of Pink Floyd's "carefull with that axe, Eugene", pu the speakers to the wall, start the disc (or 8track if that is your wont) and crank it up to 11. don't depend on the cops unless you don't want them to come to your place when there is a real emergency. if you have a video camera and cable TV, wshen the noise starts, start the camera, recording the sound and disturbance, keep it running as you go to the TV, turn on the TV and set it for the local info channel, which should have the current time on it, videotape the time off the screen so that you have an accurate record of the time of the disturbance, give a copy to your landlord as proof that these things happen. if there's a chance that you will be confronted by violence, have someone videotape the conversations for you from a discrete distance. another thing is to go to a grocery store (Safeways, Superstore), get a frozen freshwatter fish, (pike is good), unwrap the frozen article and tuck it up under the bumper of their vehicle. it will thaw and start to smell. but it will smell for the whole car. you try and pick up women when your car smells like a glue factory. or, you can go through your lease and pick out areas where the landlord is supposed to keep you in a safe and comfortable environment. If you have to follow rules, so do other tenants. go to the city, they usually have a landlord tenant advisory board. granted, this doesn't solve the immediate problem. if all else fails, go to the univerzsity and get a law student who needs to do a project to pass. also remember "anybody who says living well is the best revenge, has never had a really good revenge". Well, at least as a renter you have an option to move...

I have/had the same prob, only I bought a house that is the crux between the good neighborhood and the bad...

The family across the street moved away and rented out their house... the rent management they hired let a pack of hyenas move in... they partied day/night, stuff got stolen.... a real pain.

Eventually the owners came back to find their house half destroyed. Needless to say, the renters were evicted as the house got fixed up to be sold again... this time it was to a family who wanted to live in the house (not rent it, thank God)

So be thankful that you didnt buy the apartment, lol...

yeah, it all depends on what level you are at with the police in your area...
Forunately i used to work as a security guard long ago and I knew how far I could go...

I managed to keep the mini-park next to my house clear of pot-smoking juviniles for the last year and a half,  by punching out one of the dealers smoking drugs with his buddies and blowing smoke at my kids... (I dont mind if you smoke pot, just not in front of 2-5yr old kids in a park, smoke it in your own back yard... blowing the smoke at my 2yr old was the last straw)

but that helps if youre a big mean looking dude... (I dont advise violent approach unless you know a few "loopholes" to allow you to exert brute force)

Some people now-a-days just dont give a damn, and it seems that we "good" folk who want a desent community end up with the short end of the stick.... (sometimes having a shortend of a stick is not that bad, as the long end is the part of the stick that does the hurtin! hehe)

Good for you!!! And you're right sometimes the law abiding citizen gets the short stick. You either knew this dealer or  you must have been dealing with some dumbass punk . Had it been a more organized, street wise, experienced dealer the possiblity of you ending up with a cap or a shiv in you or a member of your family would have been pretty high. That is the only problem with dealing with scum. They don't always play fair and some of them don't even care if your're a law enforcement officer. Just be careful out there!!!

This is something you should never ever do - it's very bad....

There's a joke shop product called "Fake F@rt" and it smells terrible - beyond anything the human body could produce without the aid of nuclear contamination...and it clings...

Under no circumstances should you spray it through their keyhole or on any washing they may leave out to dry or into their letterbox etc etc and god forbid they leave their car window down a crack...

This is in no way the most satisfying revenge you can take on a neighborhood idiot without the risk of getting punched out...

When I said "fighting for 5 hours", I didn't mean "domestic violence" type fights. I mean the yelling and screaming (mostly the woman), and slamming of doors (again mostly the woman).  Essentially hissy fits, not physical fights.  Trust me, if it were violence I'd be the first one on the phone because I have been in an abusive relationship before.  I'd be the last person to stand around and do nothing if I saw or heard it happening.

Quote - I can sypathise with you. My dad's house is jioned onto won that was bought by someone to rent out. Lots of people came and went, most of whom did a runner after smashing the place up.

The ones who moved out in the middle of the night must have done some damage to their apartment too judging by the amount of noise coming from there yesterday when the repairmen were there.  Also, when they moved out they used the hallway walls as an ashtray and butted their cigarettes out on them. I guess I should be happy that they didn't just drop them on the carpet and set fire to the building.  They also left a going away present for the caretakers to clean up;  they marred one of the hallway walls up with black marker.

Quote - There was this one couple with two young kids, the kids were alright, I felt sorry for them. The neighbour called the police, but they couldn't find and had no proof.

I'd never risk my life by going to someone's apartment about noise. There are a whole lot of unstable people out there.  The following story shows how unstable some people can be.

About 3 or 4 years ago there was a situation in my city where a guy who lived in a very prestigious area of the city was having the same experience with his neighbours as I am having with mine.  He (I'll call him Joe)  went next door and knocked on the guys door at midnight on a weekday to ask if he could turn the music down as Joe  had to work in the morning.  The guy in the apartment attacked Joe with a Machete. The guy was swinging the machete at Joe's head and Joe put his hands up to protect his head and ended up having one of his hands totally cut off, and the other was only hanging by a piece of skin.   Joe had a bunch of deep cuts to his neck and head. The guy was trying to decapitate him.   Joe was in the hospital for months.  His hands were reattached as one of his neighbours had the sense to grab the hand and pack it in ice.   I looked after him and saw his wounds :(

The first person to move into the apartment immediately adjacent to me was a guy in his 30's.  I had lived in my apartment for 6 years at that point and neither I nor the woman who had lived there prior had any problems with one another.

As soon as that guy moved in he was banging on the common wall to tell me that my TV was too loud.  I usually have my TV volume between 3 and 5 notches on the volume bar.  After 11pm I turn it to 3 notches. The lowest notch that still allows me to hear clearly. That first night I was on my way to bed so I just turned the TV off.  Night after night he as banging on the wall. Finally I just ignored him.  I asked the caretaker to come to my apartment and listen for herself.  Her and her husband deemed it to be quiet  and told me that the guy had no business harassing me as he was.   I complained to the agency about his banging on the walls and told them what the caretaker said about my TV and they sent him a warning.

During the day and evening  he would have his stereo up to about volume 10 and wouldn't turn it down, even if I banged on the wall like he did to me.  In fact he would even turn up the noise level when I did that. It became a battle and I was miserable and sleep deprived because I worked nights and slept in the day and he would go out of his way to be a nuisance.

One day he came to my apartment at 1am and asked me to turn my TV down. I told him it wasn't loud and that any lower I couldn't even hear it, and the caretaker had listened to the volume and agreed with me. He said he was going to report me and I told him to go right ahead.  At this point I tried to close the door, but he had positioned his body between the door and the frame and put his foot there too in order to prevent me from closing the door.  I felt threatened by that action and got scared. I did the first thing I thought of and that was to stomp really  hard on his foot and push my body aginst the door to close it.  I did call the police about that and I wrote a letter to the agency telling them what he had done and how it made me feel.   He moved out not long after that.

I live in a highrise in a nice area of the city and the rent is not cheap. I currently pay $610.00 for a one bedroom apartment and that will be going up to $650.00 in October. The problem is that they are raising the rent so high that it's to a point where many individuals consider it too much money to pay for an apartment and what is happening is that they are renting to "kids" who share rent, and as  a result it's becoming a freaking dorm.

I will swear that the people across the hall deal drugs.  There are people coming and going all day and all night long.  There are days and days when they are burning incense to the point I have to stick a towel at the bottom of my door because it stinks and sets off my asthma.  And there are days where you can smell pot.  I think the next time I smell it I'm going to call the police and tell them that they are dealing drugs.  The cops are  more likely to respond to a call about drugs than one of noise, LOL  And it's not very easy to conceal the smell of Sweet Mary Jane... even incense doesn't hide it :)

Quote - Maybe the party was to celebrate the band leaving

LOL, but somehow I doubt it.  They were friends of the ones who moved out. I was hoping actually that they were all moving out together, but my genie must have been asleep when I made that wish,  lol

The agency is good about responding to complaints. I will give them credit for that.  But I think part of the problem is that the people coming into sign the lease aren't the same people moving into the apartments.  IE: Parents signing the lease on behalf of their kids and friends.

And given that story I told above there is no way I'd ever go to someone's door by myself and tell them to keep it down.  I'm too chicken to do that.

Quote - or wait till its nice and peaceful then knock on the door and do your best crazy screamin woman act you can.

haha, I was close to that point last night.  They finally quieted down at 4am.  However, there is no "peaceful' time in their apartment. It's grand central station day and night.

I used to live in a house with a neighbour like that.  The poor dog was outside 24/7 regardless of the weather, and it gets mighty cold here in the winter time.   I used to take it food on my way to the bus stop and felt so bad for the poor thing.  Finally I couldn't stand it anymore and I went and "dog napped" the poor thing and took it to the Humane Society and reported the abuse.  Unfortunatly after the HS investigated and the guy cut a hole in his garage to give the dog some shelter the dog was returned to him :(

That was the first and only thing I've ever stolen,  hehe

Quote - he bought a caliope CD (carnival/circus music) and put it on repeat, lowered the speakers to the floor and pointed them down, turned up the stereo and hit play. Then he left. They got the point and if they ever started up again he could just play the first few notes fairly loud and they would run to the stereo.

LMAO. OMG!  That's hysterical.  wipes tears from eyes  LOL

Good luck and I suggest that it's time to seek new residence if the circus continues.

"If you want to be extremly nasty get a frequency generator. Plug it into a hi power amp and start dialing frequencies. There are some that will make people sick, give them headaches, affect the stomach and bowels.
I have done this. One frequency that will cut through any noise and cannot be filtered is 3500Hz."

Sounds like you are someone who would know this - Is there really a "brown noise", you know, a frequency that makes one sh** one's pants? Just curious.

bigjobbie ( ) posted Fri, 14 July 2006 at 6:01 AM

That's "The Brown Note" - The Mythbusters series tried to find it (standing in the middle of a ring of gigantic speakers wearing nappies/diapers) but felt after all fair efforts that it was just a myth.

Obviously the Dark Side of the US Military Complex may disagree with their findings!

The Headache/Nausea sonics are real though and most western police forces are considering adding such weapons to their "non lethal" armouries...like the often abused pepper sprays that are rarely used as an alternative to shooting an armed criminal and mostly used against unarmed protestors or people mouthing off...

If they used some Kylie now against Bin Laden would that be against the geneva convention ? :)

or here's something I got off of a friend. take a ziplock bag, insert a small amount urine into it, lay it flat in the freezer, freeze it. when frozen, take it out of the ziplock (wear gloves) and slide it under their door when they're not at home. it will melt, leaving a small pool on their floor.

They've been pretty quiet since I faxed that last letter.

It's actually been very nice and I'm actually liking where I live again!  Let's hope it keeps up :)

Since my last post, they've been noisy as all heck.  The guy seems to have picked up guitar lessons or something, which isn't so bad, but he bellows really badly while playing. Between that and the parties, doors slamming and yelling in the hallways...... GRRR!   I gave up faxing letters to the agency because they didn't seem to be doing anything about it :(

But.....

**They're moving out!!!!! ** I don't know if they were finally evicted, or if they are skipping out on their rent.  If you don't pay your rent by the 10th they send you a 5 day eviction notice, so my guess would be they are skipping out.

I don't care which it is, all I know is that I'm practically doing cartwheels!!!!!

I had this problem back in the day when I lived in an apartment.  Every friday and saturday night, the upstairs neighbor would have "friends" over and play music, all night..... for two nights straight.

There was no way you could sleep thorugh it, as it shook the friggin walls! LOL.  So, one friday night, since i couldnt sleep and could hear their music full well, i started writing down each song they were listening to.   Over the next week, i compiled a list of songs on a tape deck, and i electrical taped one of my speakers to the ceiling.  When their next friday night party ended, and the guests tricked out, and the music stopped (3am), I turned mine on...... and left it on, til noon the next day lol.

It stopped.

LOL, I wish my problem could have been resolved like that, but these people are directly across the hall from me, and TBH I think they were stoned so much of the time that they wouldn't care.  My floors vibrated from their music and even when I had my TV volume turned to 1/2 of what it can go to, I could still hear their music over my TV volume!!!

I'm not a violent person and abhor violence, but I've been so frustrated with them and the lack of response by the agency,  that I've actually caught myself plotting their demise (not really in seriousness)!  Just goes to show that we all have a dark side.

Well, they're going and that's all that really matters!!!  I just hope they rent to someone responsible.

Be care of what you wish for...you just might get it.

In other words...save the cart-wheels until after you find out who the new tenant is.

They could be worse.(Instant Karma can really suck...lol)

It is not my intent to be a wet blanket so please don't take it that way.

I had a similar experience with a next door neighbor, and was delighted when the news came that they were moving out. But after a week of "The Replacements", I would have paid the first months rent of the old neighbors in order to have them back.

Remember...no matter how bad things are...they can always get worse.

And just to show that I'm not a pessimist, I also believe that... "No matter how good things are, they can always get better.

It is my hope that your new neighbors are among the best you have ever had.

Brightest Blessings.

LOL, I've thought of that.  But in the meantime I'm looking forward to one night of uninterrupted sleep! I don't know what the future has to bring by way of new neighbours, but I'm going to relish it while I can :)  I'll deal with tomorrow when it comes.

"I'll deal with tomorrow when it comes."

We have similar philosophy's when it comes to that.

If I'm unsure of what the future holds in a given situation,I'll say... "I'll jump off that bridge when I come to it"....lol

And yes...Enjoy Today...Today.

Relish in the bliss of quiet evenings while you have them, and hope they continue even after the new tenants.

Hell..you may have a week or even longer. Most times the place needs to be re-painted, cleaned up, etc. so you may even have a quiet holiday season.

The beauty of Karma, is that it works both ways.

Quote - Don't feel bad anout calling in the law. A lot of police work is just sitting around or crusing the streets.

Ain't that the truth.

Number one reason the police cause trouble and go all Abner Luima on people is boredom.

I've read countless cases that, while not in the reports, essentially begin with "so a couple cops were hanging out bored when a call came in..."

Sometimes when you see 3+ patrol cars stopping one traffic violation it isn't about needing backup, its about passing by and seeing something to do other than run the cycle up and down the freeway yet one more time...

Sometimes this can lead to over-reaction...

Of course the above said, police have an amazing ability to be nowhere near a bad neighborhood when someone who lives there needs their help... Even if they might show up the next day to get one of those locals with 2 swat vans and 10 patrol cars and... literally... go rooting under the foundation of your house looking for random NPCs.

I feel your pain.  I'm a police officer in St. Louis County Missouri and we get a lot of calls regarding parties and domestic issues that need to be addressed.  Don't feel bad about calling the police.  It's one thing I hate is when people start partying in an apartment and everyone can hear you.  It's inconsiderate and annoying to those who don't want to be bothered by the noise.  I hope things are better for you in the future.

Content Advisory! This message contains profanity

I am amazed at how folks like those neighbors don't understand a simple 2-word phrase :

"OTHER PEOPLE"

Easy, isn't it ?

But then again, I guess they wouldn't if they were such incurably selfish assholes (which by the sounds of things is just what they are).

As for deliciously exotic forms of revenge, how about this (a variation on something already mentioned) : pee into a vial or a bottle (make sure you do plenty), and then pour the specimen down the windshield of their car so that it runs underneath into their car parts and air conditioning vents etc. ....

I only had one situation where I was in a band and we had the 'cops' show up - and it was in a house.  But after that we decided to rent out a storage space and practice there, albeit not very condusive to practice.  Before that, we practiced in our duplex without too much hoopla - but then the next-door neighbor was out either working or partying most of the time which made it easier and didn't seem to mind or complain.

When it comes down to bands and practicing in residential neighborhoods, the solution that seems best (and one band that I know went this route) is to acoustically insulate the practice/recording room.  Then you can play as loud as you want to your heart's content and the neighbors don't suspect a thing. :)  Apartments are another matter - a band shouldn't be practicing in an apartment.  This would require special acoustical insulation (if inbetween floors, it would require not only wall insulation but floor and/or ceiling insulation).  Bands in this situation need to find a better space.
