Just to add to what's already been said, the best way to learn is to jump in and do it. It can seem frustrating at times, but just keep at it. You can't learn everything at once, and all any art teacher can do for you is point you in a new (notice I didn't say "the right") direction. For aesthetic issues, post stuff in the galleries and ask for input. You might get a few stray nasty comments, but the community is overwhelmingly supportive. Just spell out for them what your skill level is and what you're trying to accomplish and you'll be amazed at how on-target the critiques you receive will be. If you're stumped on technical problems, search the forums, then ask your question. Someone will help you come up with a solution. This website is an incredible tool -- it's like interactive art classes with hundreds of teachers. JUST KEEP AT IT!
Thread: how can i edit CR2 file? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
If you do use a word processing program, just make sure you open and save as text only. I haven't done a huge amount of CR2 editing, but I haven't had a problem. I'm on a mac, and just drop the saved-as text file on macconverter, and that puts the Poser icon back on the file.

Thread: When are smart props smart? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
First off, when you make them, make them on the figures OBJ mesh, so that you're sure they're in the right place. (Export the relevent body part or parts to obj, check ONLY for morph targets, open it in your modeling program.) Import your obj without centering, figure height, etc. checked. Parent them to the body part they most overlap -- necklaces to the chest, for example. Try checking "inherits bends of parent." For small props that don't have multiple parts, don't conform. (I think "conform" wants the prop to have joint parameters, falloff zones, etc.) Then save into prop library and check "smart prop." I've never had any trouble.
Thread: How to turn an .obj into a prop? | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Once you have the object imported into Poser, scale it, color it, apply maps, etc. Then just add it to your prop library. (Use the + button.) Name it what you want, and that's pretty much it, I think. (If it's parented to something else, it will prompt to make it a smart prop.)

Although, the lightsabers in the original movies were modifed Graflex flash guns for cameras, circa the 1940s and '50s. (When you see reporters taking pictures in old movies, look at the flash attachments on their cameras.) There were a lot of irrate camera buffs in the '70s, because everyone was buying up vintage equipment and trashing it to make lightsabers. I'm not saying I'd want to go up against Lucasfilm in court, but the design is not original to the Star Wars movies.

Amapi is great for modeling, but version 4 is very difficult to get to obj format. Version 6 can export directly. I'm not familiar with Strata 3D -- if you are comfortable with it and it exports obj, use it. If you're up to editing CR2s, I just use word, save as text only and drop it right on macconverter. Works like a charm! Any problems you encounter are more than made up for by the platform's ease of use.
Thread: Sharp edges in poser, coplaner and bevels hoping to help | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Thanks for the explaination. I was aware of beveling, but it never occured to me to simply divide the polygons! It is very useful knowledge!
Thread: A question for Morphtarget specialists | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
If the clothing items don't have matching morph targets, I think you're stuck. You'll either have to make your own in another modeling program to match, or try using magnets to re-shape the clothing in Poser.
Thread: Poser Lighting and Render question! | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
There are lighting tutorials available, if not here, then through Curious Labs community links. The spotlights are great, but you can even get a good look with the standard lights. Selecting the light (spotlight or regular) and setting the map size to the maximum, (which I believe is 1028 x 1028) will also help. Using texture maps and transparancy maps on your figures can make a huge difference (if you're not already using them.) Also, playing with the highlight strength, size and color can help eliminate that plastic look. And finally, there are a lot of easy things you can do in Photoshop to clean up the image. Play with filters, then FADING the filters; or adjust the contrast, hue, etc. You can really punch up a dull image quickly! Good luck, and just keep trying! The great thing about computer art is that you can make multiple copies and go nuts!
Thread: Let's talk about post, baby... | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
Well, I came in on this thread late, but here's my 2 cents. I think all you people who say you can't draw might just be selling yourselves short. Drawing hair, for example, is not very difficult. Try one of the excellent tutorials here and elsewhere. Patching meshes, smoothing curves and so forth is a snap! Use ALL the tools available. I understand what you're saying, but try it sometime -- and keep trying. The great thing about computer art is that you can undo and save alternate version. I think you might surprise yourself. (And I can't draw a straight line either -- that's what rulers are for!)

Thanks! I sometimes feel like the red-headed stepchild, with all the "PC only" stuff out there. Viva la Mac!

You can also use colors for the highlight color to give more depth to the figure, i.e., yellow or orange, or gold or brown over your basic flesh tone. This gives a color sheen that makes the skin look more natural. Also, adjust the highlight size slider higher. This makes the highlights less "plastic." Experiment -- you can get some really great effects!

DAZ3d.com has a character creation pack that has the dragon wings, fairy wings, plus horns, tails, tenticles, etc. that are loose and designed to be parented to your other figures. I can't remember how much it costs, but if you're going to be doing stuff like this it may be a good investment.
Thread: A newbie question about importing models | Forum: Poser - OFFICIAL
If you have poser 4, you don't need to write a hierarchy file -- use the hierachy editor in the program. If the parts to your figure are named with the standard names, the editor will automatically organize them for you. The manual explains all this, but sometimes can be a little obtuse. (Both the grouping tools and the joint editor drew forth much colorful language from me at first, but now I'm starting to get the hang of it.) Just keep at it and don't give up. Also, try looking at some of the tutorials available on this site. They might give you further insights, or say things in a way that make it easier for you to understand.
